Burabay day trip from Astana by private car
A Burabay day trip from Astana is about 480 km return, 3 hours each way on the toll motorway and 5–6 hours at the lakes, from $220 for the whole car with an English-speaking driver. That buys you Okzhetpes rock and the Zhumbaktas "Sphinx" across Lake Burabay, a walk at Blue Bay, lunch by the water and a look at Lake Shchuchye on the way home, all at your pace while the driver waits. The car is yours for the day, so a family of five in a minivan pays $270 in total, not per head. In winter we start earlier, watch for blizzard road closures and move the date free if the highway shuts.

Is Burabay worth a day trip from Astana?
Yes, if you want to see what northern Kazakhstan looks like beyond the glass towers of the capital. Burabay is a small island of granite hills, pine and birch forest and clear lakes rising out of completely flat steppe, 240 km north of Astana. Locals call it the Kazakh Switzerland, which oversells the mountains (the top is under 1,000 m) but not the contrast. It is also deeply woven into Kazakh legend: Abylai Khan is said to have gathered his warriors here, and nearly every rock has a story.
A day trip works because the road is a fast motorway for 211 of the 240 km. You leave at 7:30–8:00, are at the lakes by 11:00 and back for dinner. Spending a night or two is better if you want to hike to the top of Kokshe, use a spa or see sunset over Okzhetpes; in that case book a one-way Astana to Burabay transfer and the return separately.
What will I see: Okzhetpes, Zhumbaktas, Blue Bay and the two lakes
- Okzhetpes ("the arrow won't reach"): a 380-metre granite rock of stacked boulders on the shore of Lake Burabay. Legend says a beautiful girl promised to marry the suitor whose arrow reached her on the summit; none did. Best seen from the lakeshore road and from the water.
- Zhumbaktas ("the mysterious stone"): a rock islet in the lake opposite Okzhetpes. From one angle it looks like a young woman's face, from another an old woman, which is why many guides call it the Sphinx. You view it from the shore or a hired boat; landing is not the point.
- Blue Bay (Goluboy Zaliv): the curved sandy beach and pine slope facing both rocks, the classic postcard view of Burabay. Busy in July–August, quiet in the morning.
- Lake Burabay vs Lake Shchuchye: Burabay is the smaller, shallower lake with the village, cliffs and legends; it warms up enough for a swim in July. Shchuchye, next to Shchuchinsk, is bigger, deeper and noticeably colder, with very clear water and the large resorts on its forested shore. On a day trip you see Burabay properly and stop at a Shchuchye viewpoint on the way out or back.
- Kokshe (Sinyukha) and Bolektau: Kokshe is the highest peak of the massif at about 947 m; the full hike is a half day, too long for most day trips. Bolektau has a shorter path to a viewpoint over the lake.
- Abylai Khan's glade and the Nature Museum in Burabay village: a good 45-minute stop with children or in poor weather.
What does a typical day look like?
- 07:45 pickup at your Astana hotel; out of the city before traffic.
- 09:15 coffee and toilet stop at a fuel station around Akkol or Makinsk.
- 10:45 Shchuchinsk, then the forest road; national park gate (the driver pays the vehicle fee).
- 11:00 Okzhetpes and Zhumbaktas viewpoints, then a walk at Blue Bay. In summer, a 30–40 minute boat ride for the best angle on both rocks.
- 13:00 lunch in Burabay village or at a resort restaurant: lake fish, beshbarmak, shashlyk.
- 14:30 short hike towards Bolektau, the Nature Museum or Abylai Khan's glade.
- 16:30 Lake Shchuchye viewpoint, perhaps tea at Rixos Borovoe, then the motorway home.
- 19:30–20:00 back in Astana.
The order is flexible. For photographs, the lake is often glassy and the shore empty before noon, which is why we aim to reach Blue Bay first; by mid-afternoon in July the beach fills and wind ruffles the reflections. Stops of any length are your call within roughly 12 hours.
Can I do a Burabay day trip in winter?
Yes, and frozen Lake Burabay under snowy pines is genuinely beautiful, but winter changes three things.
- Road closures. During blizzards and black ice KazAvtoZhol closes the Astana–Shchuchinsk highway to all vehicles. On 16 December 2025 km 18–232 was shut for about 22 hours. We check the night before and at dawn; if the road is closed we move your day trip free of charge or refund in full.
- Daylight. In December the sun sets around 17:00 in Astana, so we leave at 7:00–7:30 and plan the lake part for 10:30–15:00.
- Cold. −20 °C with wind on the steppe is normal in January. Bring proper boots and a hat; the driver keeps the car warm between stops.
Snow on the motorway is ploughed, so a sedan is fine; the 4x4 ($320) adds comfort on side roads to forest viewpoints.
Why not the train or a group tour?
The Burabay Express electric train (launched July 2025) leaves Astana at 11:00 and arrives at Kurort-Borovoe at 13:35, and the only return leaves at 14:15. As a day trip that gives you about 40 minutes at the lakes, and the station is outside the village anyway. It is a great one-way option if you stay overnight; it is not a day trip.
Group tours from Astana run mostly in Russian on a fixed schedule with 15–20 people and charge per person; Russian-language aggregators listed private guided tours from about 136,000 ₸ for up to three people in 2026. With RideKZ the car and driver are yours, the driver speaks English, and you decide when to leave each stop. Want commentary on the legends and history? Add a licensed local guide from $100 per day.
What is included, and what do I pay on the day?
Included: the car and English-speaking driver for the whole day, fuel, the Astana–Shchuchinsk toll both ways, parking, bottled water, child seats on request, and the driver waiting at every stop.
Paid on site: the national park vehicle fee (1,298 ₸ for a car on weekdays, 1,730 ₸ on weekends and holidays from 1 May to 30 September; 4,325–6,488 ₸ for a minivan or Sprinter, 2026 tariffs), which the driver pays at the gate and you reimburse; lunch; boat or catamaran hire; the museum.
Prices per car, return: sedan $220 (up to 3), minivan $270 (up to 6), 4x4 Land Cruiser Prado $320 (up to 4), Sprinter $440 (up to 16). Day trips are confirmed with a 30% deposit by card link; the rest is paid to the driver at the end. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and a free date change if the road is closed.
Which resorts are worth a lunch stop?
If you prefer a reliable restaurant to a village cafe, the resorts welcome day guests at their restaurants (spa access usually needs booking). Rixos Borovoe on Lake Shchuchye is the most polished, with a lakeside terrace in summer. Wyndham Garden Burabay sits right on Lake Burabay near the village. For something with more character, the boutique Dom u Ozera on Lake Shchuchye runs the French-Italian Le Pin. Tell the driver your preference and we can book a table. Arriving in Kazakhstan the same day? We also run Astana airport to Burabay transfers. For more around the capital, see the Astana hub or hire a private driver in Astana.

Questions
How much is a private day trip from Astana to Burabay?
$220 for a sedan (up to 3 guests), $270 for a minivan (6), $320 for a Land Cruiser Prado (4) and $440 for a 16-seat Sprinter, return for the whole day, per car. Fuel, tolls, waiting and an English-speaking driver are included; the park vehicle fee, lunch and boats are extra.
Is one day enough for Burabay?
5 to 6 hours at the lakes is enough for Okzhetpes, Zhumbaktas, Blue Bay, lunch, a short walk and a Lake Shchuchye viewpoint if you leave Astana around 8:00. It is not enough to climb Kokshe or use a spa; for that, stay a night.
What is the Burabay National Park entry fee in 2026?
1,298 ₸ per passenger car on weekdays and 1,730 ₸ on weekends and holidays from 1 May to 30 September. Minivans and Sprinters pay 4,325 ₸ and 6,488 ₸. The fee is per vehicle, not per person; your driver pays at the gate and you reimburse him.
Can I do the Burabay day trip by train?
Not comfortably. The Burabay Express arrives at 13:35 and the only return leaves at 14:15, leaving about 40 minutes, and the station is outside the village. It is a good one-way option if you stay overnight.
What is the difference between Lake Burabay and Lake Shchuchye?
2 lakes 20 km apart. Lake Burabay is smaller and warmer, with Okzhetpes, Zhumbaktas, Blue Bay and the village. Lake Shchuchye is bigger, deeper and colder, with clearer water and the large resorts such as Rixos Borovoe. A day trip covers both.
Can I visit Burabay in winter?
Yes, from December to March, but blizzards can close the Astana–Shchuchinsk highway for up to a day. We check road status the night before and at dawn, and move your trip free or refund in full if it is closed. We start at 7:00–7:30 because it is dark by about 17:00.
