How do I get from Almaty to Shymbulak in 2026/27?
In practice, every visitor now arrives the same way: by car or bus to Medeu (the 1949 ice rink at ≈1,690 m), then by the M1 gondola to the Shymbulak base. The rules behind that:
- Until 30 November 2026 the Medeu – Tuyuk-Su road is closed to private traffic for utility upgrades; only emergency services, residents and works vehicles pass.
- After that, Almaty's city council voted on 18 September 2026 to restrict cars with combustion engines above Medeu. Electric cars would be allowed on weekdays; on weekends and public holidays all vehicles except services and residents stay below. As of October 2026 the akim's signature and the start date were not public, nor were rules for hotel guests or taxis.
- A shuttle — electric buses every 10 minutes along the 7.5 km road — is under discussion, with the city aiming to decide on the buses by year-end. Do not count on it this winter.
The cars we use are petrol and hybrid, so we plan every ski trip around the gondola. If the road opens to your car on your date, the driver goes as far as the checkpoint allows at the same price.
How much is a private car to Shymbulak?

| 4x4, Land Cruiser Prado / 300 | up to 4 | $100 |

How does a ski day with a driver work?
- Pickup 8:00–8:30 at your hotel. Leaving before 9:00 beats the weekend queue on Gornaya Street, which can add 30–40 minutes on Saturday mornings.
- Medeu, around 9:00. The driver unloads at the lower gondola station and helps carry skis to the entrance.
- On the mountain. You ride the gondola (about 15 minutes, ≈4.5 km) to the base at ≈2,260 m, then chairlifts towards Talgar Pass at ≈3,200 m.
- Pickup. Send the driver a WhatsApp when you start down. The gondola descent and walk to the car take 25–30 minutes, so the car is warm when you arrive.
If you want to add a city stop on the way back — a dinner reservation, the Green Bazaar, a shop for gloves — tell us in advance. For full-day hire around the city on non-ski days, see the private driver in Almaty.
When does Shymbulak open, and what does a ski pass cost?
The season usually runs from early December to April, snow permitting; in 2025 Shymbulak opened its winter season on 6 December. The 2026/27 opening date was not announced as of October 2026. Before the season, the lifts close for servicing: in 2026 the M1 gondola and combi-lifts K-1 and K-2 are scheduled to be shut from 19 October to 1 November, and the KKD-4 from 12 October.
Ski pass prices for 2026/27 are not yet published. For reference, in the 2025/26 season an adult paid 12,000 KZT (about $25) for a full day and 9,000 KZT for a morning or afternoon session; children paid 3,000–6,000 KZT. A full rental set was 8,000–10,000 KZT a day. Weekend and holiday prices can differ. Always check shymbulak.com before you buy; passes are sold at the resort and online.
Where should I stay: on the mountain or in Almaty?
On the mountain the best-known address is the Shymbulak Resort Hotel beside the base area, plus chalets and apartments by the lower lifts and the Tenir Eco Hotel resort. Ski-in comfort, but with this season's road rules all arrivals and departures go through the gondola, and dinner options are limited to the resort.
In Almaty you get the city's restaurants and hotels such as the InterContinental Almaty, the Ritz-Carlton and the Rixos, 35–50 minutes from the gondola. There is no InterContinental at Shymbulak itself. For most of our guests the city plus a daily car is the more comfortable split, especially with non-skiers in the group who can spend the day at Big Almaty Lake or in the city.
Which car do I need for skis, and is a 4x4 necessary?
Gornaya Street up to Medeu is a paved city road, cleared after snowfall, so a sedan or minivan on winter tyres handles it almost every day. Choose by luggage, not by terrain:
- Sedan — 2 skiers with soft bags; 3 with gear is tight.
- Minivan — families and groups up to 6, skis and boots inside.
- 4x4 — after heavy overnight snow, or if the week includes the steeper approaches to Oi-Qaragai or Ak-Bulak.
- Sprinter — ski clubs and corporate groups of 10–16.

Can I visit Medeu and Shymbulak without skiing?
Yes — the gondola is popular with sightseers year-round, and the upper lifts reach panoramic terraces near Talgar Pass with views over the Zailiysky Alatau. Note that the Medeu ice rink itself is closed for reconstruction, with reopening reported for the end of 2027. Bring sunglasses and sun cream: at 3,000 m the winter sun is strong even when the city is in smog. Mobile signal is good at Medeu and the base, patchy higher up. 25 km and about 45 minutes by car to the Medeu gondola, then 15 minutes in the cabin to the resort base at 2,260 m. As of October 2026 private petrol cars cannot drive above Medeu, so the gondola is the standard route. A private car with RideKZ costs from $50 one way; city bus 12 also runs to Medeu.
Can I drive my own car or a taxi up to Shymbulak?
Not in petrol or diesel cars this season. The road above Medeu is restricted until 30 November 2026 for works, and a city decision backed on 18 September 2026 limits combustion-engine cars, allowing electric cars on weekdays only and no private vehicles on weekends. Rules may change — we confirm them before every trip.

Usually in the first half of December, snow permitting: the 2025/26 season opened on 6 December 2025. The 2026/27 date had not been announced as of October 2026. Before that, the Medeu gondola is scheduled for maintenance from 19 October to 1 November 2026, and the access road works run until 30 November.
Can the driver wait for me while I ski?
Yes. The one-way transfer from Almaty to the Medeu gondola is $50 in a sedan or $70 in a minivan. For a return ski-day, where your driver waits at Medeu and drives you back after skiing, ask us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and we will send a fixed quote within about 15 minutes.
Are there hotels at Shymbulak itself?
Yes, a handful: the Shymbulak Resort Hotel by the base area, chalets and apartments near the lower lifts, and the Tenir Eco Hotel resort. There is no InterContinental on the mountain; the InterContinental Almaty is in the city, about 40 minutes from the gondola. With this season's road rules, mountain-hotel guests arrive via the gondola.
