Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy in one day by private car

Charyn Canyon, Kaindy Lake and Kolsai Lake in one day is a loop of about 600 km that takes around 14 hours: leave Almaty at 6:00, back around 20:00–21:00. It costs from $340 per minivan with an English-speaking driver. That works out to roughly nine hours in the car and five on your feet. It suits fit travellers with one free day and no other chance to come back. Everyone else, especially families, older travellers and photographers, will get far more out of the 2-day version with a night in Saty.

Can you really do Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy in one day?

Yes, but it is a long day, and we would rather you know that before you book. The driving alone is about nine hours: three to Charyn, two from Charyn to Saty village, short hops to the lakes, then four to four and a half back to Almaty. That leaves roughly five hours for the three places together. You get about 1.5 hours at Charyn, 1.5–2 hours for Kaindy including the off-road transfer, and an hour at Kolsai Lake 1. It is enough to see each place properly. It is not enough to linger, hike to the upper lakes or wait for better light.

It suits: fit adults on a tight Almaty stopover, people who sleep well in a car, and travellers whose next flight or border crossing fixes the dates. It does not suit: children under about eight, anyone prone to car sickness on mountain roads, older travellers who find long sits hard, and photographers. Midday is exactly when you will be at Charyn, and the light is flat then. For most of our guests the better trip is the 2-day Kolsai Lakes and Charyn tour. It costs more, but you get Charyn in the evening glow, a night in a Saty guesthouse and Kaindy before the tour buses.

What does the one-day route look like, hour by hour?

Your driver can reverse the order and do the lakes first and Charyn in the late afternoon. That gives Charyn better light, but you finish later and the last three hours are in the dark from September.

Do I need a 4x4 for Kaindy, and how do you get to the lake?

The track from Saty up the Kaindy gorge is about 11 km of rough dirt with stream crossings. Park rules and the state of the road mean visitors normally leave their own car in Saty and ride the last stretch in a local UAZ or other high-clearance 4x4 run by villagers. Expect about 30–40 minutes of bumpy riding. Your driver arranges it on the spot; you pay the local operator in cash. From the drop-off it is a walk of roughly 1 km, partly downhill on a loose path, to the lake.

That is why we do not offer a sedan on this route. The minivan and 4x4 handle the gravel to Saty and Kolsai in any dry weather, and the Land Cruiser is the better choice after rain or in October, when the first snow can dust the road to Saty. For more on the lake itself, see Kaindy Lake from Almaty.

What will I actually see at each stop?

Charyn Canyon, Valley of Castles

Red sandstone walls 80–100 m high and a trail of 2–3 km to the Charyn River, with a riverside eco-park, toilets and a café at the bottom. A park shuttle runs between the river and the trailhead for 500–1,000 ₸. On the one-day plan most people walk down part of the way and come back up by shuttle. More on the Charyn day trip page.

Black Canyon and Moon Canyon

Black Canyon is a viewpoint over the Charyn River gorge where it cuts through dark rock, on the road between Charyn and Saty. Moon Canyon is what tours call the pale eroded clay hills nearby. Both are 15-minute stops, nothing more.

Kaindy Lake

A lake formed by the 1911 Kebin earthquake landslide, with bleached Schrenk spruce trunks standing straight out of turquoise water at about 2,000 m. The water is clearest and stillest in the morning. By mid-afternoon wind often ruffles the reflections.

Kolsai Lake 1

The lowest of three lakes, in a spruce-lined valley at about 1,800 m, with a boardwalk, boat rental in summer and horses for hire. Lake 2 is a hike of 2.5–3 hours each way and impossible on this schedule.

What do the park tickets cost?

You pass through two national parks, Charyn and Kolsai Koldery. Both price entry in MRP, which is 4,325 ₸ in 2026. As of the January 2026 tariff, a person pays about 0.2 MRP (≈865 ₸) in each park and a car about 0.6–0.7 MRP. Charyn adds a small sanitary fee and Kolsai a parking fee of about 221 ₸. On top of that come the in-canyon shuttle at Charyn and the Kaindy 4x4 ride, both paid in cash locally. Our price covers the car, fuel, driver and waiting. Tickets and the local rides are not included, as on all our tours. Budget roughly $15–25 per person for everything, and bring tenge in cash; cards work in some places and not others.

When does the one-day trip work, and when should you skip it?

Late May to mid-October. Before that, snowmelt can make the Kaindy track muddy and impassable. From late October the days are short: the sun sets around 18:00, so on a 14-hour day you drive back in the dark, and frost appears on the road to Saty above 1,800 m. The trip runs in winter only as a 4x4 day to Kolsai, with Kaindy frozen and the access road often closed. July and August mean a hot Charyn, at over 35 °C on the canyon floor, but the best lakes. September and early October bring golden larches and birches and fewer people, and they are our favourite weeks. Mobile signal is patchy at Charyn and weak in Saty, and there is none at Kaindy, so tell anyone waiting for you not to worry.

Why we usually recommend two days instead

Most of what makes these places special happens at the edges of the day. Charyn turns deep red for the last hour before sunset. Kaindy is glass-still at 8:00 and windy by 15:00. Kolsai is empty in the morning and busy at noon. A single day puts you at all three at the wrong time and costs you nine hours in the car. The 2-day trip covers the same ground with a night in a Saty guesthouse. The driver's room and meals are in our price, so you pay only for your own room, usually with dinner and breakfast. It leaves room for the hike to Kolsai Lake 2.

Heading to Kyrgyzstan next? Skip the drive back altogether. The Almaty to Karakol via Charyn and Kolsai trip crosses at Kegen–Karkara on day two and ends at Karakol, with no backtracking. Check the border status first, because its winter regime for 2026/27 has not been announced.

Questions

Can you do Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy in one day from Almaty?

14 hours and about 600 km is what it takes: leave at 6:00, back around 20:30. That gives you about 1.5 hours at Charyn, 1.5–2 at Kaindy and an hour at Kolsai Lake 1. It is doable for fit adults, but rushed. Families and photographers are better off with the 2-day trip and a night in Saty.

How much is a private Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy day tour?

$340 per minivan for up to six people, $390 for a Land Cruiser for up to four, and $520 for a 16-seat Sprinter. That is the price for the whole car, with an English-speaking driver, fuel and waiting included. Park tickets and the local 4x4 ride to Kaindy are paid in cash on the spot. Budget roughly $15–25 per person.

How far is Kolsai Lake from Almaty?

About 280–300 km, or four to 4.5 hours by car to Saty village, from where Kolsai Lake 1 is 15 km further. Going via Charyn first adds about 1.5 hours of driving. The road is paved most of the way, with gravel sections near Saty and on the lake road.

Do I need a 4x4 to get to Kaindy Lake?

11 km of rough dirt track with stream crossings separates Saty from Kaindy. Visitors normally switch to a local UAZ or 4x4 in Saty and pay the driver in cash, then walk about 1 km to the lake. Your RideKZ minivan or Land Cruiser takes you to Saty and Kolsai. No sedan is offered on this route.

Is the one-day trip worth it, or should I stay overnight?

2 days is better for almost everyone. You get Charyn in the evening glow, Kaindy in calm morning light before the buses, and time for the hike to Kolsai Lake 2. The 2-day private trip starts at $560 per car, with the driver's lodging included. Choose one day only if your dates leave no alternative.

What is the best month for Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy?

September to early October: cool Charyn, golden autumn trees at the lakes and fewer visitors. June to August works too, but Charyn passes 35 °C and Kolsai is crowded at weekends. Before late May, mud can close the Kaindy track. From late October short days mean a return in the dark.

What should I bring for the day?

3 layers. Charyn can be 30 °C while Kaindy at about 2,000 m is 12 °C. Bring trainers or light hiking shoes, a sun hat, sunglasses, cash in tenge for park tickets and the Kaindy ride, your passport for the park gate, and snacks. Water is in the car. Download offline maps, since there is no signal at Kaindy.
