Kolsai Lakes, Kaindy and Charyn: 2 days by private car

Saty village, the gateway to Kolsai Lakes, is about 300 km and 5 hours from Almaty. Our two-day private trip covers Charyn Canyon, Kaindy and the Kolsai lakes from $560 per car (minivan for up to 6 guests), $650 for a Land Cruiser, or $900 for a Sprinter. An English-speaking driver is included, along with the driver's room and meals in Saty. Your own guesthouse and the park tickets you pay locally. Splitting the trip over two days gives you the one thing the 14-hour day tours can't: time to walk from Lower Kolsai up to the second lake.

What does the 2-day Kolsai Lakes itinerary look like?

The plan below is the one most of our guests choose, because it puts each place in its best light: Charyn in the soft morning, Kaindy in the quiet late afternoon after the day-trippers leave, and the Kolsai trail on a fresh morning with a full day of light.

Everything can be re-ordered. If you only want a lake shore and a good lunch, we can do Kaindy and Lower Kolsai on day 2 and be in Almaty for an early dinner. If you just want the highlights in one long day, see the Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy day trip.

How far is it from Lower Kolsai to the second and third lakes?

The three lakes are stacked up one gorge, each about 400–600 m higher than the one below.

SectionDistance one wayClimbTime
Saty → Lower Kolsai (car)14 km asphalt—20 min
Lower → Middle Kolsai (foot or horse)≈8 km (sources give 7–9.5 km)≈430 m3.5–4 h up, 2–3 h down
Middle → Upper Kolsai≈4 km≈600 m3–4 h up

The trail to Middle Kolsai is well trodden: forest of Tian Shan spruce, a few wooden bridges over the stream, one steep section in the last third. In trainers it is fine when dry. After rain, the roots get slippery and boots help. Horses can be hired at the lower lake from local handlers. Agree the price for the round trip, including the handler's walk, before you set off. Your driver will help with the negotiation in Kazakh or Russian. Riding is slow but saves the knees on the descent.

Upper Kolsai lies close to the Kyrgyz border, inside the border zone. You need your original passport, not a copy, and the park may require a guide or advance coordination. Done properly, it is a two-day trek with a night in a tent, which is a different trip. Tell us early and we will plan it with a licensed mountain guide (from $100/day).

How much are the Kolsai and Charyn park tickets in 2026?

Park fees are set in MRP (the monthly calculation index), which is 4,325 ₸ in 2026. As published for 2026, the same tariff applies at both Kolsai Lakes and Charyn national parks:

Kolsai has two ticket posts, one on the road to Lower Kolsai and one at the Kaindy turn-off. Keep your receipt, because rangers check it on the trails. In 2026 the Kaindy post introduced an electronic barrier with card payment, but carry some tenge for the other posts, the 100 ₸ toilets at Lower Kolsai, horses and lunch. We have not seen a separate foreigner tariff in the 2026 tables. Expect a few thousand tenge per person for both parks over two days. Tickets are not included in our price and are paid on the spot.

Do I need a 4x4 for Kolsai and Kaindy?

Not for Kolsai: the road from Almaty to Saty and on to Lower Kolsai is paved all the way. A minivan is the comfortable choice for groups of up to six with luggage.

Kaindy is the exception. The last ≈12 km from the turn just east of Saty run up a gravel gorge track with river fords. In 2026 a 9.9 km rebuild of this road was under way, due to finish in autumn 2026. Until that is confirmed open, a minivan stops at the Kaindy checkpoint and you continue in a local off-roader (paid on the spot). Book the Land Cruiser ($650) and your own car takes you up the track, where the park allows it. See our Kaindy by Land Cruiser page for details on the track.

Where do you stay in Saty, and what is included?

Saty is a farming village of a few hundred houses at the mouth of the Kolsai gorge. Most accommodation is in family guesthouses: clean, simple, often with a hearty home-cooked dinner, sometimes with a shared bathroom. There are also a handful of newer A-frame cabins and small lodges on the road towards the lakes. These sell out on July and August weekends, so book early or ask us for a shortlist.

Mobile signal is reasonable in Saty and at Lower Kolsai, and patchy to absent on the trail and in the Kaindy gorge. Download offline maps.

When is the best time to visit Kolsai Lakes?

Mid-June to early October is the trekking season. Late May and early June bring high water, mud and occasional snow on the upper trail. July and August are warm (low to mid-20s °C by day at the lower lake, much colder at night) but busy: the park has seen up to 7,000 visitors a day at peak, and nearly all of them crowd Lower Kolsai and Kaindy. Mid-September is our favourite: gold larch and aspen, quieter trails, crisp nights. Snow can arrive in late September at Middle Kolsai.

Avoid summer weekends and Kazakh public holidays if you can. On a weekday, by 08:00 you will have Lower Kolsai almost to yourself.

Can you visit Kolsai Lakes in winter?

Yes. The road to Saty and Lower Kolsai is kept open, and the frozen lake under snow-loaded spruce is very beautiful. Expect daytime temperatures of −10 to −20 °C in January, colder nights, and 0.5–1 m of snow in the forest. The trail to Middle Kolsai becomes a snowshoe or ski-touring route, suitable only with a guide. Kaindy freezes over, so the spruce trunks stand in clear ice. The gorge track is snowy, and a Land Cruiser is the only sensible car. In March and April, avalanche risk can close the Kaindy route entirely. Winter guesthouses are fewer, so confirm heating before you book. For a winter trip we send the 4x4 by default and check the road with the park the day before.

Can I continue to Kyrgyzstan instead of returning to Almaty?

From Saty, the Kegen–Karkara border is about two hours east, and Karakol is a further two and a half hours. The crossing is seasonal and its hours change, so check the latest at Kegen–Karkara border. If it is open on your dates, book the one-way Almaty to Karakol via Charyn and Kolsai instead. Longer trips combine this route with Almaty in our 5-day Almaty itinerary. Our prices page lists every route.

Questions

How much is a private 2-day Kolsai Lakes tour from Almaty?

$560 per car for both days in a minivan for up to six guests, $650 in a Toyota Land Cruiser for up to four, or $900 in a Sprinter for up to 16. The price includes fuel, an English-speaking driver and the driver's own room and meals in Saty. Your guesthouse, meals and park tickets are paid separately.

How long does it take to hike from Kolsai 1 to Kolsai 2?

3.5–4 hours up and 2–3 hours back for most fit walkers. The trail is about 8 km one way (sources give 7–9.5 km) with roughly 430 m of climbing through spruce forest. Horses can be hired at the lower lake to make it easier. Start by 08:00 to be back with time to spare for the drive.

How much does it cost to enter Kolsai Lakes National Park in 2026?

865 ₸ per person per day (0.2 MRP), plus 2,595 ₸ for a car or 8,650 ₸ for a minibus, per the 2026 tariff. Charyn charges the same. Tickets are bought at the park posts, where the Kaindy post now accepts cards. Carry some cash for the others, and keep your receipt for rangers on the trail.

Is Kolsai Lakes worth it in one day from Almaty?

10 hours of the day trip are spent driving, so you get Lower Kolsai and Kaindy but never the trail. If you want to see the second lake, walk in the forest or catch Kaindy without crowds, two days is the better trip. One day works if you simply want the classic photos.

Can I visit Kolsai Lakes in winter?

Yes, from December to March the road to Saty and Lower Kolsai stays open, and the lakes freeze under snow. Days are −10 to −20 °C. The upper trail is guided snowshoe territory, and the Kaindy track needs a 4x4. We default to a Land Cruiser in winter and check access with the park the day before.

Do I need a permit for the third Kolsai lake?

Upper Kolsai, at about 2,850 m, is in the border zone near Kyrgyzstan. Carry your original passport, and expect the park to require a guide or advance coordination. It is realistically a 2-day trek with camping, so tell us at booking and we will arrange a licensed guide.
