Private driver for a multi-day Kazakhstan trip

A private car with an English-speaking driver for a multi-day trip in Kazakhstan costs from $180 per day for a sedan, $220 for a minivan, $270 for a Land Cruiser-class 4x4 and $360 for a 16-seat Sprinter — with 250 km a day, fuel, tolls and the driver's own lodging and meals included. The same driver stays with you from the first morning to the last drop-off, typically for 7 to 14 days. You choose and pay for your own hotels and meals; we plan the route, the daily distances and where the driver needs a 4x4. Booking is a 30% deposit online by Visa or Mastercard.

Included: an English-speaking driver for every day of the trip, the car, fuel, tolls, parking, bottled water, child seats on request, and the driver's own room and meals wherever you stay overnight. Each day includes 250 km, and the allowance is pooled across the trip — a 30 km rest day in Saty offsets a 450 km transfer day. Not included: your hotels, your meals, national-park tickets and activities. If your route goes over the total allowance, we tell you the extra cost when we quote, not at the end. For a single day in the city, the Almaty day driver (8 h, 200 km, from $160) is the better fit.

How does a 7–14 day trip with one driver work?

  1. Plan. Send us your dates, number of guests, luggage and the places you want to see on WhatsApp. We reply within about 15 minutes, 8:00–23:00 Almaty time, with a day-by-day draft: kilometres, driving hours, where the road turns to gravel and where you should sleep.
  2. Confirm. You approve the route and the car, then pay a 30% deposit online by Visa or Mastercard through a secure card link. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start.
  3. Meet your driver. The evening before, you get the driver's name, photo, phone and the car's plate. On day one he meets you at the airport with a name sign or at your hotel.
  4. On the road. Each evening you agree the next morning's start time. The driver checks the weather and road conditions, books his own room near yours and handles the Russian-language moments: park ticket offices, police checkpoints, guesthouse owners, menus.
  5. Finish. The balance is paid online by card or to the driver at the end, by card or in cash, USD or tenge.

A practical rhythm we recommend: no more than two long driving days in a row, and a light day after every big transfer. Our drivers are licensed professionals, and the car stays inside Kazakhstan; if your route continues to Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan, we arrange a handover at the border and a second driver meets you on the other side.

Sample route: 7 days around Almaty (≈1,300 km)

The classic first trip, with no domestic flights and almost all of it on asphalt except Kaindy and Altyn-Emel.

DayRouteApprox. km
1Airport pickup, Almaty city, Kok-Tobe60
2Medeu, gondola to Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake checkpoint90

5Saty → Zharkent → Basshi (Altyn-Emel)350
6Singing Dune and Aktau mountains → Almaty350
7Tamgaly petroglyphs or free morning, airport100

Total about 1,330 km against an allowance of 1,750, so no extra charge. In a 4x4 for four guests this is 7 × $270 = $1,890. If you prefer a fixed package, our 5-day Almaty tour covers days 2–6 from $1,100 per minivan. The Altyn-Emel dirt section and Kaindy's last stretch are where a 4x4 pays for itself; in a minivan you switch to the park's vehicle or a local 4x4 for those kilometres.

Sample route: 10–14 days, Almaty to the Silk Road

For a longer trip the driver can take you west along the old Silk Road instead of flying.

That is roughly 2,700–2,900 km over 12 days, inside the 3,000 km allowance. Because the trip ends far from Almaty, we include the driver's return run in the quote. The Silk Road leg alone is also available as the 3-day Silk Road tour from Shymkent. Want Kyrgyzstan too? The 7-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan road trip loops through Kolsai, Karakol and Issyk-Kul with one car cleared for both countries.

Which car should I choose for a long trip?

For desert trips on the Caspian side, start with our 3-day Mangystau 4x4 tour from Aktau, and fly there from Almaty in about 3.5 hours.

Can I add an English-speaking guide?

Yes, for $100 per day. Your driver speaks conversational English and will help with tickets, menus and logistics, but he is a driver, not a historian. A licensed guide rides in the same car and walks with you into the Yassawi mausoleum, the Central State Museum or the petroglyph sites at Tamgaly, and explains what you are looking at. Many guests book the guide only for the culture-heavy days — two days in Almaty and two in Turkestan — and go without on the hiking and driving days. Guide lodging on overnight stops is quoted with the trip. For Almaty only, see the driver and guide day in Almaty.

Questions

How much is a private driver in Kazakhstan per day?

$180 a day for a sedan, $220 for a minivan, $270 for a Land Cruiser-class 4x4 and $360 for a 16-seat Sprinter on multi-day trips. Each day includes 250 km, fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own room and meals. Your hotels, meals and park tickets are paid separately.

Do I pay for the driver's hotel and food?

No — the driver's lodging and meals are already in the daily rate, wherever you stop for the night. You do not need to book him a room or buy his lunch. You only pay for your own hotels, meals, park entries and activities. If you add a guide, the guide's overnight costs are quoted with the trip.

What happens if we drive more than 250 km a day?

250 km a day is pooled across the whole trip, so a short day offsets a long one: a 7-day trip includes 1,750 km. Typical 7-day Almaty-region routes come in around 1,300 km. If your plan goes over, we show the extra cost in the quote before you pay anything.

Can the same driver take us to Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan?

No — this car works inside Kazakhstan only. For Kyrgyzstan we either arrange a handover at the border, where a second driver meets you, or you book the 7-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan loop with one cross-border car. For Tashkent, you walk through the Kaplanbek crossing and a second driver meets you on the Uzbek side.

How do I pay for a multi-day driver?

30% deposit online by Visa or Mastercard through a secure card link once you approve the route. The balance can be paid online before the trip or to the driver at the end by card or in cash, USD or tenge. You do not need Kaspi or a Kazakh bank account. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead.

Can I hire a guide as well as a driver?

$100 a day adds a licensed English-speaking guide who travels in the same car. It is worth it in Almaty's museums, at Tamgaly and in Turkestan and Otrar; on hiking and long driving days most guests skip the guide. You can mix days with and without a guide on one trip.
