Aktau and the Mangystau desert by private car
Aktau is the only practical gateway to Mangystau, Kazakhstan's desert of white chalk cliffs and underground mosques: the airport transfer is from $40 per car, a Torysh and Sherkala day trip is $330 per Land Cruiser, Bozzhyra is a 12–14 hour day at $420, and the full 3-day Mangystau tour is $1,350. Every booking includes an English-speaking driver.

Day trips by private car
Aktau is a Soviet-built city on the Caspian Sea, with a long seafront promenade, decent hotels and very little else to detain you. What it offers is access. Inland lies Mangystau, one of the most striking landscapes in Central Asia: the white-and-pink pinnacles of Bozzhyra on the edge of the Ustyurt plateau, the stone spheres of Torysh, the lion-shaped mesa of Sherkala, salt flats and the underground pilgrim mosques of Shopan-Ata and Beket-Ata. There is almost no public transport, no signage in English and long stretches of gravel and dirt, so the region is visited by Land Cruiser with a driver who knows the tracks.
When to go
Mid-April to early June and mid-September to October. Summer brings 40 °C and harsh midday light; winter brings wind, cold and occasional mud that closes the tracks. Rain at any time of year can make the clay pans impassable for a day or two; if that happens we move your date or refund you in full.
Arriving
Aktau airport (SCO) is about 25 km from the city, and direct flights from Almaty take roughly 2.5–3.5 hours. An Aktau airport transfer is from $40 per car; many flights land late, so expect the $10 night surcharge between 23:00 and 06:00. If you are heading straight into the desert, the same driver can take you there without stopping in town.
Day trips
The Torysh, Sherkala and Valley of Castles day trip is the best single-day introduction: about 400 km and 10–11 hours on a loop from Aktau, $330 for the whole Land Cruiser. Bozzhyra by Land Cruiser is the headline view of Mangystau, but at about 300 km each way it is a 12–14 hour day with a pre-dawn start, $420 per car. Many travellers prefer to sleep in a yurt camp near the valley for sunset and sunrise.
Three days in Mangystau
The Mangystau 3-day tour combines everything: Sultan-Epe, Sherkala and Torysh on day one, Shopan-Ata and Beket-Ata on day two with a night above Bozzhyra, sunrise over the pinnacles and the Tuzbair salt flat on day three. It is about 1,100 km, $1,350 for the Land Cruiser (up to 4 guests), with fuel and the driver's lodging and meals included.
Practical notes
- Only 4x4s are offered for desert trips, for good reason: a third or more of the distance is off asphalt.
- Bring 2–3 litres of water per person, sun protection and a layer for the wind; shops and toilets are rare once you leave the paved road.
- Mobile signal disappears for long stretches; agree a meeting point and time with your driver before you walk off, and tell family you may be offline for hours.
