Medeu and Shymbulak half-day by private car
Medeu is 15 km and about 35 minutes from central Almaty, and the gondola from there lifts you to Shymbulak and on to the Talgar Pass at roughly 3,200 m; a private half-day costs from $80 for the whole car, return, with an English-speaking driver. Two things most online guides miss in autumn 2026: the famous Medeu ice rink is closed for reconstruction until late 2027, and the road above Medeu is shut to private cars until at least 30 November 2026. So the plan is simple and works well: your driver brings you to the Medeu gondola station, waits, and takes you back down when you are ready.

How does a Medeu and Shymbulak half-day work in 2026?
Your driver collects you from your hotel, usually at 9:00 or 10:00, and drives up Dostyk Avenue and Gornaya Street into the Malaya Almatinka valley. The city ends abruptly; within 20 minutes you are among spruce slopes and dachas, and the road passes the Kazakhfilm studios and the Alma-Arasan turn before the Medeu dam comes into view. The drive to Medeu is about 15 km and 30–35 minutes outside rush hour.
At Medeu (1,690 m) you step out at the lower station of the Medeu – Shymbulak gondola. From there you ride up to the Shymbulak resort base at 2,260 m and continue on two chairlift-gondola combination lifts (Kombi-1 and Kombi-2) to the top station at the Talgar Pass, about 3,200 m. The driver parks at Medeu and waits for you. A comfortable half-day is 4–5 hours door to door: about 1 h 15 min of driving in total, 2.5–3 hours in the mountains and a lunch stop.
Prices per car, return from any Almaty hotel: sedan $80 (up to 3 guests), minivan $100 (up to 6), 4x4 $130 (up to 4), Sprinter $180 (up to 16). Fuel, parking at Medeu and bottled water are included; gondola tickets and lunch are not. You pay the driver at the end, by card or cash in USD or tenge.
Can you drive from Medeu up to Shymbulak?
Not at the moment. From 24 July to 30 November 2026 the Medeu – Tuyuk-Su road above the dam is restricted to emergency vehicles, residents and works machinery while utility networks are replaced. Pedestrians can still walk up, and when the gondola stopped for a few hours in July 2026 the resort ran its own eco-taxis from Medeu to the Shymbulak base.
What happens after 30 November has not been published as of mid-October 2026. In recent ski seasons the city has limited private cars above Medeu and has discussed electric shuttles every 10 minutes and a full car ban at weekends. In practice this changes little for you: Medeu is the gondola's lower station, so the car stops exactly where you need it. We check the rules on the morning of your trip and tell you where the car will stop before you leave the hotel.
If you would rather stay at the resort itself, book an Almaty airport to Shymbulak transfer; ski-day logistics are covered on our Shymbulak ski transfer page.
Is the Medeu ice rink open in winter 2026/27?
No. The open-air rink at Medeu, built in 1972 and famous for its many speed-skating world records at altitude, closed after the 2024/25 season for a full reconstruction. Demolition of the old refrigeration plant began in late October 2025, the complex is behind a construction fence, and the city's construction department gives completion as the fourth quarter of 2027. There will be no public skating at Medeu this winter, whatever older blogs say about a November–March season.
You can still see the bowl from above. In December 2025 visitors were walking up to the viewing area on the mudflow-protection dam above the rink, reached by a long flight of concrete steps that locals call the stairs of health (allow 20–30 minutes and stop often: you are at almost 1,700 m). The dam itself, built after a 1973 mudflow, is the best free viewpoint in the valley. If ice skating is the point of your trip, the rink at Almaty Arena or Halyk Arena in the city is the substitute this season, and your driver can drop you there on the way back.
The redesigned complex is meant to add a heated outdoor pool, a 900 m² terrace on the western stand and a small museum; worth a return visit in 2028.
How much is the gondola from Medeu to Shymbulak and the Talgar Pass?
Shymbulak revised its lift prices in summer 2026. As reported on 28 September 2026, adult fares are:
| Ticket | Adult | Child 6–14 |
|---|---|---|
| Full route Medeu – Shymbulak – Kombi-1 – Kombi-2 (to ≈3,200 m), return | 12,000 ₸ (≈$25) | 4,000 ₸ |
| Full route, one way | 7,000 ₸ | — |
| Kombi-1 + Kombi-2 from Shymbulak base, return | 7,000 ₸ | 3,000 ₸ |
| Full route plus the separate KKD-4 lift | 15,000 ₸ | — |
Children up to and including age 5 ride free every day. During the New Year high season (25 December – 11 January) and in ski season, pedestrian tickets and ski passes follow the resort's seasonal tariff, so check the official site before you go. Tickets are sold at the Medeu and Shymbulak base ticket offices and work on a reusable card.
The Medeu – Shymbulak gondola is about 4.5 km long and takes roughly 15 minutes. Expect the cabin queue at Medeu to reach 30–60 minutes on sunny Saturdays and Sundays; on a weekday morning you usually walk straight on.
What is at the top, and is the Talgar Pass worth it?
Yes, on a clear day. From the top station at about 3,200 m you look south into the glaciers of the Tuyuk-Su valley and north over the whole of Almaty, with the steppe beyond it disappearing into haze. Walkers can follow the ridge a few hundred metres for better angles; do not go further without proper boots, especially from October, when snow and ice reach the pass.
Things to know at the top:
- It is 12–15 °C colder than the city. Take a warm layer even in July.
- 3,200 m is high enough to feel the altitude if you flew in yesterday. Walk slowly and drink water; the driver carries bottled water in the car.
- Clouds tend to build on the peaks after 13:00 in summer. Go up first and have lunch at the Shymbulak base afterwards.
- Toilets are at the gondola stations and in the base area restaurants.
The Shymbulak base has several restaurants and cafés open year round, from quick self-service to proper sit-down places with terraces. There are also cafés near the Medeu gondola station.
When are the lifts closed?
The gondola and chairlifts close for planned maintenance twice a year, usually for about two weeks in late spring and again in autumn before the ski season. In 2024 the Medeu – Shymbulak gondola was shut from 21 October to 3 November. The autumn 2026 dates had not been published when we last checked in mid-October, so if you are in Almaty in the second half of October or early November, message us first and we will confirm.
Short unplanned stops happen too, usually for wind or a technical fault: the gondola stopped for several hours on 16 July 2026, and the resort ran eco-taxis from Medeu. Strong wind at the pass closes the upper lifts more often than the lower gondola.
The ski season usually opens in early to mid-December (6 December in 2025) and runs into March or April. The 2026/27 opening date has not been announced yet.
Best time of day and season for Medeu and Shymbulak
- Morning (9:00–12:00) is best for the Talgar Pass: clearer air, sharp light on the glaciers to the south, fewer people.
- September and early October bring yellow birch and aspen in the valley and stable weather; this is the best photography month.
- June to August is green and busy; leave the hotel by 9:00 to beat the weekend queue.
- December to March is ski season: the gondola fills with skiers, and the road up Gornaya Street can be slow after snowfall. Our cars run on winter tyres; a 4x4 is the calm choice on snow days.
Friday evenings and weekend afternoons add 20–40 minutes on Gornaya Street coming down. Weekdays are noticeably quieter on the road and on the lifts.
How to combine Medeu and Shymbulak with the rest of Almaty
The half-day leaves the afternoon free. Popular pairings: Kok-Tobe hill and the Green Bazaar on the same day, or Big Almaty Lake the next morning for a second, very different mountain view. If you want the car for the whole day with several stops, a private driver in Almaty by the day is often better value. Longer trips out of the city, such as Turgen gorge or Charyn Canyon, are full-day trips. All our fixed prices are on the prices page.

How high is the Talgar Pass and how do you get there?
