How long is the drive from Almaty to the Turgen gorge?
About 1.5 hours to the entrance of the gorge. Your driver takes the Kuldzha highway (A351) east past Talgar and the Esik turn to the village of Turgen at about 70 km. Morning traffic leaving Almaty can add 20–30 minutes, so a 9:00 pickup is a good balance. In Turgen the car turns south and the road follows the river into the mountains: asphalt at first, then a mix of patched tarmac and gravel the further you go.
A sedan is fine for the lower gorge, the trout farms and the Bear waterfall trailhead. Above that, towards Batan and the Kairak valley, the road deteriorates; if you want to go high or add the Assy Plateau, book the 4x4.
- Turgen village, ≈70 km — fuel, shops, ATM.
- Ile-Alatau eco-post at the gorge entrance — park fee.
- Trout farms and restaurants, ≈5–15 km into the gorge — lunch stop.
- Bear waterfall trailhead — short forest walk.
- Batan — cafe and guest houses, the start of the Kairak and Assy routes.
Which Turgen waterfalls can you see in one day?
The gorge has several falls on side streams. Most day visitors see one or two of these:
- Bear waterfall (Medvezhiy) — the classic. About 30 m high, reached by a well-trodden path through spruce forest, roughly 2.5 km return with around 150 m of climb. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Suitable for most people in sensible shoes.
- Kairak waterfall — in the Kairak side valley, higher and more dramatic (often quoted at around 40–45 m), with a longer, rougher approach. Getting to the start usually means a 4x4 or a local off-road van from Batan, then a walk of an hour or more each way. Allow half a day.
- Smaller falls along the gorge, sometimes signed as Kaskadny or Rocky, are short stops rather than hikes.
Names on local signs, in Russian and on maps do not always agree, and some paths cross private land where a small fee may be asked. Your driver knows which trails are open that season; with a private driver you can decide on the day.
Do you have to pay to enter the Turgen gorge?
Yes. The gorge is part of Ile-Alatau National Park, and the fee is collected at the eco-post on the way in. Published figures as of 2026 were about 590 tenge per person plus about 1,180 tenge per car — a few dollars in total — and since March 2026 entry to national parks is free for children under 18. Tariffs change, so check before you go. The park fee is not included in our price; your driver pays it at the barrier and you settle in tenge cash or card.
Separately, some waterfall trails start on land run by guest houses or farms, which may ask a small access or parking fee (typically a few hundred to a thousand tenge). Keep small notes handy.
Where to eat in the Turgen gorge: trout farms and cafes
Trout is the local speciality. Several farms in the lower gorge raise fish in spring-fed ponds and grill or fry it to order, often served in wooden pavilions by the river. Some let you catch your own. A trout lunch with salad, bread and tea is the centrepiece of most Turgen days; allow an hour, as fish is cooked fresh. Prices are by weight; ask before ordering.
Further up, Batan has simple cafes and guest houses with plov, shashlik and tea. There is nothing at the waterfalls themselves, so carry water (bottled water is in the car) and a snack. Toilets: at restaurants and cafes; basic or none on trails.
When is the best time to visit the Turgen waterfalls?
Late May to October. Waterfalls are at their fullest in June and July with snowmelt; September and early October bring yellow birch and aspen against dark spruce, and clear light for photographs. July and August weekends are busy with Almaty families, so go on a weekday or arrive before 10:00.
Winter visits are possible to the lower gorge and the Bear waterfall freezes into ice columns, but paths are icy and you need proper footwear; ask us about conditions. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in early summer, and the gorge is 5–8 °C cooler than the city. Mobile signal is fine at the entrance and patchy higher up.

Can you combine Turgen with Assy, Issyk lake or other trips?
The natural pairing is the Assy Plateau: drive up through the gorge in a 4x4, see the summer pastures and the observatory, and stop at the Bear waterfall on the way down. That needs a Land Cruiser and a full 10–11 hour day (June–September). Another option is to add the Issyk lake and the Golden Man museum in Esik, which is on the same highway.
If you have more time, Turgen fits easily into our five days around Almaty, alongside Big Almaty Lake and Charyn Canyon. For a lighter half day close to the city, consider Medeu and Shymbulak.

How long is the walk to the Bear waterfall in Turgen?
About 2.5 km return with roughly 150 m of climb through spruce forest, so 1–1.5 hours at an easy pace. The waterfall is around 30 m high. The path can be muddy and rooty; trainers with grip are enough in summer, but in winter it is icy and you need proper boots.
Do I need a 4x4 for the Turgen gorge?
Not for the lower gorge, the trout farms and the Bear waterfall: a sedan or minivan is fine. You need a 4x4 for the higher road towards Batan and the Kairak valley, and definitely for the Assy Plateau. Our Land Cruiser option is $170 per car for the Turgen day.
What is the entrance fee for the Turgen gorge?
About 590 tenge per person plus about 1,180 tenge per car as of 2026, paid at the Ile-Alatau National Park eco-post; children under 18 have entered national parks free since March 2026. Some trails on private land ask a small extra fee. Check before you go as tariffs change.
When is the best time to see the Turgen waterfalls?
June and July for the fullest flow from snowmelt; September and early October for autumn colour and clear light. Late May to October is the comfortable season. Weekends in July and August are busy, so a weekday or an early start is better. In winter the Bear waterfall freezes.
