How does the meet and greet at Astana airport work?

The day before you fly we send the driver's name, photo, car model and plate number on WhatsApp. The driver tracks your flight number, so a delay simply moves the pickup; the 90 free minutes start from actual landing, which is plenty for passport control, bags and a SIM card. Your driver waits just past the exit from the baggage hall at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) with your name on a sign, takes your luggage and walks you to the car in the short-stay car park a minute away. If you cannot find each other, message the WhatsApp number on your confirmation and a coordinator answers in English.

Before you leave the terminal it is worth doing two things: buy a local SIM or eSIM in arrivals (signal on the motorway is good, in the deeper forest around the lakes it is patchy), and take a little cash in tenge from an ATM for the park gate, lakeside cafes and boat hire. What is the route from NQZ to Burabay?

The airport lies south-east of Astana and Burabay is due north, so your driver does not cross the centre. He takes the city's ring road around the eastern side and joins the Astana–Kokshetau–Petropavlovsk highway at the northern exit. From there it is 211 km of divided four-lane toll motorway to Shchuchinsk across flat wheat steppe, then 20–25 km of forest road into Burabay National Park. Typical timing from landing:

• 0:00–0:40 at the terminal (passports, bags, SIM).
• About 25–35 minutes around the ring road to the northern exit, longer at weekday rush hour.
• About 2 h 30 min on the motorway, with a coffee and toilet stop at a fuel station around Akkol or Makinsk if you want it.
• 15–25 minutes from Shchuchinsk to your resort, depending on which lake you are staying on.

The Astana–Shchuchinsk toll (about 504–586 ₸ per car each way in 2026) is charged electronically by number plate and is included in your price, as are fuel and airport parking.

What if I land at night?

Many flights from Europe, the Gulf and Asia land in Astana between midnight and 5 a.m. Pickups from 23:00 to 06:00 carry a fixed $20 surcharge, shown before you book, so there is nothing to negotiate in a dark car park. The motorway is lit at junctions only and is quiet at night; our drivers on night runs are rested and stick to the limit, so expect roughly the same 3 h 20 min. Check that your resort has 24-hour reception (Rixos Borovoe and the larger hotels do; small guesthouses and private villas often do not) and tell us your arrival time so we can call ahead. If you would rather sleep first, we can take you to a hotel in Astana (an airport to city transfer from $45) and do the run north after breakfast as a separate Astana to Burabay transfer.

Will the road to Burabay be closed when I land in winter?

It can be. Between November and March, and occasionally in late October or early April, KazAvtoZhol closes the Astana–Shchuchinsk highway to all vehicles during blizzards and black ice. On 16 December 2025 the whole km 18–232 stretch shut at 09:45, with reopening estimated for 08:00 the next morning; on 20 January 2025 it closed at 17:00 overnight. Police stop traffic at the city exit, and there is no way round.

• We check the forecast and KazAvtoZhol notices before your departure and message you if a closure is likely.
• If the road is shut when you land, your driver takes you to a hotel in Astana (charged as an airport–city transfer), and we drive you north as soon as it reopens with the Burabay fare unchanged, or refund it in full.
• On the way home, plan to be back in Astana the evening before a winter flight. Leaving the lakes at dawn for a morning departure is the one plan we talk people out of.

Can I take the train from the airport instead?

Only with a change and a lot of waiting. There is no rail link or direct bus from NQZ to Burabay. You would take a taxi into the city to the station and catch the Burabay Express, the electric train launched in July 2025, which leaves Astana once a day at 11:00, five days a week, and arrives at Kurort-Borovoe at 13:35. Fares are 2,962–5,805 ₸ (January 2026). Kurort-Borovoe station is outside the villages, and Rixos Borovoe is about 15 km away, so you need a second taxi at the other end. For a late-morning arrival it can work; for any other flight time, a direct car is several hours quicker.

Which resort are you heading to?

Send us the hotel name, not just "Burabay": the park has two main lakes and several villages, and the last kilometres differ.

• Lake Shchuchye: the larger, deeper, colder lake by Shchuchinsk, home of the five-star Rixos Borovoe (spa, private beach, wake park), the boutique Dom u Ozera and Les Hotel's cabins with hot tubs. Reached first, about 3 h 10 min from the airport.
• Lake Burabay and Burabay village: the smaller, warmer lake with the promenade, Okzhetpes rock, Zhumbaktas and Blue Bay, and hotels such as Wyndham Garden Burabay and Altyn Kun.
• Forest lodges and villas on side tracks: fine by sedan in summer; with deep snow choose the Land Cruiser Prado.

The national park gate charges per vehicle: 1,298 ₸ for a car on weekdays and 1,730 ₸ on weekends and holidays from May to September; 4,325–6,488 ₸ for a minivan or Sprinter (2026). The driver pays and you settle it at the end. Once you are settled, a day around the lakes with a driver can be added.

Per car, one way: sedan $160 (up to 3 guests, two large cases), minivan $200 (up to 6), 4x4 Land Cruiser Prado $240 (up to 4) and Sprinter $330 (up to 16, ideal for ski or golf groups). Add $20 for pickups between 23:00 and 06:00. Included: English-speaking driver, flight tracking, name sign, 90 minutes of waiting, fuel, tolls, parking, bottled water, free child seats and a stop of up to an hour on the way.
