What is included in the Mangystau 3-day tour price?

The price is $1,350 for the car, not per person: one late-model Toyota Land Cruiser (Prado or 300 series) and one licensed driver who speaks English and knows the desert tracks, for three full days. With three guests that is $450 each; with four, about $340. The car is a 4x4 only, because a large share of the mileage is on dirt and takyr.

Booking takes a 30% deposit online by Visa or Mastercard; the balance is paid to your driver at the end, by card or in cash (USD or KZT). Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. If rain makes the clay tracks unsafe, we reorder the days or move the date rather than send you into mud.

What is the day-by-day route?

The order below is the one that works best in dry weather. Your driver may swap days one and two if the forecast favours it; nothing is lost either way.

Day 1 — the north: Sultan-Epe, Sherkala, Valley of Castles, Torysh (≈450 km)

Leave Aktau at 7:00 and drive north towards Tauchik. Sultan-Epe, about 150 km from Aktau and 57 km east of Fort-Shevchenko, is an underground mosque of eleven small chambers in a green canyon, with a necropolis around it; the passages are low enough that you stoop. Then east to the Shetpe area for Sherkala, a 322 m lone mesa that looks like a yurt from one side and a crouching lion from another, with the ruins of the 12th-century Silk Road town of Kyzylkala about 4 km away. Ten kilometres east is Airakty, the Valley of Castles, chalk and limestone walls that Taras Shevchenko sketched in 1851. Late afternoon at Torysh, the field of stone balls, when the low light makes the spheres cast long shadows. Back on the paved A-33 to Aktau by about 20:00.

Day 2 — the south-east: Shopan-Ata, Beket-Ata, Bozzhyra (≈380 km)

150 km of asphalt to Zhanaozen, then past Kyzylsai onto the plateau. Pilgrims stop first at Shopan-Ata, a cave mosque and a vast old necropolis; Beket-Ata lies about 70 km further, roughly 280 km and five hours from Aktau. Afternoon on the tracks to the rim of the Ustyurt escarpment, sunset over Bozzhyra, and the night in a yurt camp near the valley.

Day 3 — Bozzhyra sunrise, Tuzbair, back to Aktau (≈330 km)

Sunrise on the cliff edge above the white 'fangs', then down to the valley floor. Mid-morning at Tuzbair, a salt flat about 15 km long under the Western Chink of the Ustyurt, with eroded white cliffs above a glittering crust. Back via Zhanaozen to Aktau or straight to the airport for an evening flight (arrival around 17:00–18:00).

Do you really need a Land Cruiser in Mangystau?

Yes. Only the main roads between Aktau, Fort-Shevchenko, Shetpe, Zhetybai and Zhanaozen are paved. Torysh, the Valley of Castles, the last stretch to Beket-Ata, Bozzhyra and Tuzbair are reached on unmarked dirt tracks and takyr, flat dried clay that is as hard as concrete when dry and becomes a skating rink after rain. Sedans and crossovers get stuck every season, and a recovery from the Ustyurt plateau takes many hours.

Mobile signal disappears for long stretches east of Zhanaozen and around Torysh, and fuel is sold only in towns, so the driver fills up in Zhanaozen and Shetpe and carries water, a shovel, a compressor and a tow strap. He also decides when a descent or a cliff-edge approach is unsafe; in strong wind he will park well back from the edge at Bozzhyra, and you should not argue with that.

Where do you sleep, and what are the yurt camps like?

Night 1 is in Aktau, which has everything from business hotels to a five-star beachfront resort; staying in town means a proper shower before the desert. Night 2 is in a yurt camp near Bozzhyra. Camps are simple: felt yurts with mattresses and blankets, a dining yurt, dinner and breakfast, dry toilets, limited solar power and sometimes a basic shower. Prices change every season, so we quote the current camp rate when you book and can reserve it for you at cost; in May and September camps fill weeks ahead.

If you prefer, the pilgrims' house at Beket-Ata offers basic beds and meals for a donation, or you can tent on the plateau (there is a small per-person tent fee in the protected area). Your driver's bed and meals are already in our price wherever you sleep. A new visitor centre with glamping yurts at Bozzhyra was under construction in 2025–2026; check its status for your dates.

Are there entry fees at Bozzhyra and Tuzbair?

From 1 September 2026 Bozzhyra, Tuzbair, Kyzylkup and the Bokty mountains are paid areas under the Kyzylsai regional natural park. Published 2026 rates are tied to the MRP and include about 865 KZT per person per day for the tourist route, 3,028 KZT per car and 433 KZT per person for a night in a tent; personal photography is free. Reports state that foreign visitors pay double. In practice that is under $20–25 for a car of four foreigners for the whole trip. Pay in advance in a Kazakh banking app (search 'Kyzylsai') or on site, and keep the receipt for rangers. Fees are not in our price; your driver will help you pay.

Beket-Ata and the other mosques are pilgrimage sites, not ticketed attractions; a donation is customary.

How should you behave at Beket-Ata and the underground mosques?

Beket-Ata (1750–1813) was a Sufi teacher, and his underground mosque is the most important pilgrimage site in western Kazakhstan; in 2024 the region's cave mosques were added to UNESCO's Tentative List. Dress modestly: long trousers for men, shoulders and knees covered and a headscarf for women. No photography inside. When you leave the graves, do not turn your back on them. The walk down to the mosque and back up is steep and takes about 40 minutes in total, now on a path with benches and shade shelters. Pilgrims share food on a communal dastarkhan; bringing some bread or sweets to share is appreciated.

When is the best time to go to Mangystau?

Mid-April to early June is the prime window: mild days, green-tinged steppe and clear light. Mid-September to October is almost as good, drier and more stable. July and August regularly reach +40–45 °C with no shade, so days start at dawn and midday is spent in the car or a mosque. November to March is cold and very windy, and rain or snowmelt can close the clay tracks for days; keep a buffer day if you travel then. Light is best in the first and last two hours of the day, which is why the route puts Torysh in the late afternoon and Bozzhyra at sunset and sunrise.

Shorter options and getting to Aktau

If you have one day, the Torysh, Sherkala and Valley of Castles day trip covers the north for $330 per Land Cruiser, and the Bozzhyra day trip runs $420 per car but means 12–14 hours on the road with no sunrise. Arriving by air, your driver can start at the terminal; otherwise book a simple Aktau airport transfer. Fitting Mangystau into a longer trip? See our Kazakhstan itinerary guide and the Aktau hub.

Questions

How much is a 3-day Mangystau tour by private 4x4?

$1,350 for the whole Toyota Land Cruiser for three days, for up to 4 guests, so $340–450 per person. That covers the English-speaking driver, all fuel for about 1,100 km and the driver's own lodging and meals. Your hotel, yurt camp, meals and park fees are extra. A 30% deposit by Visa or Mastercard secures the date.

What can you see in Mangystau in 3 days?

About ten highlights: Sultan-Epe, Sherkala and the Kyzylkala ruins, the Valley of Castles, Torysh stone balls, the underground mosques of Shopan-Ata and Beket-Ata, Bozzhyra at sunset and sunrise, and the Tuzbair salt flat. Two long driving days of 10–12 hours are unavoidable because the sites are hundreds of kilometres apart.

How far is Bozzhyra from Aktau?

Roughly 300 km, about 5–6 hours each way: 150 km of paved road to Zhanaozen, then dirt tracks and clay pans onto the Ustyurt plateau. That is why the 3-day route sleeps in a yurt camp near the valley, so you get sunset and sunrise there without a 3 a.m. start from Aktau.

Is there an entry fee for Bozzhyra in 2026?

Yes, since 1 September 2026. Published rates are about 865 KZT per person per day plus 3,028 KZT per car, with foreigners reported to pay double, so a car of four foreigners pays roughly $20–25. Pay online via a Kazakh banking app ('Kyzylsai') or on site. Fees are not included in the tour price.

Can I do Mangystau without a 4x4?

Only partly. About 150 km to Zhanaozen and the roads to Fort-Shevchenko and Shetpe are paved, but Torysh, the Valley of Castles, Beket-Ata's final stretch, Bozzhyra and Tuzbair are on dirt and clay that turns to mud after rain. We run this route only in Land Cruisers.

Is the driver a guide?

Your driver speaks English, knows every track and stop, and will explain the basics, but he is not a licensed guide. For geology, history and the Sufi traditions behind the mosques, add a local guide from $100 per day; they ride in the same car, so keep one seat free.
