Can a car drive all the way to Shymbulak in 2026/27?

Short answer: plan on no. Three things stack up this season, and we would rather you hear them from us than from a checkpoint guard at 1,700 m.

• 24 July – 30 November 2026: the Medeu – Tuyuk-Su road is restricted for utility upgrades. Only emergency vehicles, residents and works machinery pass (Almaty tourism office notice, July 2026).
• The new entry rule: on 18 September 2026 Almaty's city council (maslikhat) backed a decision restricting entry above Medeu for cars with combustion engines. Electric cars would be allowed on weekdays only; on weekends and public holidays nobody drives up except services and residents. As of October 2026 the effective date and any exemption for hotel guests have not been published — we check before every booking.
• Gondola maintenance: the Medeu – Shymbulak gondola (M1) is scheduled to be closed for servicing from 19 October to 1 November 2026. Arriving in those two weeks means the resort is reachable only on foot.

The cars we use are petrol and hybrid sedans, minivans and Land Cruisers, so the realistic plan is a drop-off at the lower gondola station at Medeu. If the rules change in your favour by the time you land, your driver will go as far as the checkpoint allows at no extra charge.

How much is a private transfer from Almaty airport to Shymbulak?

Prices are fixed, per car, one way, and include fuel, parking, a meet-and-greet with a name sign and 90 minutes of free waiting after landing:

What is the route from the airport to Medeu and Shymbulak?

The airport sits in the north-east of the city, so the drive crosses Almaty diagonally towards the mountains. Above Al-Farabi Avenue Gornaya Street climbs steadily past the Medeu dam; it is cleared and gritted, but shaded corners stay icy until midday after a snowfall. Our cars run on winter tyres from November. Friday evenings and Saturday mornings bring city skiers and a 20–40 minute queue on Gornaya — if your flight lands then, book the 4x4 or minivan and do not plan a first run before lunch.

What happens at Medeu with skis and suitcases?

The car parks at the drop-off area next to the lower gondola station. Your driver unloads, carries the bags to the station entrance and waits until you are through the turnstile. Two practical notes from repeated trips:

• Ski bags and normal suitcases go up in the cabins with you; very large hard cases are easier outside the morning peak.
• Buy the gondola ticket at the station or online on shymbulak.com. If you are staying on the mountain, ask your hotel in advance whether they can meet you at the upper station.

The city is planning electric shuttles every 10 minutes between Medeu and Shymbulak, but as of October 2026 this is a proposal with no start date. We will tell you the moment it runs.

Where do skiers stay at Shymbulak, and what if I land at night?

At the resort itself the main options are the Shymbulak Resort Hotel next to the base area, and chalets and apartments around the first lift level; Tenir Eco Hotel is a resort-style choice on the mountain. There is no InterContinental at Shymbulak — the InterContinental Almaty is in the city centre, about 40 minutes from Medeu, and many guests base themselves there and do day trips.

Night arrivals are common: many long-haul flights from Europe and the Gulf land between 01:00 and 05:00. The gondola does not run at night, so the sensible plan is a city hotel for the first night (airport to Almaty transfer from the same driver) and a morning ride to Medeu with our Shymbulak ski transfer. If your mountain hotel has a confirmed vehicle pass, tell us and we will plan around it.

Which car do I need for ski and snowboard bags?

• Sedan — two people with skis in soft bags fit with the rear seat folded; three people with gear is tight.
• Minivan — the default for families and groups up to 6: boots, skis and suitcases ride inside.
• 4x4 — for heavy snow days and if you will use the car for Oi-Qaragai or Ak-Bulak later in the week.
• Sprinter — ski clubs and corporate groups of 10–16 with a full gear load.

Tell us on WhatsApp how many pairs of skis, boards and suitcases you have, and we size the car so nothing goes on the roof. Child seats are free on request.

When does the 2026/27 season start and what do lift tickets cost?

Shymbulak usually opens between late November and mid-December, depending on snow: in 2025 the winter season opened on 6 December. The 2026/27 date has not been announced as of October 2026 and may also depend on the road works finishing on 30 November. For reference, the 2025/26 adult full-day ski pass was 12,000 KZT (about $25) and a half day 9,000 KZT, with children at roughly half price; 2026/27 tariffs are not yet published. Gear rental ran about 8,000–10,000 KZT a day. Prices on weekends and holidays can be higher — check the resort's site before you fly.
