Ak-Bulak ski resort: private transfer from Almaty

Ak-Bulak is about 60 km and 1 h 15 min from central Almaty, and a private transfer costs from $80 per car one way, with an English-speaking driver and your skis inside. The resort sits in the mountains above the town of Talgar, east of the city, so it is also roughly an hour from Almaty airport without crossing the centre. It is the quiet alternative to Shymbulak: a gondola, long groomed reds and, on a weekday, very few people.

How long is the drive from Almaty to Ak-Bulak?

Plan on 1 h 15 min from a central hotel and about an hour from the airport. The route leaves the city east along the Kuldzha highway to Talgar, about 25 km of flat multi-lane road with fuel stations and a supermarket in Talgar itself, the last real shop before the resort. From Talgar a mountain road climbs south through orchards and then forest to the resort base. The road is paved and cleared, but the last stretch is steep with hairpins and can be icy in the morning; our drivers run winter tyres from November.

Traffic is the real variable. Leaving the city between 07:30 and 09:30 on weekdays, or on Saturday mornings, can add 20–30 minutes. Coming back, Sunday afternoons into eastern Almaty are the slowest of the week. We usually suggest leaving at 08:00 for first lifts and heading down at 16:00 before the queue forms.

Do I need a 4x4 to reach Ak-Bulak?

Usually not. A sedan or minivan on winter tyres handles the road on most days. Choose the 4x4 (Land Cruiser Prado class, from $130) when fresh snow is forecast overnight, if you are coming up after a storm, or for a late return after night skiing when the road has refrozen. The minivan (from $100) is the sensible car for three or more people with skis and boot bags; a sedan (from $80) suits two with gear. Groups and ski clubs travel in a Sprinter, from $170.

What is skiing at Ak-Bulak like?

Ak-Bulak has run for about two decades and is used by race clubs as a training base, which shows in the grooming. A Doppelmayr gondola of about 2.35 km lifts you from the base at around 1,640 m to about 2,000 m in roughly seven minutes; Leitner chairlifts continue up, with the top of the lift system quoted at 2,664 m. There are around 11 marked pistes and about 14 km of skiing, mostly red on the upper mountain and blue and green lower down. Very little is black.

Figures differ between sources (some guides give 1,600–2,200 m and eight lifts), so check the resort's current lift map before you go.

How much is a ski pass at Ak-Bulak?

Ak-Bulak has historically been the cheapest of the three Almaty resorts outside the holidays: in 2025/26 a guide quoted about 5,800 ₸ for a weekday adult day pass and 8,000 ₸ at weekends. Over the New Year holidays prices jump: until 11 January 2026 the resort's own posts showed 22,000 ₸ for 09:00–17:00 and 18,000 ₸ for the evening session. Tickets have been sold at the ticket office rather than online, and a plastic card deposit applies. 2026/27 prices were not published as of mid-October 2026; budget for an increase. Expect an eco-fee of about 600 ₸ per person on the access road.

Where to stay, eat and rent gear

The resort hotel has 63 rooms with a restaurant, swimming pool and spa; with so few beds it fills at New Year and on long weekends, so book it before the car. Most visitors stay in Almaty and do a day trip, or base themselves at Oi-Qaragai or in the city and visit Ak-Bulak once. Rental and a ski school are at the base. Service in the restaurant can be slow at lunchtime, so a sandwich from Talgar is not a bad idea. Mobile coverage is good at the base and patchy on the upper lifts.

Day trip or one way: how to book the car

Prices are per car and one way: $80 sedan, $100 minivan, $130 4x4, $170 Sprinter. For a ski day, book two transfers (morning up, afternoon down) or keep the car all day with a private driver for the day if you want to combine Ak-Bulak with lunch in the mountains or a stop at the Turgen gorge, which is further east along the same highway. Skis, boards and child seats are free. Pay the driver at the end, by card or cash, in USD or tenge; free cancellation up to 24 hours before. WhatsApp +996 777 889 992, reply in about 15 minutes. Questions

How do I get to Ak-Bulak from Almaty?

By car: about 60 km and 1 h 15 min east via the Kuldzha highway to Talgar, then up a paved mountain road. A private transfer is from $80 per car with an English-speaking driver. Bus 224 exists but is irregular and takes up to two hours, and app taxis often refuse the mountain road.

How much is a taxi to Ak-Bulak?

About 7,000–10,000 ₸ one way by app taxi in 2025/26, if a driver accepts the trip and has room for skis. A private RideKZ transfer is $80 per sedan, $100 per minivan and $130 per 4x4, fixed and per car, with your ski bags inside and the price confirmed before you travel.

Is Ak-Bulak better than Shymbulak?

For quiet slopes and long groomed reds on a weekday, often yes, and it is not affected by the Medeu road closure. Shymbulak has higher terrain, around 920 m of vertical up to roughly 3,200 m, a longer season and far more après-ski. Many visitors ski Shymbulak most days and give Ak-Bulak one day.

When is Ak-Bulak open?

Usually mid-December to late March or early April. In 2025/26 it opened on 14 December; in 2023/24 it ran 1 December to 10 April. The 2026/27 opening date depends on snowfall and had not been announced by mid-October 2026. Night skiing runs on two evenings a week.

How far is Ak-Bulak from Almaty airport?

About an hour. The airport is on the north-east side of Almaty, so the driver goes straight out to the Kuldzha highway and Talgar without crossing the centre. Transfers start at $80 per car, with meet and greet, flight tracking and 90 minutes of free waiting.

Can I stay overnight at Ak-Bulak?

Yes, the resort hotel has 63 rooms with a pool and spa, but it fills quickly over New Year and long weekends. Book the room first, then the transfer. Many skiers stay in Almaty instead and do Ak-Bulak as a day trip with a driver.
