Almaty airport to the city: every option compared
Almaty airport (ALA) is about 15–18 km from the city centre, 25–40 minutes by car, and you have five real options: bus 92 for well under $1, Yandex Go for roughly $5–12, the official taxi counter in arrivals, your hotel's car, or a pre-booked private transfer from $40 per car. None of them is wrong; they suit different travellers. This guide sets out what each costs in 2026, where to find it in Terminal 2 and Terminal 1, what changes when you land at 3 am, and the handful of tricks worth knowing before you walk out of customs.

Which terminal is international at Almaty airport?
Terminal 2 handles every international flight. It opened on 1 June 2024, is bright and well signed in English, and has around 20 passport-control booths plus a few automated e-gates. Flights from Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Seoul, Delhi, Urumqi, Bishkek and Tashkent all arrive here. Terminal 1 is the older building and now handles domestic flights only: Astana, Shymkent, Aktau, Atyrau and the rest.
The terminals stand a short walk apart on the landside, but they are not connected airside. If you connect from an international flight to a domestic one, you clear immigration in T2, collect your bags, walk to T1 and go through security again. Allow at least two and a half hours for that, more at night. Everything below about arrivals refers to T2 unless stated, because that is where nearly all foreign visitors land.
Option 1: is there a bus from Almaty airport to the city?
Yes. Bus 92 is the main daytime route, roughly 06:00–22:00 or a little later, and since late 2025 it again enters the airport grounds and stops by the terminals. It runs into the centre along Suyunbay and Raiymbek avenues; the ride is 45–70 minutes depending on traffic. Bus 3 covers the night, roughly 23:00–06:00, about once an hour. Routes 79, 86 and 106 stop on Mailin Street just outside the airport barrier, a 5–7 minute walk.
Fares are tiny but sources in 2026 disagree on the exact figure: roughly 80–120 ₸ with an Onay transport card or QR payment, and 150–200 ₸ in cash to the driver. Under half a US dollar either way. Onay cards are sold from a machine near the exit that takes notes only.
Honest verdict: fine for a solo traveller with a backpack who knows where the hotel is from the nearest stop. Hard work with two suitcases at rush hour, and impractical after a long-haul night flight.
Option 2: how much is Yandex Go from Almaty airport?
Yandex Go is the app nearly every local uses, and it works at ALA. In 2026 a normal fare to the centre is roughly 2,000–4,000 ₸ ($4–8), rising to the equivalent of $10–15 or more when several wide-body flights land together, when it rains or snows, or late at night. In 2025 one widely shared Kazakh news story quoted an airport ride of 18,680 ₸ in a surge, against 4,500 ₸ for the same trip in the other direction. inDrive also works, with fares you negotiate in the app.
- You need mobile data on landing: buy an eSIM before you fly, or queue for a local SIM in arrivals.
- Link a card in the app before departure and test it; foreign cards usually work but not always.
- Follow the app's suggested pickup point outside the terminal, and check the plate before you get in.
- Drivers rarely speak English, and the standard car takes three people with luggage. Order a larger class for more.
- If the surge is high, waiting 15–20 minutes for the arrival wave to clear often halves it.
Honest verdict: the best value for a confident traveller with data, light luggage and a daytime arrival.
Option 3: is there an official taxi at Almaty airport?
Yes. There is an official airport taxi counter in the arrivals hall, with branded cars at a marked stand outside and fixed fares by city zone, payable by card, terminal or QR code. As of 2026, guides report fares of roughly 4,000–6,000 ₸ ($8–12) to the centre; check the board at the counter, because zones and operators have changed several times. In 2023 the airport also put up boards in international arrivals listing official fares in Kazakh, Russian, English and Chinese, precisely because foreigners were being overcharged.
Honest verdict: a sound choice if you have no data and no booking. You will queue at the counter, the driver will probably not speak English, and there is no one waiting for you if your bags are late.
Option 4: should I use my hotel's airport car?
Most five-star hotels in Almaty, from the Ritz-Carlton and Rixos to the big business hotels on Al-Farabi Avenue, will send a car if you ask. It is convenient: the hotel knows you are coming and the bill goes on your room. It is also usually the most expensive option, often in the region of $60–120 one way as of 2026, and prices vary a lot by hotel and car, so ask for the figure in writing. Some hotels outsource the run to the same transfer companies the rest of the market uses. Smaller hotels and apartments often offer a pickup too, sometimes at a fair price, sometimes with a driver who simply calls a taxi.
Option 5: a pre-booked private transfer
This is what we do. A private Almaty airport transfer costs $40 per car for a sedan (up to 3 guests), $60 for a minivan (up to 6), $90 for a Land Cruiser-class 4x4 and $120 for a 16-seat Mercedes Sprinter, to any address in Almaty, plus $10 between 23:00 and 06:00. The driver tracks your flight, waits at the arrivals exit with your name on a sign, gives you 90 minutes free from the actual landing, speaks English, and helps with the bags. Child seats are free. You pay the driver at the end, by card or cash.
It is more than an app and less than most hotel cars. The point of paying it is certainty: the price is fixed before you board, nothing depends on your phone working, and someone is responsible for you if the flight is three hours late. Arriving in Almaty at night: what works?
A large share of international flights from the Gulf, Turkey and India land between midnight and 5:00. At that hour bus 92 has stopped and bus 3 runs roughly hourly on a route that may not pass your hotel. Yandex Go works but surges, and the taxi touts are at their most persistent with tired passengers. Roads are empty, so any car takes just 20–25 minutes. For a first visit, travelling with children, or arriving without a working SIM, a booked car is the calm choice: a sedan at night is $50 in total. Tell your hotel your flight number so reception expects a 3 am check-in.
SIM card, ATM and money exchange at Almaty airport
- SIM cards: Beeline, Kcell and Tele2 have kiosks in the terminal; bring your passport. An eSIM bought before departure saves the queue and means Yandex Go works the moment you land.
- Wi-Fi: free throughout the terminal, but login is by SMS code, which is awkward without a local number.
- ATMs: in the arrivals area. Use a bank-branded machine and decline the dynamic currency conversion: choose to be charged in tenge.
- Exchange: airport counters give weaker rates than city exchange offices. Change only what you need for the first day, if anything.
- Cash: cards and QR payments work almost everywhere in Almaty. 5,000–10,000 ₸ in cash covers a bus driver, a market and tips.
- Navigation: install 2GIS, the map locals use; it works well offline.
Which Almaty airport taxi scams should I avoid?
The risk at ALA is overcharging, not crime. The pattern is familiar from many airports:
- Hall touts: men saying "taxi, taxi" inside the arrivals hall quote foreigners 20,000–40,000 ₸, or a round number in dollars. Walk past.
- The fake name: someone reads your name off a driver's sign or a booking screen and claims to be your driver. A real booked driver shows the sign and has the name and plate you were sent in advance.
- Cash-only switch: a driver who agreed card payment suddenly has a broken terminal. Agree the total and the payment method before you get in.
- Per-person pricing: a quote that turns out to be per head at the destination. Ask "total, for the car?"
- The wrong car: with Yandex Go, never get into a car whose plate does not match the app.
Never hand over your passport and never pay in advance to someone you met in the hall. Emergency numbers are 102 for police and 112 for all services.

Questions
How do I get from Almaty airport to the city centre?
Five ways: bus 92 by day or bus 3 at night for under $0.50, Yandex Go for roughly $4–8, the official taxi counter in arrivals for a fixed zone fare, your hotel's car, or a pre-booked private transfer from $40 per car. By car the 15–18 km drive takes 25–40 minutes; by bus 45–70 minutes.
How much is a taxi from Almaty airport to the city?
About 2,000–4,000 ₸ ($4–8) by Yandex Go at normal times in 2026, more in surges, at night or in snow. The official airport taxi counter charges fixed zone fares, reported at around 4,000–6,000 ₸ to the centre. Touts in the hall ask foreigners 20,000–40,000 ₸. A pre-booked private sedan is $40 per car.
Which terminal is international at Almaty airport?
Terminal 2, opened on 1 June 2024, handles all international flights; Terminal 1 handles domestic flights. The two are a short walk apart but not connected airside, so an international-to-domestic connection means clearing immigration, collecting bags and passing security again in T1. Allow at least 2.5 hours for that connection.
Is there a train or metro from Almaty airport?
No: there is no rail or metro link to Almaty airport as of 2026. The metro runs only in the southern and central city. Your choices are city buses 92 and 3 (plus 79, 86 and 106 from Mailin Street), ride-hailing apps, the official taxi counter, a hotel car or a private transfer.
Is Yandex Go safe at Almaty airport?
Yes, and it is what most locals use: the app records the driver, route and fare. The main risks are a surge price and getting into the wrong car, so always match the plate. You need mobile data on landing, so set up an eSIM before you fly or buy a Beeline, Kcell or Tele2 SIM in the terminal.
Do I need cash when I land in Almaty?
Only 5,000–10,000 ₸ at most, and often none. Cards and QR payments work almost everywhere, including Yandex Go, the official taxi counter and private transfer drivers. If you want tenge, use a bank ATM in arrivals and choose to be charged in tenge; the airport exchange counters give weaker rates than offices in town.
What is the best way to get from Almaty airport at night?
A pre-booked car is the calmest: $50 for a sedan between 23:00 and 06:00, with the driver waiting at the exit. Bus 3 runs only about hourly and may not pass your hotel; Yandex Go works but surges. Empty roads mean any car reaches central hotels in 20–25 minutes.
