Which road from Almaty to Karakol: Kegen or Korday?

There are two honest answers to "how far is Karakol", and the difference is three to four hours.

RouteKmHoursWhen it works
Kegen–Karkara (east)≈4207–8Daylight only; historically mid-May to October
Korday–Bishkek–Balykchy (west)≈63510–11Every day, 24 hours, all year

Kegen runs east through Shelek, climbs to the Kegen plateau, crosses in the Karkara valley and reaches the lake at Tyup, about 40 km before Karakol. It is shorter, emptier and far more beautiful, and you can add a Charyn Canyon viewpoint. But the post works in daylight only, it is not on the official list of entry points for the Kyrgyz e-visa, and as of 13 October 2026 no schedule for winter 2026/27 had been published.

Korday goes west to the main border, around Bishkek, up the Boom gorge and along the whole north shore of Issyk-Kul. It is longer and busier, but never closes. In winter, for late arrivals, or if you hold an e-visa, it is the only sensible choice. The price is the same either way.

What is the Kegen–Karkara crossing like for foreigners?

A small rural post with a fraction of Korday's traffic. You get out with your passport, pass Kazakh exit control, walk to the Kyrgyz booth and get your entry stamp; the driver takes the car and bags through and you rejoin him a few hundred metres on. On a quiet summer day the whole thing takes 20–40 minutes.

Full status and history: Kegen–Karkara border.

What will I see on the Kegen road?

The first two hours are flat orchard country and steppe through Shelek. After that the road climbs, and around 195 km from Almaty there is a turn-off to the Charyn Canyon rim: a 40–60 minute photo stop if you left at 6:00. Kegen sits on an open plateau at roughly 1,800–2,000 m with the Tian Shan ahead of you; it has the last proper café and toilets before the border, so lunch is here. Beyond, the Karkara valley is summer pasture with yurts and horse herds. Expect around 15 km of gravel before the post and no mobile signal for about an hour. On the Kyrgyz side a paved road runs down to Tyup and the lake.

If you want Charyn, Kolsai lakes and Kaindy properly rather than in passing, book the two-day Almaty to Karakol via Charyn and Kolsai instead.

What is the Korday road to Karakol like?

The long road is the reliable one. Almaty to the Korday border is about 230 km and 3–3.5 hours; the crossing is open 24 hours and usually takes 20–60 minutes, though Friday and Sunday evenings in July and August can mean 2–3 hours. Then the Bishkek ring road, the Boom gorge (narrow, lorries, speed cameras, sometimes icy at dawn in winter), and Balykchy at the western tip of the lake. The last 200 km follow the north shore through Cholpon-Ata, a natural place for a late lunch. See the Korday border guide for queue patterns.

Leave Almaty by 7:00 to reach Karakol before dark. In winter our drivers do not drive the Boom gorge at night in snow; a late start is turned into an overnight in Bishkek or Cholpon-Ata rather than a midnight run.

Can I get from Almaty to Karakol in winter?

Yes, via Korday. The Kegen crossing has historically closed for winter, and we will only route through it if its winter regime is officially confirmed. Winter cars run on winter tyres and carry chains; the lake-level road is rarely snowy, but the Korday pass and the Boom gorge can be icy. Karakol in winter means skiing at the Karakol ski base, 7 km above town; for ski bags, early starts and resort logistics see Karakol skiing from Almaty.

Asman Airlines flew Almaty–Karakol on Fridays and Sundays in winter 2025/26; flights are sometimes cancelled in bad weather, and a 2026/27 schedule had not been announced by mid-October 2026.

Which car should I book, and how do I pay?

Fixed price per car, one way, whichever road we take: $280 sedan (Toyota Camry or similar, up to 3 guests), $320 minivan (Hyundai Staria or similar, up to 6), $340 4x4 (Land Cruiser Prado class, up to 4) and $460 Mercedes Sprinter (up to 16). On the Kegen gravel a sedan is fine in dry summer weather; the 4x4 is worth it in shoulder season or if you will continue into gorges like Jeti-Oguz or Altyn-Arashan. You pay the driver at the end by card or in cash (USD or KZT), and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Prices for other routes: price list.

Questions

How much is a taxi from Almaty to Karakol?

$280 for a sedan with up to three guests, per car and one way. A minivan for six is $320, a 4x4 $340 and a 16-seat Sprinter $460. The price is the same whether we drive via Kegen or Korday, and includes fuel, border waiting and an English-speaking driver. You pay at the end.

How long does it take from Almaty to Karakol by car?

7–8 hours for about 420 km through the Kegen–Karkara crossing, which works in daylight and, historically, from mid-May to October. Otherwise it is about 635 km and 10–11 hours through Korday and Bishkek, open year-round. A Charyn Canyon viewpoint adds about an hour on the Kegen road.

Is the Kegen border open in winter?

13 October 2026 is our latest check, and no official winter 2026/27 schedule had been announced by then. The crossing has historically closed in winter and worked only in daylight. A 24-hour regime was ratified in Kazakhstan's lower house in January 2026, with no start date. We confirm before every booking.

Can I cross Kegen–Karkara on a Kyrgyz e-visa?

2 sources conflict: the official Kyrgyz e-visa list of entry points does not include Karkyra, while a September 2026 travel blog reports e-visa holders crossing there. Most Western passports need no visa at all. If you rely on an e-visa, we route you through Korday, where it is definitely accepted.

Is there a flight from Almaty to Karakol?

35 minutes on Asman Airlines, which flew Almaty–Karakol on Fridays and Sundays in winter 2025/26, from 6,500 som. A 2026/27 schedule had not been announced by mid-October 2026. Flights are weather-dependent, so many skiers book a car as the main plan or as backup.

Can we stop at Charyn Canyon on the way to Karakol?

Yes, on the Kegen road the Charyn rim is about 195 km from Almaty and a 40–60 minute stop fits within the included stop time. Leave by 6:00 to reach the border comfortably. For Kolsai lakes and Kaindy as well, take the two-day trip via Charyn and Kolsai.
