Turkestan airport transfer to the city and Yasawi mausoleum
Turkistan International Airport (HSA, Hazrat Sultan) is about 16 km north-east of the city centre, a 20-minute drive, and a private transfer costs from $35 per car with an English-speaking driver. The driver tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals with a name sign and waits 90 minutes after landing at no charge. It is the simplest way into a city where taxis are scarce at the airport and almost nobody speaks English.

Which flights fly into Turkestan's new airport?
The airport was built in about a year and opened in late 2020 with a 3,300 m runway and a terminal sized for up to 3 million passengers a year. Traffic is still modest (about 197,000 passengers in the first eight months of 2024), which means short queues and a calm arrivals hall.
Domestic: regular flights from Almaty and Astana (FlyArystan, SCAT, Qazaq Air), plus Aktau, Aktobe, Oral and Kostanay at various times.
International: the route that put Turkestan on the map is Istanbul. Turkish Airlines started flying in 2021 and FlyArystan has served Sabiha Gökçen; for many Turkish and European pilgrims this is the direct way in. Over 2024–2026 the airport has also had flights to Kuwait (Jazeera Airways), Abu Dhabi, Samarkand (Qazaq Air) and seasonal Antalya, with Baku, Moscow and Urumqi under discussion. As of October 2026 we found no confirmed direct Sharjah or Dubai service: Gulf travellers usually connect through Almaty (Air Arabia to ALA, then 1 h 25 min on FlyArystan) or fly into Shymkent instead. Schedules here change every season, so treat this list as a guide and confirm your own flight.
Turkestan or Shymkent airport: which should I fly into?
If your flight goes to Turkestan, use it: you are 20 minutes from the mausoleum. If it does not, Shymkent (CIT) has far more international connections, including Dubai, Sharjah, Doha, Istanbul and, since 2025, Seoul, Shanghai and Munich. From Shymkent airport it is about 165 km and 2 hours to Turkestan on a four-lane highway; we meet you in CIT arrivals and drive straight there with our Shymkent to Turkestan transfer. A common pattern is to fly into one and out of the other, which avoids doubling back. For Shymkent arrivals that stay in the city, see Shymkent airport transfer.
What is the drive like and where will I stay?
From the terminal the road runs south-west across flat steppe into the city, mostly a straight four-lane road with no tolls. You see the turquoise dome of the mausoleum before you reach the outskirts. Most visitors stay either in the Karavan Saray complex next to the mausoleum, a purpose-built Silk Road-style quarter of hotels, restaurants and a canal with boats, which opened in 2019, or in one of the newer hotels along the main avenues a few minutes away. Ask your driver to go via the mausoleum's front square if you land at dusk: the floodlit portal is one of the best first impressions in Central Asia.
Visiting the Khoja Ahmed Yasawi mausoleum after you land
The mausoleum, built 1389–1405 on Timur's orders and left unfinished, is Kazakhstan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site and its most important pilgrimage place. What to know before going straight there from the airport:
- Tickets: since 10 June 2026 foreign visitors from outside the CIS pay 5,000 KZT (CIS citizens 2,000 KZT); the ticket covers the mausoleum, the Yasawi museum and the hall of rare exhibits. The surrounding Hazret Sultan grounds are free to walk.
- Dress: it is an active shrine. Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair inside (scarves are usually available at the entrance). Shoes stay on in most halls, but follow the signs.
- Security: since 2026 there are turnstiles and bag screening, and large bags may have to go into storage. Carry your passport. Our driver can keep luggage in the car while you visit.
- Hours: the reserve-museum sets seasonal hours (roughly daytime, closing earlier in winter) and can change them for religious holidays and state visits; check the day before.
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the mausoleum, the underground Hilvet mosque and the Rabia Sultan Begim mausoleum. For the wider area, including Arystan-Bab and Otrar, see our Turkestan, Arystan-Bab and Otrar day trip.
Is it easy to get a taxi at Turkestan airport?
Not reliably. Flights are few, so private drivers gather for each arrival and set prices on the spot; Kazakh media reported years ago that they charged several times the official fare, and the pattern has not changed much. Yandex Go works in Turkestan, but cars near the airport are sparse, especially at night, and the app needs local data. If you arrive late with family or luggage, or as a group, a pre-booked car is the low-stress option. Groups of pilgrims and tour parties of up to 16 fit in one Sprinter.
Arrival tips for Turkestan
- Heat: June to August regularly passes 40 °C. Plan sightseeing for early morning and evening; spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best months.
- Crowds: Nauryz (21–23 March) and Kurban Ait bring large domestic crowds and higher hotel prices.
- Cash: there is an ATM in the terminal; Karavan Saray restaurants accept cards, but small shops and the bazaar prefer tenge.
- Onward: Tashkent is about 280 km away via Shymkent and the Kaplanbek border; ask us about combining legs. Most visitors continue to Shymkent or loop through Sauran and Otrar on a 3-day Silk Road tour.
- Booking: WhatsApp +996 777 889 992 (reply in about 15 minutes, 8:00–23:00 Almaty time). Free cancellation up to 24 hours before landing.
