Almaty to Bishkek by private car
Almaty to Bishkek is 240 km and usually 4–5 hours door to door, Korday border included, from $190 for the whole car with an English-speaking driver. You choose between two formats: the same car from your Almaty hotel to your Bishkek address, or a border swap from $130, where one driver brings you to Korday and a second meets you on the Kyrgyz side. Either way the price is fixed before you travel and you pay the driver at the end. One thing to set before you leave: your watch, because Bishkek is an hour ahead.

Same car door to door or a border swap: which should I book?
This is the question competitors leave unanswered, so here is the plain version. Nobody rides across Korday inside a car: every passenger walks through the passport halls. What differs is what happens to the car and your luggage.
Option 1: the same car, door to door (from $190)
Your driver collects you in Almaty and takes you all the way to your address in Bishkek, in a car cleared for international routes. At Korday the driver drops you at the pedestrian terminal, takes the car through the vehicle lane and waits for you past the Kyrgyz post. Suitcases, ski bags, child seats and shopping stay in the trunk the whole time. The one drawback: on Friday evenings and before long holidays the car lane leaving Kazakhstan can move more slowly than the foot terminal, so you may wait 20–40 minutes for the car on the far side.
Option 2: the border swap ($130 sedan, $180 minivan)
Your driver takes you from Almaty to the Korday checkpoint. You walk through both posts with your bags, and a Kyrgyz driver with a name sign meets you on the Ak-Zhol side for the last 20 km or so into Bishkek. No car has to queue, so on busy days the swap is often the faster option, and it costs $60–70 less. You get both drivers' names and plate numbers the evening before, and the second driver tracks your progress on WhatsApp.
| Same car | Border swap | |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan, up to 3 guests | $190 | $130 |
| Minivan, up to 6 guests | $250 | $180 |
| 4x4 / Sprinter | $280 / $380 | not offered |
| Luggage at the border | stays in the car | you carry it ~300 m |
| Best for | families, seniors, skis, 3+ bags | couples with carry-ons, peak days |
Our rule of thumb: more than one large case per person, small children or anyone who should not haul bags through a terminal, keep one car. Light travellers on a Friday afternoon, take the swap.
How long is the drive from Almaty to Bishkek?
Pure driving time is about 3.5 hours: roughly 220 km across Kazakhstan on the A2 highway and about 20 km from the border into central Bishkek. The rest is the border. On a weekday morning Korday typically takes 20–40 minutes; on Friday evenings, early May and summer holiday weekends it can stretch to 1.5–2 hours or more. In early May 2026 the car queue towards Ak-Zhol ran for several hundred metres.
- Road works leaving Almaty. On 20 July 2026 work began to widen the Almaty–Bishkek highway from four to eight lanes between km 19 and km 27 in Karasay district, around the Kaskelen exit. Until it is finished, expect lane closures and allow an extra 20–30 minutes at rush hour (as of October 2026; no completion date has been published).
- Best departure window. 6:00–9:00 on a weekday. Worst: Friday after 16:00 and the evening before a long weekend.
- The clock. Kazakhstan moved to a single time zone, UTC+5, in March 2024; Kyrgyzstan stays on UTC+6. Leave Almaty at 9:00, spend 4.5 hours on the road, and Bishkek clocks will show about 14:30. Bear that in mind for hotel check-in and dinner reservations.
What is the road like, and where do we stop?
The A2 is a good asphalt highway across open steppe, with the Zailiysky Alatau on your left and, later, the snow line of the Kyrgyz Range ahead. As of October 2026 there is no toll section for cars on this stretch; if that changes, tolls are included in your price anyway. Landmarks, measured roughly from central Almaty:
- Kaskelen, ≈25 km. Large fuel stations with clean toilets and shops; the road works zone is just before it.
- Uzynagash, ≈60 km. Roadside cafes serving samsa, lagman and tea. A good 15-minute stop. This is also the turn for the UNESCO-listed Tamgaly petroglyphs; the detour adds about 2.5–3 hours and must be agreed when you book.
- Korday pass, ≈180 km. A low pass (around 1,100 m) but the one place on the route where winter matters: ice, fog and, in a real blizzard, short police closures. Our cars run on winter tyres from November to March.
- Korday village and checkpoint, ≈220 km. Exchange booths and the last Kazakh fuel station.
Stops on request, up to one hour in total, are included. Mobile signal is good along almost the whole road, with short gaps on the pass.
How do I cross the Korday border on foot?
The Korday–Ak-Zhol crossing is open 24 hours a day. The sequence takes 20 minutes on a quiet morning:
- Your driver drops you at the pedestrian entrance of the Kazakh post.
- Kazakh exit control: passport check and an exit stamp; bags may go through a scanner.
- A short fenced walk across neutral ground to the Kyrgyz post.
- Kyrgyz entry control and stamp.
- Your car is waiting: the same driver if you booked door to door, or a Kyrgyz driver with your name on a sign if you booked the swap.
Both countries are in the Eurasian Economic Union, so there is no full customs clearance, but spot checks happen. Queue patterns, holiday peaks and photos are on our Korday border guide.
Do I need a visa to travel from Almaty to Bishkek?
- Kyrgyzstan. Citizens of the US, UK, all EU states, Australia, Japan, South Korea and around 50 other countries enter visa-free. Since 31 December 2025 the limit for that group is 30 days within any 60-day period (it used to be 60 days). Indian citizens generally need a Kyrgyz e-visa; check the official portal before you travel.
- Coming back to Kazakhstan. If your flight home leaves from Almaty, count your remaining Kazakh visa-free days before you go. Many nationalities get 30 days per visit, Indian citizens 14, and a quick trip to Bishkek does not necessarily give you a fresh allowance.
- Documents in the car. Keep passports on you, not in the trunk: you need them at both posts.
Rules change; confirm for your own passport a week before departure.
What is included in the price, and how do I pay?
Prices are per car, not per seat, and fixed when you book: sedan (Toyota Camry or similar, up to 3 guests) $190, minivan (Hyundai Staria or similar, up to 6) $250, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 4x4 $280, Mercedes Sprinter for up to 16 $380. Border swap: $130 sedan, $180 minivan. There is no night surcharge on this route.
Included: an English-speaking driver, fuel, tolls, parking, waiting at the border, stops up to one hour, bottled water, free child seats on request and room for ski or board bags. You pay the driver at the end in US dollars or tenge, cash or card, with no deposit. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. Book on WhatsApp at +996 777 889 992 with your date, pickup address and number of bags; a person replies in about 15 minutes between 8:00 and 23:00 Almaty time. Coming straight off a flight? See Almaty airport to Bishkek. Heading further, to Issyk-Kul? Almaty to Karakol runs without a stop in Bishkek. All routes are on the price list.
Is a private car better than the bus or a flight?
The bus from Sayran station is the cheapest way at about 3,000–3,300 tenge (2026), but it takes 5–6 hours, you walk the border with your luggage, and travellers regularly report buses leaving before everyone has cleared passport control. It ends at Bishkek's western bus station, still a taxi ride from most hotels. Flights take about an hour in the air, yet once you add the drive to Almaty airport, check-in and the 25–30 km from Manas into Bishkek, door-to-door time is the same 4–5 hours as the road. A private car is the only option that starts at your lobby, waits for you at the border and ends at your next door.
Ways to do it, compared
| Option | Time | Price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus from Sayran bus station | 5–6 h | ≈$6–7 per seat (3,000–3,300 KZT, 2026) | 5 departures a day; you walk the border, the bus may not wait |
| Per-person shared transfer (Daytrip) | 4–5 h | from $42 per person (2026) | price per seat, not per car |
| Other private transfer agencies | 4–5 h | ≈$170–215 per sedan (2026) | Kiwitaxi, Advantour; border handling rarely explained |
| Flight Almaty–Bishkek | ≈1 h flight, 4–5 h door to door | daily fare | Manas airport is 25–30 km from Bishkek |

Questions
How much is a private transfer from Almaty to Bishkek?
$190 for a sedan carrying up to three people, and that is the price for the whole car. A minivan for six is $250, a 4x4 $280 and a 16-seat Mercedes Sprinter $380. The border swap, where you change cars at Korday, costs $130 for a sedan or $180 for a minivan. English-speaking driver, fuel and border waiting are included.
Does the car cross the border from Almaty to Bishkek?
Yes, if you book the same car door to door. The car crosses, but you do not ride in it: all passengers walk through passport control while the driver takes the car through the vehicle lane and meets you on the Kyrgyz side, bags still in the trunk. With the border swap you carry your bags across and a second driver meets you.
How long does it take to drive from Almaty to Bishkek?
4–5 hours door to door in most cases. Driving time is about 3.5 hours for 240 km, and Korday adds 20 minutes on a quiet weekday morning to two hours or more on Friday evenings and holidays. Road works at km 19–27 near Kaskelen can add 20–30 minutes at rush hour. Bishkek clocks are one hour ahead.
Is there a time difference between Almaty and Bishkek?
1 hour: Bishkek is ahead. Kazakhstan switched to a single time zone, UTC+5, in March 2024, while Kyrgyzstan stays on UTC+6. Leave Almaty at 9:00 and you arrive around 14:00–14:30 Bishkek time. Check that your phone has updated before you book a dinner table or tell someone when to meet you.
Is the border swap faster than keeping one car?
Often by 20–60 minutes on busy days, because no car has to queue in the vehicle lane leaving Kazakhstan. On a quiet weekday morning the difference is small. The trade-off is carrying your luggage roughly 300 metres through two posts, so the swap suits light travellers rather than families with several suitcases.
Do I need a visa for Kyrgyzstan if I am travelling from Almaty?
No visa for citizens of the US, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, South Korea and about 50 other countries, but since 31 December 2025 their stay is limited to 30 days within any 60-day period. Indian citizens generally need a Kyrgyz e-visa. Confirm the current rules for your passport before travel.
