How to get from Astana airport to the city

Astana airport (NQZ) is about 17 km and 25–35 minutes by car from Baiterek, and you have five ways into town: the new LRT light rail for 200 ₸, city buses 10 and 12 for about 110 ₸, Yandex Go or inDrive for roughly 4,000 ₸ ($8) on a calm day, a pre-booked taxi firm, or a private transfer with an English-speaking driver from $45 per car. The big change in 2026 is the light rail: since 16 May a driverless line runs from the airport through the government district to Nurly Zhol station. Below is what each option really costs as of October 2026, which one suits which traveller, and how Astana's winter changes the answer.

What is Astana airport like on arrival?

Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (code NQZ, sometimes still shown as TSE) sits on the south-eastern edge of the capital, on the road to Karaganda. It is Kazakhstan's second airport after Almaty and Air Astana's growing transfer hub, with direct flights to Europe, the Gulf, Turkey, China, Korea and India. There are two terminals: Terminal 1 (2017) for international flights and Terminal 2 (2005, the swooping building by Kisho Kurokawa) for domestic flights. An indoor gallery links them, so connections never take you outside.

In arrivals you will find ATMs (use a bank ATM and decline the home-currency conversion), mobile operator desks for a local SIM, cafés and free Wi-Fi. Priority Pass holders can use the Sapar lounges in both terminals. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Astana, including on buses and the light rail, but keep a few thousand tenge in cash for kiosks.

Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the Gulf states and many other countries currently enter Kazakhstan visa-free for short stays; India and China have their own arrangements. Rules change, so check the current list for your passport before you fly.

Does the LRT light rail go from Astana airport to the city centre?

Yes, and it is the biggest change to this journey in twenty years. After a construction saga that started in 2011, Astana's driverless light rail opened to passengers on 16 May 2026 and carried about a million riders in its first two weeks. The first line runs 22.4 km with 18 stations, from Airport through Mangilik El, Astana Arena, Baiterek, House of Ministries and National Museum to Nurly Zhol railway station. Trains run roughly every 5–6 minutes from about 06:00 to 23:00, the end-to-end ride takes around 40 minutes, and a single trip costs 200 ₸ (about $0.40).

Who it suits: light travellers heading to the government district, someone catching an intercity train at Nurly Zhol, and anyone who likes seeing a city from an elevated track. Who it does not: most hotels are not at a station door, stations have no shops or cafés (only vending machines), and walking even 600 metres with suitcases on an icy pavement at −25 °C is no fun. Payment options and exact station exits were still bedding in during 2026, so check the current rules in the 2GIS app or at the ticket machines before you rely on it.

Which bus goes from Astana airport to the city?

Buses 10 and 12 leave from the stop outside the terminal and run roughly 06:00–22:30 through the Left Bank, past Khan Shatyr and Baiterek, to Astana-1 railway station on the Right Bank. The ride to the centre takes 40–50 minutes. As of October 2026 the fare is about 110 ₸ by contactless bank card or QR code, more in cash, and the city has announced a rise to 150 ₸ from 1 December 2026. A night route, 201, was extended to the airport in 2024 but runs infrequently.

Buses are warm, clean and reliable, but they have no luggage racks, and at rush hour they fill with commuters. Route numbers in Astana changed several times in 2025–2026 as the city reshaped its network around the light rail, so confirm in 2GIS before you set off. For a solo traveller with a backpack in daylight, the bus is perfectly fine.

How much is a taxi from Astana airport?

Ride-hailing apps. Yandex Go and inDrive both work at NQZ and quote the fare up front: around 4,000 ₸ (about $8) to the Left Bank on an ordinary day in 2026. You need mobile data and the app set up with a working payment method, which is easiest with a local SIM or an eSIM bought before departure. Two catches. First, in snowstorms and deep cold far fewer drivers are online, so prices can double or triple and waits stretch to 15–20 minutes. Second, when several long-haul flights land together in the early hours, the same thing happens. Wait indoors until the app shows the car has arrived.

Drivers in the arrivals hall. Men offering "taxi" at the exit will drive you for cash. Some quote fairly; others ask three or four times the app fare, particularly from foreigners. If you use one, agree the price in tenge before your bags go in the boot.

Pre-booked taxi firms and booking sites. In a 2025 review, local firms and international platforms charged 11,500–16,000 ₸ ($23–32) for a booked airport ride. Cars and language skills vary.

Private transfer. A private Astana airport transfer with RideKZ costs $45 for a sedan, $65 for a minivan for six, $90 for a 4x4 and $120 for a Sprinter, per car, plus $10 between 23:00 and 06:00. The price includes an English-speaking driver waiting in the hall with a name sign, flight tracking and 90 minutes of free waiting, and you pay at the end.

How cold is Astana in winter, and do blizzards close the roads?

Astana is one of the coldest capitals in the world. The January average is around −15 °C, nights of −30 °C arrive most winters, and the steppe wind makes it feel colder still. Snow usually lies from November to early April. Several times each winter a buran, a blizzard with blowing snow and near-zero visibility, crosses the region.

Inside the city, roads stay open: the airport road and the main avenues are cleared first, and a blizzard mostly means a slower drive (40–60 minutes instead of 25–35) and possible flight delays. Outside the city it is a different story. When conditions are dangerous the road authority KazAvtoZhol closes whole stretches of intercity highway to all vehicles and police turn cars back at the city edge. On 16 December 2025, for example, the Astana–Shchuchinsk highway towards Burabay was closed from km 18 to km 232 from mid-morning until the following day. Closures are often announced only hours ahead.

What this means for you: keep a coat, hat and gloves in your hand luggage; do not plan a tight same-day connection from a winter arrival to the lakes; and if you are booked on the airport to Burabay transfer, expect us to message you if a closure looks likely so you can stay the night in Astana instead. Waiting at a bus stop at −28 °C with a north wind is genuinely risky for children and older travellers, which is the strongest argument for a car that meets you indoors.

Which part of Astana are you going to?

The Ishim (Esil) river splits the city. The Left Bank is the new capital built since 1997: the government district, Baiterek tower, Khan Shatyr, the Hazret Sultan mosque, EXPO with the Astana International Financial Centre, and most international hotels. The Right Bank is the older Soviet-era city, with Astana-1 station, the old centre and cheaper apartments. Indicative car times from the airport:

DestinationBy carBest public option
EXPO / AIFC15–20 minbus or taxi
Mangilik El Avenue20–25 minLRT Mangilik El
Baiterek, Khan Shatyr25–30 minLRT Baiterek, bus 10/12
Nurly Zhol station≈20 minLRT to the terminus
Right Bank, Astana-1 station30–45 minbus 10/12

Intercity trains to Almaty, Burabay and Karaganda leave from both Nurly Zhol and Astana-1, so check which one is on your ticket before choosing a hotel or a route. Times are as of October 2026 and grow by 10–20 minutes at rush hour on the bridges.

How do I get back to Astana airport for my flight?

The light rail and buses start around 06:00, which is too late for the many early-morning departures to Europe and Asia. For those, a booked car or an app ordered the night before is the realistic choice; apps can be slow to find a driver between 03:00 and 05:00 in winter. By car, allow 25–30 minutes from Baiterek and 40 minutes from the Right Bank. Arrive about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one, and leave 30–40 minutes earlier after a night of heavy snow, because car parks and the drop-off lane are slower to clear than the main road.

A return transfer with RideKZ costs the same as the arrival, and if you spend the day in meetings first, a private driver in Astana by the day can finish at the airport with your bags already in the car.
