Almaty region in 5 days with a private driver
Five days, about 1,100 km and one car: Almaty and Medeu, Charyn Canyon, the Kaindy and Kolsai lakes, then Altyn-Emel's Singing Dune and Aktau mountains, from $1,100 per car in a minivan for up to 6, $1,300 in a Land Cruiser for up to 4, or $1,800 in a Mercedes Sprinter for up to 16. The price covers the car, an English-speaking driver for all five days, fuel, tolls and the driver's own room and meals. Your hotels, park tickets and meals are paid separately, and we suggest where to sleep at each stop. The route is a loop, so you never drive the same road twice and never return to Almaty just to leave again.

What does a 5-day Almaty itinerary by car look like?
The loop runs anticlockwise: a gentle first day in and above the city, then east to the canyons and lakes, north-west across the Ili valley to the desert, and back to Almaty along the Konaev expressway. Driving days are 1–6 hours, and every long drive ends somewhere worth waking up in.
| Day | Route | Approx. km | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Almaty city, Medeu, Shymbulak | 60 | Almaty |
| 2 | Almaty → Charyn Canyon → Saty | 300 | Saty |
| 3 | Kaindy Lake, Kolsai lakes | 60 | Saty |
| 4 | Saty → Zharkent → Basshi, Singing Dune | 350 | Basshi |
| 5 | Katutau, Aktau → Almaty | 330 | — (or your Almaty hotel) |
Kilometres are map estimates, and the driver's odometer will read differently with side trips. The plan is yours to change: we can swap Day 1 to the end of the trip if you land late, or start with Altyn-Emel and run the loop the other way. If you also want Kyrgyzstan, the 7-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan loop continues from Kolsai over the Kegen border to Issyk-Kul.
What is included in the price, and what do I pay on the spot?
The price is per car for all five days, not per person: $1,100 for a minivan (Hyundai Staria or similar, up to 6), $1,300 for a Land Cruiser Prado or 300 (up to 4), $1,800 for a Mercedes Sprinter (up to 16). Four friends in a Land Cruiser pay $325 each for the transport.
- Included: the car and an English-speaking driver from Day 1 morning to Day 5 drop-off, fuel, tolls, parking, the driver's room and meals in Saty and Basshi, bottled water, child seats on request.
- Not included: your hotels and guesthouses, meals, park tickets (Charyn, Kolsai, Altyn-Emel), the Shymbulak cable car, horses at Kolsai, any local 4x4 shuttle at Kaindy or inside Altyn-Emel, and an optional local guide (from $100 per day).
- Payment: 30% deposit by card link to confirm, the balance to the driver (card or cash, USD or KZT). Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up.
Park tickets are modest. In 2026 Charyn and Kolsai charge about 865 ₸ per person per day plus a vehicle fee (0.6 MRP for a car, 2 MRP for a minibus), and Altyn-Emel has a similar per-person and per-car tariff at its Basshi office. Budget a few thousand tenge per person in total, in cash.
Day by day: what you see and where the time goes
Day 1: Almaty and the mountains above it
Morning in the city: the wooden Zenkov Cathedral in Panfilov Park, the Green Bazaar for dried fruit and kurt, and the Kok-Tobe hill. After lunch the driver takes you 15 km up the gorge to the Medeu high-altitude ice rink (1,690 m), and on to the Shymbulak cable car, which climbs to about 3,200 m at Talgar pass on clear days. Details: Medeu and Shymbulak.
Day 2: Charyn Canyon and on to Saty
Leave at 07:30, east through Shelek to Charyn Canyon (≈200 km, 3 h). Walk the Valley of Castles to the river and back, 2–2.5 hours, before the midday heat. Then 100 km south through Zhalanash to Saty, the village at the edge of Kolsai Lakes National Park, around 1,800 m up.
Day 3: Kaindy and Kolsai
Kaindy first, while the water is still: the lake with a drowned spruce forest, formed by the 1911 earthquake. The last ≈12 km is a gravel gorge track; depending on park rules on the day, you continue in your car, a park shuttle or a local 4x4. Afternoon at Lower Kolsai, with time to walk or ride up toward the second lake. See Kolsai lakes for trail times.
Day 4: Across the Ili valley to Altyn-Emel
The long day, ≈350 km and 5–6 hours. North via Chundzha (hot springs if you want a soak) to Zharkent, with its Chinese-style 19th-century mosque, then west along the Ili to Basshi, the park village. Buy park permits, then the Singing Dune at 5–6 p.m., when the light is golden and the wind is most likely to make it hum.
Day 5: Aktau and Katutau, then home
Early start to the black volcanic Katutau hills and the striped white-and-red Aktau badlands, walked in morning light before the heat. Back through Basshi by early afternoon and 250 km on asphalt to Almaty, arriving 18:00–19:00. Read more on the Altyn-Emel tour page.
Where should we stay each night?
Hotels are not included because guests' tastes differ a lot, but here is what each stop really offers. We are happy to suggest or reserve places we know.
- Almaty (night 1): anything you like, from international five-star hotels near Esentai and Al-Farabi Avenue to boutique hotels in the Golden Square. Stay near Abay or Dostyk avenues to keep the Day 2 start quick.
- Saty (nights 2–3): this is a village, not a resort. Expect family guesthouses with dinner and breakfast from the hosts, a few newer cottage and A-frame complexes, and banyas in some houses. The best rooms go fast on summer weekends; book 2–4 weeks ahead. Cards are not accepted everywhere, so carry tenge.
- Basshi (night 4): the simplest night of the trip. A handful of guesthouses with clean but basic rooms, often shared bathrooms, and home-cooked meals. If comfort matters more than the sunset dune, sleep at the Chundzha hot-spring resorts instead (adds about 1.5 h on Day 5) or switch to the Tamgaly variant below.
Your driver's lodging is our cost, arranged separately, so you never need to book a room for him.
Which car should we choose for 5 days?
Land Cruiser ($1,300, up to 4). The only class we recommend for the full Altyn-Emel day. Inside the park the tracks are 150–200 km of corrugated gravel and rock; the Land Cruiser drives them all and also takes you up the Kaindy track when it is open to private cars.
Minivan ($1,100, up to 6). The most comfortable car for the long asphalt days and luggage. Every road on the loop to the gates of the parks is paved. Inside Altyn-Emel we either drive the graded routes slowly or move you into a Basshi guesthouse 4x4 for the Aktau leg (paid locally). At Kaindy you may use the park shuttle or a local off-roader for the last stretch.
Sprinter ($1,800, up to 16). For families and groups. Same arrangement as the minivan at Kaindy and Altyn-Emel; the park charges a bus tariff at the gates.
Whatever the class, the car is under about 6 years old, with A/C and bottled water.
Is there an easier version with Tamgaly instead of Altyn-Emel?
Yes, and it is the one we suggest for travellers who want every night in a proper hotel after Saty, or for minivan groups who do not want two days of gravel. Days 1–3 stay the same. On Day 4 you drive from Saty back to Almaty (≈300 km, 5 h) with a lunch stop and an evening in the city. Day 5 is the UNESCO-listed petroglyphs of Tamgaly, 170 km north-west of Almaty: Bronze Age sun-headed figures carved on the dark rocks of a small gorge, about 2 hours on foot, and back for dinner. The price per car is the same. Total distance is similar, but there is no gravel and the hotels are better.
When is the best time for this route?
Mid-May to mid-October is the window when the whole loop works. In late May and June the Kolsai valley is green and the steppe flowers; September and early October bring gold larches and spruce, clear air and fewer people at Kaindy. July and August are busy at Kolsai and very hot at Charyn and Aktau (high 30s °C), so the driver starts early on Days 2 and 5.
From November to April, Kaindy's track is usually snowbound and Kolsai is frozen; the Saty guesthouses are quiet and some close. In winter we rework the five days around Almaty: Medeu and Shymbulak skiing, Charyn as a day trip, Tamgaly and Big Almaty Lake in clear weather. Ask us for the winter plan.
Practical notes: Saty and Basshi have mobile signal, but the parks often do not, so download offline maps. Carry tenge for tickets, guesthouses and lunch. Bring a warm layer: Saty nights are 8–12 °C even in summer. Arriving by air? Day 1 can start straight from the Almaty airport with a meet-and-greet sign.

Questions
How much does a 5-day private driver in Almaty cost?
$1,100 per car for five days in a minivan for up to 6 guests, $1,300 in a Land Cruiser for up to 4, or $1,800 in a Mercedes Sprinter for up to 16. That includes the English-speaking driver, fuel, tolls and the driver's own room and meals. Your hotels, meals and park tickets are extra.
What is the best 5-day itinerary around Almaty?
5 days work best as a loop: Almaty and Medeu, then Charyn Canyon to Saty, a full day at Kaindy and Kolsai, across the Ili valley to Altyn-Emel's Singing Dune, and Aktau before returning to Almaty. It covers about 1,100 km and never drives the same road twice.
Are hotels included in the 5-day tour?
No. Hotels are not included for guests, so you choose your own level of comfort. We include the driver's lodging and meals. We suggest where to stay: your choice of Almaty hotel, a family guesthouse or cottage in Saty for two nights, and a simple guesthouse in Basshi or a Chundzha hot-spring resort for the fourth night.
Can I do Charyn, Kolsai and Altyn-Emel without coming back to Almaty?
Yes, about 350 km link Saty and Basshi via Chundzha and Zharkent, a 5–6 hour drive on asphalt. That is the point of the loop: day trips from Almaty would mean roughly 600 km for Charyn and Kolsai and another 500 km for Altyn-Emel, with 14–18 hour days.
Do we need a 4x4 for this route?
Only for Altyn-Emel. The Land Cruiser ($1,300, up to 4) is what we recommend for the full Altyn-Emel day on corrugated gravel. Every road to the park gates is paved, so a minivan or Sprinter works for the rest; at Kaindy and Aktau minivan guests may switch to a park shuttle or local 4x4, paid on the spot.
When is the best time to do this 5-day trip?
Mid-May to mid-October. June and September are the sweet spots: green or golden valleys, mild nights in Saty, and bearable heat at Charyn and Aktau. In winter Kaindy is usually snowbound, so we rebuild the five days around Almaty, Shymbulak, Charyn and Tamgaly.
