Almaty airport transfer to your hotel

Almaty airport (ALA) is about 18 km and 25–40 minutes from most city hotels, and a private transfer costs from $40 for the whole car, with an English-speaking driver included. Your driver tracks the flight, waits in arrivals with your name on a sign and gives you 90 minutes free after landing, so passport control, a slow baggage belt or a SIM-card queue are not your problem. The price is fixed per car to any address in Almaty and you pay the driver at the end, by card or cash.

Which terminal will I land at, and where does the driver wait?

Almaty has two passenger terminals a short walk apart. Terminal 2, opened in June 2024, handles all international flights: Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Seoul, Delhi, Beijing, Bishkek, Tashkent. Terminal 1 is the original building and now handles domestic flights only, for example from Astana, Shymkent or Aktau. The two are not connected airside, which matters if you are connecting from an international to a domestic flight.

Your driver stands at the exit from the arrivals hall of whichever terminal your flight uses, holding a sign with your name. The evening before, you receive the driver's name, phone number, car model and plate on WhatsApp. If you cannot see the sign, message the driver or us; do not follow anyone who simply says your name without showing the sign, because people do read names off other signs.

What happens if my flight is late or immigration is slow?

The driver follows your flight number, so the pickup moves with the actual landing time. The 90 free minutes start when the wheels touch down, not at the scheduled time. That is usually enough: T2 has around 20 passport booths plus a few e-gates, and a normal arrival takes 20–40 minutes, but when two or three wide-body flights from the Gulf land together the queue can stretch towards an hour. Lost-luggage desks are the other time sink. If you are still inside after 80 minutes, send a WhatsApp message and we will hold the car.

Most travellers from the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the Gulf enter Kazakhstan visa-free for a limited stay, but rules change: check yours before you fly.

How long is the drive to my hotel?

The airport sits on the north-eastern edge of the city. The driver leaves via Mailin Street and then takes either Suyunbay and Raiymbek avenues into the old centre, or the eastern ring road (VOAD) when you are staying south, around Al-Farabi Avenue. There are no tolls inside the city. Traffic is the only variable: weekday mornings 8:00–10:00 and evenings 17:30–19:30 are slow, and the first snow day each winter is chaos.

Going straight up to the slopes in winter? Book the dedicated Almaty airport to Shymbulak transfer, where the driver knows the gondola and road rules for the season.

Is a pre-booked car worth it compared with Yandex Go?

On a quiet afternoon with a local SIM and one small bag, Yandex Go is cheaper: typically 2,000–4,000 ₸ ($4–8) to the centre in 2026. The case for a booked car is everything around the fare. You land without a working Kazakh data plan, the app's pickup pin in front of T2 is confusing, fares jump when several long-haul flights arrive together or it snows, and app drivers rarely speak English or help with three suitcases and a ski bag. A booked car removes each of those: the price is known before you board in Dubai or Frankfurt, the driver is at the door, and an English-speaking driver is included, not an extra.

For families, the free child seat matters too: app cars almost never have one. And if you are four or more with luggage, one minivan at $60 beats two taxis that may not leave together.

Arriving at night: what changes?

A large share of Almaty's international arrivals land between midnight and 5:00, from Dubai, Doha, Istanbul and Delhi. At that hour day buses have stopped, only night bus 3 runs roughly hourly, and taxi touts are at their most persistent. The night supplement is $10 per car for pickups between 23:00 and 06:00, so a sedan is $50 in total. The upside is speed: empty roads mean 20–25 minutes to most central hotels. Many Almaty hotels will let you check in at 3:00 if you warn them, so tell reception your flight number when you book.

Money, SIM card and first hours in Almaty

You do not need tenge for the transfer: pay the driver at the end by card or in cash, in US dollars or tenge. If you want local cash, use a bank ATM in the arrivals hall rather than the exchange counters, whose rates are weaker than in town. Beeline, Kcell and Tele2 have SIM kiosks in the terminal; an eSIM bought before departure saves the queue. Download 2GIS, the navigation app locals actually use, which works well offline.

How do I book, and what is the cancellation policy?

Send your flight number, date, the number of guests and bags (mention skis, golf bags or a pram), and your hotel name on WhatsApp at +996 777 889 992, or use the request form. We reply within about 15 minutes between 8:00 and 23:00 Almaty time and confirm the car class and the fixed price. No deposit is needed for transfers, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. Your ride is driven by a licensed, vetted driver in a car under about six years old, with air conditioning and bottled water. For the drive back, allow 3 hours before an international departure from T2: there is a security check at the terminal entrance and passport queues build up before the early-morning bank of flights.

Questions

How much is a private transfer from Almaty airport to the city centre?

$40 for a sedan for up to 3 guests, per car, to any hotel in Almaty. A minivan for up to 6 is $60, a Land Cruiser Prado-class 4x4 $90 and a 16-seat Mercedes Sprinter $120. Pickups between 23:00 and 06:00 add $10. Fuel, parking, 90 minutes of waiting and an English-speaking driver are included.

How long does it take from Almaty airport to the city?

25–40 minutes to most central hotels, a distance of about 18 km. At weekday rush hours, 8:00–10:00 and 17:30–19:30, allow up to an hour. Hotels on Al-Farabi Avenue take 30–50 minutes, and Medeu, the base of the Shymbulak gondola, about 45–60 minutes. At night most rides take only 20–25 minutes.

Where will my driver meet me at Almaty airport?

At the exit of the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name. International flights arrive at Terminal 2, opened in 2024; domestic flights arrive at Terminal 1. You receive the driver's name, phone number and car plate on WhatsApp the evening before, so you can message the driver directly if you do not see each other straight away.

What if my flight to Almaty is delayed?

Nothing changes: 90 free minutes count from the actual landing time, because the driver tracks your flight number. A two-hour delay costs you nothing extra. If immigration or lost luggage keeps you inside longer than about 80 minutes after landing, send us a WhatsApp message and we will keep the car waiting.

Can I pay for the Almaty airport transfer by card?

Yes. You pay the driver at the end of the ride by card or in cash, in US dollars or tenge. Transfers need no deposit, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. The price is fixed per car when you book, so there are no surcharges for luggage, waiting within 90 minutes or parking.

Do you provide child seats for the airport transfer?

Yes, free of charge. Ask when you book and give the children's ages: infant, child and booster seats are available on request. Ride-hailing cars in Almaty almost never carry one. For families of 4–6 with luggage, the $60 minivan is usually the better fit than a sedan.
