Private driver in Almaty by the day
A private car with an English-speaking driver in Almaty costs from $160 for the whole car for a day of 8 hours and 200 km: $160 for a sedan, $200 for a minivan, $250 for a 4x4 and $330 for a 16-seat Sprinter. Fuel, parking and waiting time are included, and extra hours or kilometres are quoted before you book, never added at the end. How much does a private driver in Almaty cost per day?
One price for the whole car, not per person. The day is 8 hours from pickup and 200 km, which is more than most Almaty days need: a full city-and-mountains loop is usually 80–130 km.
| Car | Guests | Day: 8 h / 200 km |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Toyota Camry or similar) | up to 3 | $160 |
| Minivan (Hyundai Staria / Toyota Alphard or similar) | up to 6 | $200 |
| 4x4 (Land Cruiser Prado / 300) | up to 4 | $250 |
| Sprinter | up to 16 | $330 |
Included: the English-speaking driver, fuel, parking, bottled water and child seats on request. Not included: entry tickets, the gondola, meals and wine tastings. If you think the day will run past 8 hours or 200 km, tell us when you book and we quote the extra hours and kilometres up front, so the final bill matches the quote. For a single ride from the airport, the fixed Almaty airport transfer is the better buy.
What does a classic Almaty day with a driver look like?
City, Kok-Tobe and Medeu is the day most first-time visitors book, and it fits comfortably in 8 hours:
- 9:00 — pickup at your hotel. Panfilov Park and the wooden Ascension Cathedral, built in 1907 without iron nails according to local lore, are best before the tour groups arrive.
- 10:00 — Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar), five minutes away: horse-meat sausage, kurt, dried apricots and Korean salads. Your driver can translate the haggling.
- 11:30 — up the Medeu gorge, about 15 km and 30–40 minutes from the centre, to the high-altitude ice rink at roughly 1,690 m. From here the gondola continues to Shymbulak ski resort; your driver waits at the bottom.
- 14:30 — late lunch back in town, then Kok-Tobe hill at 1,100 m for the view over the city grid. Light is softest an hour before sunset.
- 17:00 — the Arbat (Zhibek Zholy pedestrian street) or a coffee on Panfilov Street, then back to the hotel before the evening traffic peaks.
If you only want the mountains, the fixed-price Medeu and Shymbulak trip is shorter and cheaper.
Can the driver take us up to Shymbulak or Big Almaty Lake?
Not all the way, and this is where a local driver earns his fee. As of October 2026 the road from Medeu up to Shymbulak (the Medeu–Tuyuk-Su section) is restricted to service vehicles and residents from 24 July to 30 November 2026 for engineering works, so the car stops at Medeu and you take the gondola. Check the rules again from December, when the ski season opens.
Big Almaty Lake sits at about 2,500 m, roughly 30 km from the centre. Since August 2025 the national park has closed the upper road to private vehicles, and in November 2025 it said it was not considering reopening it. In practice your driver takes you as far as the checkpoint and you walk the last stretch, so bring proper shoes and a warm layer: it is often 10–15 °C colder than in the city. The lake is turquoise from July to September; mornings have the clearest water and the fewest people. See the separate Big Almaty Lake trip for current access details.
Can I do a wine-tasting day from Almaty?
Yes, and having a driver is the whole point: you taste, he drives. The best-known estate is Arba Wine in the Assa valley near the village of Karakemer, east of Almaty, with vineyards at about 1,000 m planted with Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. Its classic tasting of six reserve wines with a short film on the estate runs 45–90 minutes; in 2026 listings the average spend was about 6,600 tenge ($13) per person. Visits are by appointment only and the season runs roughly May to October, so book the tasting before you book the car.
Expect around 1.5 hours each way on the Kuldzha highway. Pair it with the waterfalls of the Turgen gorge, which is on the same side of the city, and the day still fits inside 8 hours. Other producers in the Almaty region also open for tastings; tell us which you want and we check the distance against the 200 km allowance.
Is a shopping day with a driver worth it?
It is if you buy more than fits in your hands. Your bags stay locked in the car while you move on, and the driver knows where to stop without a parking ticket.
- Green Bazaar — spices, dried fruit, nuts and honey, vacuum-packed for flights on request.
- Malls — Esentai Mall for international luxury brands, Dostyk Plaza and MEGA Alma-Ata for everything else.
- Kazakh design — felt, cashmere, silver and contemporary brands in small boutiques around Panfilov and Kabanbay Batyr streets.
- Barakholka — the vast bazaar on the north-western edge of the city; go early, keep valuables close, and let the driver point you to the right section.
A shopping day rarely exceeds 60 km, so the sedan rate covers it with room to add Kok-Tobe at the end.
Why hire a driver instead of using Yandex Go or renting a car?
Yandex Go and inDrive are fine for point-to-point rides inside the city. They are less good when you want a car to wait at Medeu for two hours, when your luggage needs to stay somewhere safe, or when you need someone to explain a menu, a park ticket office or a police checkpoint in Russian. Rush hours on Al-Farabi and Abay avenues (roughly 8–10 and 17–20) can turn a 20-minute crossing into an hour, and central parking is paid by app.
Renting yourself means a deposit, Russian- and Kazakh-only road signs outside the centre, and mountain roads that ice over from November to March. With a driver for the day, the price is fixed in advance and you spend the day looking out of the window.
Which car should I choose?
A sedan is right for one to three people in the city. A minivan takes six with luggage, prams or ski bags and is the easy choice for families. Pick the 4x4 from November to March if the day includes the mountains, or for unpaved stretches further out. A Sprinter moves up to 16 people as one group; it handles Medeu but is not the car for steep, narrow side roads. For executives, delegations or weddings, see our chauffeur service with Mercedes E-Class, V-Class and Land Cruiser 300. If your plans stretch beyond the city, a multi-day private driver or the fixed-price Charyn Canyon trip will be better value than a day rate plus extra kilometres.

Questions
How much does a private driver in Almaty cost per day?
$160 for a sedan for 8 hours and 200 km, with an English-speaking driver, fuel and parking included. A minivan for six is $200, a Land Cruiser-class 4x4 is $250 and a 16-seat Sprinter is $330. The price is for the whole car. Extra hours or kilometres are quoted before you book.
Does the driver speak English?
Yes, every booking comes with an English-speaking driver at no extra cost. Expect good conversational English rather than a professional guide's commentary. If you want in-depth history, a hike leader or interpreting at a meeting, add a local guide from $100 a day; the guide rides in the same car.
Can I go to Big Almaty Lake with a private driver?
Yes, but the last part is on foot. Since August 2025 the national park has closed the upper road to private vehicles, so your driver drops you at the checkpoint and waits. The lake is about 30 km from the city at roughly 2,500 m. Rules change, so we confirm access the day before.
Can we drive to Shymbulak ski resort?
Not by car until 30 November 2026: the Medeu–Shymbulak road is restricted to service vehicles during engineering works. Your driver takes you to Medeu, about 15 km from the centre, and you ride the gondola up while he waits. Check the access rules again once the ski season opens in December.
Can a driver take us to a winery near Almaty?
Yes. Arba Wine in the Assa valley is about 1.5 hours east of the city; its tasting of six reserve wines takes 45–90 minutes and needs booking in advance. Combined with the Turgen waterfalls it fits a standard 8-hour day. Your driver does not drink, so everyone in the car can taste.
Do I need to pay in advance?
30% by card link when you book; the rest goes to the driver at the end of the day by card or in cash, USD or tenge. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. You get the driver's name, phone number and plate the evening before.
