How long is the drive from Almaty to Oi-Qaragai?

About an hour from a central hotel, a little less early in the morning. The usual route runs east on Al-Farabi Avenue to the Eastern Bypass, then out of the city into the foothills of the Talgar district and up the Oi-Qaragai gorge past the village of Besqaynar. The road is paved all the way and cleared in winter; the final few kilometres climb through forest with some tight bends. Our drivers run winter tyres from November.

From Almaty airport it is also about an hour, because the airport is on the eastern side of the city. That makes Oi-Qaragai one of the easiest ski transfers in Central Asia: land, collect your bags, and be at the resort before your hotel check-in time. Expect slow traffic on Al-Farabi between 08:00 and 09:30 on weekdays and on Sunday afternoons coming back.

At the national park gate an eco-fee of about 600 ₸ per person applies (2025/26); parking at the resort is paid, so being dropped at the door saves time.

What is Oi-Qaragai like for skiing?

Oi-Qaragai opened in 2007 as Lesnaya Skazka, the "forest fairy tale", and was later renamed after the gorge. Runs are cut through Tian Shan fir forest between about 1,550 and 1,820 m, which keeps them out of the wind and gives good visibility on grey days. Most pistes are blue, with some red and a few short blacks. Sources give 11–14 lifts (chairlifts, drags and conveyors) and between 13 and 25+ km of runs, depending on what they count; the planned Ak-Tas area at about 2,140 m was not yet operating in 2025/26.

Children 7–14 paid about 6,500–8,500 ₸; there was a reusable card of 3,000 ₸. Over New Year (1–11 January 2026) prices were up to 5,000 ₸ higher. 2026/27 prices had not been published as of mid-October 2026. Rental starts at around 10,000 ₸ a day.

Can I ski the evening session and get back to Almaty?

Yes, and this is where a private car earns its money. App taxis are plentiful going up in the morning and scarce at 23:00 when the lights go off. Book the return for 23:15 and your driver will be in the car park. In the cold, after a night session, the forest road can be icy; the driver knows it. For a full day plus night, it can work out better to keep the car with a private driver for the day, from $160.

Where to stay and eat at Oi-Qaragai

The resort has its own cottages, chalets, treehouses and glamping tents among the pines, plus VIP chalets for larger groups, so many families stay two or three nights rather than commute. There is a large mountain pub, a fusion restaurant named after the 1,820 m top, Georgian and Kazakh restaurants, and a yurt spa called UMAI. Mobile signal is good across the resort. If you stay in Almaty instead, a central hotel and a daily transfer works well; for your arrival see Almaty airport to the city.
