Kaindy Lake by Land Cruiser: the sunken forest in one day

Kaindy Lake is about 310 km and 5.5 hours from Almaty. The last 12 km leave the asphalt at Saty and climb a gravel gorge track that really needs a 4x4. A private Toyota Land Cruiser with an English-speaking driver costs from $380 per car for up to four guests, door to door and back. Because your own 4x4 handles the track, you skip the queue for the shared off-roaders at the checkpoint. You choose when to arrive, which at Kaindy matters more than anything.

How do you get from Almaty to Kaindy Lake?

The route runs east out of Almaty on the A351 to Shelek, then south-east through Kokpek and the Shilik valley, before turning off at Zhalanash into the Saty gorge. The first ≈295 km to Saty are paved and take about 4.5 hours with one coffee stop. There are a couple of police posts on the way. Your driver carries the car's papers, and you will rarely be asked for anything.

Just east of Saty, by the village entrance, the Kaindy road turns south into the gorge. From there it is about 12 km of gravel, ruts and stream crossings to the upper car park. Allow 40–60 minutes in a 4x4. From the car park it is a 10–20 minute walk, partly downhill, to the shore. Locals offer horses for the walk if you prefer.

If you want to add Charyn Canyon or the Kolsai lakes, look at the Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy day trip or the unhurried 2-day Kolsai and Charyn tour.

Do I really need a 4x4 for Kaindy?

For the last 12 km, yes. The gorge track has loose rock, deep ruts after rain, and fords where the Kaindy river spills across the road in early summer. Sedans and minivans stop at the park checkpoint. Their passengers then switch to local off-roaders, often old UAZ vans, which wait to fill up and are paid in cash. With a Land Cruiser Prado or 300, you stay in the same seat from your hotel to the lake.

Things are changing. A 9.9 km capital rebuild of the Kaindy road started in October 2025 and, as of mid-2026, was due to finish in autumn 2026. Park officials have also said private cars may be limited to designated parking. As of October 2026 we treat the track as a 4x4 route. If the park restricts private vehicles on your date, your driver takes you to the furthest permitted point and arranges the official transfer. We confirm the rules the day before departure.

What is the sunken forest at Kaindy?

In January 1911 the Kemin earthquake shook the northern Tian Shan and sent a landslide across the Kaindy gorge. The natural dam backed up the river, flooding a stand of Schrenk spruce. A century later the trunks still rise straight out of the turquoise water, bare of branches above the surface. Below it, the needles are preserved by water that stays around 5–6 °C even in August.

The lake is about 400 m long and up to 30 m deep, at roughly 2,000 m above sea level. The colour comes from limestone sediment and is most intense on sunny days from June to September. For photographs, the trunks are best lit in the morning before about 10:00, or in the late afternoon. The glassy reflections need a windless hour, which is most often early morning.

What time should I leave Almaty for Kaindy?

Kaindy is small, and at peak the Kolsai park sees thousands of visitors a day, almost all at Lower Kolsai and Kaindy. Day tours from Almaty arrive between 11:00 and 14:00. There are two ways to avoid them:

Expect about 11 hours of driving in a single day. The Land Cruiser's ride makes a real difference on the gorge track and on the long A351 home.

How much are the Kaindy park tickets in 2026?

Kaindy lies inside Kolsai Lakes National Park, which has a ticket post at the Kaindy turn-off. The 2026 tariff, set in MRP (4,325 ₸ in 2026), is 0.2 MRP = 865 ₸ per person per day and 0.6 MRP = 2,595 ₸ for a passenger car, which covers a Land Cruiser. In 2026 the Kaindy post introduced an electronic barrier with card payment. Carry some cash anyway for horses, the off-roaders, toilets and the tea stalls by the car park. We have not seen a separate foreigner rate. Tickets are paid on the spot and are not included in our price. If you also visit Charyn, its national park charges the same tariff.

Can you visit Kaindy in winter?

Yes, and many photographers think it is the best season. From roughly late December to March the lake freezes clear, and the spruce trunks stand in ice that you can see through on cold, windless days. Ice divers have explored the drowned forest under it. The gorge track is snow-covered and icy, and in winter only a proper 4x4 with winter tyres should attempt it. Daytime temperatures run −10 to −20 °C, colder at night.

Three cautions. Never walk onto the ice without a local who knows its thickness, as springs keep some patches thin. In March and April, avalanche risk on the gorge slopes can close the route completely. Short days mean an early start is no longer optional: leave Almaty by 05:00 to have the light at the lake. We check road and avalanche status with the park the evening before.

What is included in the Kaindy Land Cruiser trip?

Eat in Saty on the way back: guesthouses serve plov, lagman and fresh bread, and there are simple cafés near the Kolsai turn. Mobile signal fades in the gorge, so your driver keeps track of time. See every route on our prices page, and for other 4x4 day trips try the Assy Plateau.

Questions

How much is a private Kaindy Lake tour from Almaty?

$380 per car for a Toyota Land Cruiser with an English-speaking driver, for up to four guests, Almaty to Kaindy and back in one day. Fuel, parking and the 4x4 gorge track are included. Park tickets (865 ₸ per person plus 2,595 ₸ per car in 2026), horses and meals are paid separately on the spot.

How far is Kaindy Lake from Saty?

12 km of unpaved gorge track from the turn just east of Saty, which takes 40–60 minutes in a 4x4, then a 10–20 minute walk to the shore. In 2026 the road was being rebuilt (9.9 km, due autumn 2026), so conditions and access rules may change. Check before you go.

Can I drive to Kaindy in a normal car?

2 options without a 4x4: park at the checkpoint and switch to a local off-roader, or walk the 12 km track. Sedans and minivans are not suitable for the gravel, ruts and fords. A Land Cruiser takes you up directly, where the park allows private vehicles.

Can I see Kaindy and Kolsai in one day?

Yes, in about 13–14 hours: 11 hours of driving, an hour at Kaindy and an hour at Lower Kolsai, 14 km apart via Saty. There is no time for the trail to the second Kolsai lake. For that, stay overnight in Saty on the 2-day tour.

Is Kaindy Lake frozen in winter?

From around late December to March the lake freezes clear, and the sunken spruce trunks stand in ice. It is one of the most photographed winter scenes in Kazakhstan. The track is snowy, so only a 4x4 should go, and you should never step on the ice without a local who knows its thickness.

When is the best time to visit Kaindy?

Mid-June to early October for the turquoise water, with mid-September best for autumn colour and smaller crowds. Arrive before 10:30 or after 16:00 to miss the day-tour buses. January to March is for the frozen lake; March–April can bring avalanche closures on the gorge track.
