Kegen–Karkara border crossing: hours and status for 2026/27

Kegen–Karkara (Karkyra on the Kyrgyz side) is the shortest road from Almaty to Karakol: about 420 km and 7–8 hours with the crossing, against roughly 635 km and 10–11 hours via Korday and Bishkek, and a private transfer costs from $280 per car either way. Checked 13 October 2026: the post works in daylight only; in summer 2026 it ran 08:00–21:00 Bishkek time (21 July–31 August), and no regime for winter 2026/27 has been announced. A round-the-clock protocol passed Kazakhstan's lower house in January 2026, but we have found no start date. Two rules of thumb: reach the post by 15:00 Almaty time, and if you are entering Kyrgyzstan on an e-visa, use Korday instead.

  • Status 13 Oct 2026Daylight hours; winter 2026/27 not announced

  • Usual pattern≈08:00–18:00, roughly mid-May to October
  • Almaty → post≈290 km, 4–4.5 h

Is the Kegen–Karkara border open right now?

As of 13 October 2026 the crossing is operating in daylight hours, which is how it has worked since the rebuilt Kyrgyz post reopened in May 2019. Information online contradicts itself because headlines from different years circulate together, so here is the sequence:

DateWhat happened
May 2019Rebuilt Karkyra post reopens as the closest Almaty–Issyk-Kul crossing
Dec 2020Kyrgyz side closes the post "until spring", citing weather
Apr 2024Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan sign a protocol moving Kegen–Karkyra to 24-hour operation
Aug 2025Kyrgyz media report the Kyrgyz post going 24-hour
21 Jan 2026Kazakhstan's Mazhilis ratifies the protocol and sends it to the Senate; no start date given
21 Jul–31 Aug 2026Temporary extended summer hours, 08:00–21:00 Bishkek time (07:00–20:00 Almaty)
13 Oct 2026No announcement of 24/7 operation on the Kazakh side or of winter 2026/27 hours

A post is only as open as its stricter side. Until both border services publish the 24-hour regime as in force, plan on daylight only.

What are the opening hours, and what time zone?

The long-standing pattern reported by travellers is about 08:00–18:00 daily, from roughly mid-May to the end of October. In peak summer 2026 the Kyrgyz side stayed open until 21:00 Bishkek time. Remember the one-hour difference: Kyrgyzstan is on UTC+6, Kazakhstan on UTC+5, so 18:00 in Karkyra is 17:00 in Kegen.

The post is small, with a couple of passport windows on each side. On summer weekends a line of dozens of cars builds up, and processing is slow because every vehicle is inspected. Arriving an hour before closing risks being turned back, and Kegen has only basic guesthouses. Our drivers aim to be at the barrier by 15:00 Almaty time, which means leaving Almaty by about 10:00, or by 07:00 if you stop at Charyn Canyon on the way.

Will Kegen be open in winter 2026/27?

Not announced as of 13 October 2026. Historically the crossing closed for the cold season (the Kyrgyz side shut it "until spring" in December 2020) and was treated as a May–October route. The 24-hour protocol points towards year-round operation, but we found neither a Senate vote and presidential signature with an in-force date, nor any winter schedule from either border service. We will update this page when one appears, and will ask both border services directly in November.

Even if the post stays open, the approach crosses the Kegen plateau at around 1,800–2,000 m, open steppe that drifts with snow and sees −25 °C nights. For skiing in Karakol from Almaty between December and March, plan on the Korday–Bishkek–Balykchy route. We confirm the post and the road the day before departure; if Kegen is closed, your driver goes via Korday at the same price, or we move your date or refund in full.

Which passports need a visa, and is the Kyrgyz e-visa accepted at Karkara?

Kegen–Karkara is a multilateral crossing: foreigners may use it, not only Kazakh and Kyrgyz citizens. As of October 2026:

The e-visa question. The official list of land checkpoints for Kyrgyz e-visa holders names four posts on the Kazakh border: Ak-Zhol (Korday), Ak-Tilek, Chaldybar and Chon-Kapka. Karkyra is not on it. One long-running overland guide reports e-visa holders being sent back to use Ak-Zhol; a travel blog updated in September 2026 says e-visas are accepted. Officers may well let you through, but being turned away here costs you a full day and roughly 500 km of driving. Our advice: if your entry depends on an e-visa, cross at Korday. If you hold a sticker visa or are visa-free, Kegen is fine.

Leaving Kazakhstan, make sure your stay is within your allowance; many nationalities are limited to 90 days in any 180, so a Karakol trip does not reset the count. Carry your passport with six months' validity; children with one parent need a notarised consent letter from the other.

How does the crossing work, and what does the driver do?

Unlike Korday there is no separate pedestrian terminal; the process is built around the car. Almaty to Karakol:

  1. First gate. Passports are handed through the car window for a preliminary check.
  2. Kazakh exit building. Everyone gets out and goes to one of two windows for the exit stamp. Your driver stays with the car, which is inspected, sometimes over a pit, while customs check the vehicle papers. Bags may be opened.
  3. Neutral strip. A short drive or walk to the Kyrgyz post.
  4. Kyrgyz entry. Passport windows again; the car and the international transport permit are checked. Count 30–60 minutes for the whole crossing on a quiet day, 1.5–2 hours behind a summer queue.
  5. Back in the car, watch one hour forward, and on to Karakol.
Your driverYou

On a RideKZ transfer the car is cleared for international routes, so you keep one car and one English-speaking driver from Almaty to Karakol with no swap at the border.

What is the road like from Almaty to Karakol via Kegen?

There is no exchange office and no ATM at the post, and mobile signal is patchy for the last 30 km on both sides. Bring some Kyrgyz som or US dollars from Almaty. The only toilets are basic ones at the post itself; use the café in Kegen. Light is best in the Karkara valley in the late afternoon, which works neatly with a midday crossing.

The two-day route via Charyn and the Kolsai lakes starts at $480 for a minivan and $560 for a 4x4, with the driver's lodging included. Can I use a Kyrgyz e-visa at the Karkara crossing?

4 posts on the Kazakh border are on the official e-visa list, and Karkyra is not one of them; only Ak-Zhol (Korday), Ak-Tilek, Chaldybar and Chon-Kapka are. One blog updated in September 2026 says it worked, another guide reports refusals. If your entry depends on an e-visa, cross at Korday.

How long does it take from Almaty to Karakol via Kegen?

7–8 hours including the crossing: about 4–4.5 hours from Almaty to the post, 30–60 minutes at the border on a quiet day and 2–2.5 hours from the post to Karakol. Via Korday and Bishkek it is 10–11 hours. Add 2–3 hours if you stop at Charyn Canyon.
