Astana airport transfer to the city by private car

Astana airport (NQZ) to the city is about 17 km and 25–35 minutes, and a private transfer costs from $45 for the whole car with an English-speaking driver: $45 for a sedan, $65 for a minivan, $90 for a Land Cruiser-class 4x4 and $120 for a 16-seat Sprinter. Your driver tracks the flight, waits inside the arrivals hall with a name sign and gives you 90 minutes of free waiting from actual landing. Between 23:00 and 06:00 add $10. In a city where January nights reach −30 °C, the most useful thing about this ride is simple: you never stand outside looking for a car.

How much is a private transfer from Astana airport to the city?

One fixed price for the whole car, to any address inside Astana, whatever the weather or the time your flight finally lands:

CarGuestsPrice per car
Sedan (Toyota Camry or similar)up to 3$45
Minivan (Hyundai Staria / Toyota Alphard or similar)up to 6$65
4x4 (Land Cruiser Prado / 300)up to 4$90
Mercedes Sprinterup to 16$120

Night pickups between 23:00 and 06:00 add $10, which matters in Astana because a large share of long-haul arrivals from Europe, the Gulf and East Asia land in the small hours. Included: the English-speaking driver, meet and greet with a name sign, flight tracking, 90 minutes of free waiting, parking at the terminal, bottled water, child seats and ski bags on request. You pay the driver at the end of the ride by card or in cash, in US dollars or tenge; nothing is taken in advance and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

For comparison, Yandex Go and inDrive quoted around 4,000 ₸ (about $8) for the same ride on a calm day in 2026, and pre-booked taxi firms in Astana charged 11,500–16,000 ₸ in 2025. The apps are fine if you have a local SIM, travel light and land in daylight. The fixed transfer is for the arrivals when they are not: 02:00 landings, families with car seats, delegations, and the nights when the wind is blowing snow sideways across the car park and app prices have tripled. For a full breakdown of the bus, the new light rail and the apps, see our Astana airport guide.

Where will my driver meet me at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport?

NQZ has two terminals. Terminal 1, opened in 2017, handles international flights; Terminal 2, the original 2005 building designed by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, handles domestic flights. An indoor gallery links them, so even if you arrive on a domestic connection from Almaty or Shymkent you never have to cross outside.

Send us your flight number and your driver will be standing at the exit from baggage reclaim of the correct terminal with your name on a sign. Because the flight is tracked, an early landing or a two-hour delay does not cost you anything: the 90 free minutes start from the actual touchdown, which comfortably covers passport control, a slow bag belt and a SIM card stop. Your driver then walks you out to the car, which is parked a few metres from the doors and already warm (or, in July, already cool: Astana summers reach +35 °C).

The evening before you fly, you receive the driver's name, phone number and number plate on WhatsApp, so you can message him directly if your bag is lost or you get held up at immigration.

How long does the drive from Astana airport take, and what is the road like?

The airport sits on the south-eastern edge of the capital, on the road towards Karaganda. Your driver takes Kabanbay Batyr Avenue, a broad multi-lane boulevard that runs straight into the Left Bank, past the new light-rail viaducts and residential towers. There are no toll sections and no police checkpoints on this road, only speed cameras, which our drivers respect.

Rush hour (roughly 08:00–09:30 and 17:30–19:30) adds 10–20 minutes on the bridges over the Ishim river. Times are as of October 2026; check the current picture in 2GIS if you are cutting it fine for a meeting.

What happens if I land in a blizzard?

This is the honest part. Astana is one of the coldest capitals on earth: the average January temperature is around −15 °C, nights of −30 °C come most winters, and the open steppe wind turns −20 °C into something that feels much worse. Several times a winter a buran (blizzard) blows through, and the road authority KazAvtoZhol closes intercity highways out of the city to all traffic, sometimes for 12–24 hours. On 16 December 2025, for example, the highway north towards Shchuchinsk and Burabay was closed from km 18 to km 232 from mid-morning until the next day.

The 17 km airport road itself is inside the city and is a snow-clearing priority, so it very rarely closes. What a blizzard does do is slow everything: expect 40–60 minutes instead of 25–35, and flight delays or diversions. That is why the price is fixed and the waiting is tied to your real landing time. If your flight diverts to Karaganda or Almaty, message us and we will rearrange the pickup at no charge.

If you were planning to go straight on to the lakes, check the forecast with us before you land. On a closure day the sensible plan is a night in Astana and the airport to Burabay transfer moved to the next morning, rather than sitting at a police barrier on the city edge.

Practical winter advice: keep a warm coat, hat and gloves in your hand luggage, not in the hold. Phone batteries drain fast in the cold, so charge in the car. Winter tyres are standard on all our cars from October to April.

Which car should I choose for the Astana airport run?

A sedan takes three guests and two large suitcases plus cabin bags. In winter, coats and boots take space, so if you are three adults with full-size cases, or four people of any kind, choose the minivan for $65: a Hyundai Staria or Toyota Alphard with room for six and their luggage. The 4x4 at $90 is not needed for the city road, but some guests choose a Land Cruiser for arrivals with a business principal or for an onward winter drive; it is also the car we prefer for a same-day continuation to Burabay in deep snow. The Sprinter at $120 is for delegations, sports teams and conference groups of up to 16, with one sign for the whole group.

Child seats and boosters are free; just tell us the children's ages when you book. Ski and snowboard bags travel free too.

Do you handle business delegations and returns to the airport?

Many NQZ arrivals come for ministries, the Astana International Financial Centre at the former EXPO site, or international forums. We regularly combine several cars for one group: a 4x4 or sedan for the principals, minivans or a Sprinter for the team and luggage, with one coordinated meet at arrivals and one quote. If the trip continues with meetings across town, book a private driver in Astana for the day so the same car waits outside each building.

The return to the airport costs the same as the arrival. Leave Left Bank hotels 2 h 45 min to 3 h before an international departure and 2 hours before a domestic one; after a night of heavy snow, leave 30–40 minutes earlier still. For early flights there is no public transport before 06:00, so a booked car is the only stress-free option. Heading south afterwards? How do I book and pay?

Message us on WhatsApp at +996 777 889 992 (8:00–23:00 Almaty time, reply in about 15 minutes) with your flight number, date, number of guests and bags, and your hotel or address. You get a written confirmation with the fixed price, then the driver's details the evening before. Pay the driver after the ride by card or cash in dollars or tenge. Your car is driven by a licensed, vetted, English-speaking driver. More routes from the capital are on the Astana page.

Questions

How much is a taxi from Astana airport to the city centre?

$45 for a private sedan for up to three guests, as a fixed price for the whole car to any Astana address; a minivan for six is $65, a 4x4 $90 and a Sprinter $120, plus $10 between 23:00 and 06:00. Yandex Go and inDrive quote about 4,000 ₸ (≈$8) on a calm day in 2026 but surge in storms.

How long does it take from Astana airport to the city?

25–35 minutes by car to Baiterek, Khan Shatyr and the Left Bank hotels, about 17 km. EXPO is 15–20 minutes away, Nurly Zhol station about 20 and the Right Bank 30–45 minutes. Add 10–20 minutes at rush hour and allow 40–60 minutes in a blizzard.

Will my driver wait if my flight to Astana is delayed?

Yes, 90 minutes of free waiting counted from your actual landing time, because your driver tracks the flight. A delay of several hours costs nothing extra. If the flight diverts to Karaganda or Almaty in bad weather, message us on WhatsApp and the pickup is rearranged without charge.

Does the Astana airport road close in blizzards?

Rarely. The 17 km airport road is inside the city and is cleared first, though a blizzard can double the drive to 40–60 minutes. Intercity highways, such as the road to Burabay, are closed by KazAvtoZhol several times a winter, sometimes for 12–24 hours, so onward trips may need to move by a day.

Is there a train from Astana airport to the city?

Yes, since 16 May 2026 the driverless LRT light rail runs 22.4 km from the airport to Nurly Zhol station for 200 ₸, roughly 06:00–23:00 every 5–6 minutes. It passes the government district, but most hotels are still a walk or taxi from a station, which is hard with luggage at −25 °C.

Can I pay for the Astana airport transfer by card?

Yes. You pay the driver at the end of the ride by bank card or in cash, in US dollars or tenge, with nothing taken in advance. The price is fixed when you book and does not change with traffic, weather or delays. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
