Almaty ski resorts 2026/27: which one, and how to get there
Three lift-served ski areas sit 25–60 km from Almaty: Shymbulak (about 45 minutes from the city, 920 m vertical), Oi-Qaragai (40 km, about 1 hour) and Ak-Bulak (60 km, about 1 h 15 min), with private transfers from $50 per car. Karakol in Kyrgyzstan is the long-haul option at 430 km and about 7.5 hours, from $300 per car. Almaty is one of the few cities on earth where you can land at an international airport and be on a 3,200 m chairlift before lunch. Which Almaty ski resort is best? The comparison table
Distances and drive times are from central Almaty by car in normal winter conditions. Pass prices are the published 2025/26 adult day rates: as of October 2026 none of the Kazakh resorts has published 2026/27 prices, and in recent seasons rates rose each winter, so treat these as a floor. Approximate dollar figures use about 500 ₸ to the dollar.

In one line: Shymbulak is the mountain, Oi-Qaragai is the resort, Ak-Bulak is the quiet alternative, and Karakol is the adventure.
Shymbulak: can you still drive up in 2026/27?
Shymbulak is the big name: the base at 2,260 m is reached by a 4.5 km gondola from the Medeu skating rink (about 15 minutes), and chairlifts continue to the Talgar Pass at roughly 3,200 m, where the steepest pitches and the best views of the city are. It is the only Almaty resort that reliably skis into April: the 2025/26 season ran 26 November to 12 April.
The catch for 2026: from 24 July to 30 November 2026 the road from Medeu up to Shymbulak is closed to private cars while utility networks are rebuilt. Your driver drops you at the Medeu gondola station and helps with ski bags. The city has discussed electric shuttles between Medeu and the resort and weekend restrictions on cars for the winter, but rules for the 2026/27 season had not been published in mid-October. We check them on the day of your trip and tell you in advance where the car will stop.
A transfer from the city to Medeu/Shymbulak is from $50 per car; straight from the airport see Almaty airport to Shymbulak, from $70 per car. Not skiing? The Medeu and Shymbulak tour covers the gondola ride and the rink.
Oi-Qaragai and Ak-Bulak: the two resorts east of the city
Both sit in the Talgar district east of Almaty, inside or beside the Ile-Alatau National Park (expect an eco-fee of about 600 ₸ per person at the gate, 2025/26 figure). Neither is affected by the Medeu road closure.
Oi-Qaragai (formerly Lesnaya Skazka)
Opened in 2007 in a fir-forest gorge above the village of Besqaynar. Runs are mostly blue, sheltered from wind, with night skiing on lit lower slopes and a large ski school teaching in English. It is the resort we recommend to families and first-timers, and the busiest in winter: more than 365,000 visitors in 2025/26. Cottages, treehouses and glamping make an overnight stay easy. Details: Oi-Qaragai transfer, from $70 per car.
Ak-Bulak
Above the town of Talgar, about 60 km from central Almaty. A Doppelmayr gondola lifts you to about 2,000 m, Leitner chairlifts continue higher, and the top of the lift system is quoted at 2,664 m, giving the longest continuous vertical of the three on paper. It is used as a training base by race clubs, the grooming is good, and on a weekday you may share a red run with a dozen people. The 63-room resort hotel has a pool. Details: Ak-Bulak transfer, from $80 per car.
What about Pioneer and Tabagan?
Older guides list both as ski areas near Almaty. Tabagan, in the Shybynsay gorge about 17 km east of the city limits, has been closed for skiing since its operator went bankrupt in 2016; the lower area reopened as a cottage-and-restaurant venue, but the lifts are not running. Pioneer is a small local slope in the same foothill belt and appears in the Almaty Superski master plan as a phase-two development site (2027 onwards). For a visitor flying in, neither is worth a day of your holiday. If a local friend recommends one for an evening of easy turns, we will drive you there, but check that it is open before you set off.
Is there heli-skiing in Kazakhstan?
Yes, but it is seasonal and small. Two areas operate:
- The Ile-Alatau above Almaty. Operators fly Mil Mi-8 helicopters, which carry a group of up to about 15, to drops up to around 4,000 m. The window is late: a UK outdoor magazine gave April to the end of June, when the high snowpack is stable, at about £500 per day including guides (2023 figure). Expect weather days.
- Ridder in East Kazakhstan. The Altai heli-tours carried more than 270 skiers in winter 2025/26, 148 of them foreigners. Ridder is a flight to Oskemen plus roughly two hours by road, not a day trip from Almaty.
Heli days start early from a helipad the operator names when you book. We drive you to the pad and wait or come back, with room for skis and avalanche packs; for a full standby day book a private driver for the day from $160. Across the border, Jyrgalan near Karakol offers cat-skiing and heli-skiing at about $800–1,500+ per day. Always book heli-skiing with an operator that provides certified guides and avalanche equipment, and check that your travel insurance covers it.
When is the ski season in Almaty?
- Opening. Shymbulak opened technically on 26 November in 2025 and officially on 6 December; Oi-Qaragai opened on 13 December and Ak-Bulak on 14 December. Expect similar dates for 2026/27, weather permitting: the 2026/27 dates had not been announced in mid-October.
- Peak and price surcharges. 16 December (Independence Day), 25 December to 11 January (New Year surcharges at Shymbulak; Oi-Qaragai's high season ran 1–11 January) and Kazakh school holidays, 28 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Weekend traffic up to Medeu and Talgar can add 30–60 minutes.
- Best snow and quietest slopes. Mid-January to early March. Sunny, cold days are typical; freeride on Shymbulak's upper slopes is usually best from late February.
- Closing. Oi-Qaragai and Ak-Bulak usually close in late March or April; Shymbulak often runs to mid-April. Karakol's 2026/27 price list runs 18 November 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Karakol: is the long drive from Almaty worth it?
Karakol, on the east end of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, has higher snow reliability, fewer people and passes at roughly 40% of Shymbulak's price. The ski base sits at 2,300–3,040 m, 7 km above the town. The fastest road from Almaty is about 430 km via the Kegen–Karkyra border crossing, roughly 7.5 hours of driving plus the border. Karkyra has historically closed or kept daylight hours in winter, so check the Kegen–Karkara crossing status before you book; if it is closed, the route goes through Kordai and Bishkek and takes longer. One car cleared for international routes takes you the whole way, no car swap, from $300 per car: see Karakol from Almaty. Kyrgyzstan detail, including the new Ala-Too resort at Jyrgalan due in December 2026, is on RideKG.
How do I get from the airport to the slopes?
Almaty airport (ALA) is on the north-east edge of the city, which helps: Oi-Qaragai is about an hour away and Ak-Bulak roughly the same, without crossing the centre. Shymbulak means crossing the city to Dostyk Avenue and climbing to Medeu, 1–1.5 hours. Your English-speaking driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight and waits 90 minutes free; ski and board bags travel free. A sedan takes two people with skis comfortably; for three or more with gear, choose the minivan, and in heavy snow a 4x4. If you land after about 22:00 and are heading to Shymbulak, consider a night in the city: the gondola does not run at night. Prices for every route are on our price page; city hotel first? See Almaty airport to the city.
