Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in 7 days by private car
A 7-day loop of about 1,500 km from Almaty through Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai lakes, the Kegen border, Karakol, the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul and Bishkek, back to Almaty — from $1,700 per car in a minivan for up to six, or $1,950 in a Land Cruiser-class 4x4 for up to four. That price covers the car, an English-speaking driver for all seven days, fuel, both border crossings and the driver's own room and meals. You choose the hotels and guesthouses, or we suggest them; you pay those directly. It is a road trip with a chauffeur rather than a group tour: no fixed bus, no strangers, stops when you want them.

What does the 7-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan loop look like?
The loop is built around one idea: go out through the small eastern border at Kegen–Karkara, which puts Charyn and Kolsai on the way rather than on separate day trips, and come back through the 24-hour Korday crossing near Bishkek. That way nothing is driven twice. Driving days run 3–7 hours; the longest is day 2 (Kolsai to Karakol via the border) and day 5 (south shore to Bishkek).
| Day | Route | Approx. km | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Almaty → Charyn Canyon → Saty | 300 | Saty guesthouse |
| 2 | Kaindy, Kolsai → Kegen border → Karakol | 320 | Karakol |
| 3 | Karakol, Jeti-Oguz | 80 | Karakol |
| 4 | South shore: Barskoon, Skazka → Bokonbaev area | 170 | yurt camp or guesthouse |
| 5 | Balykchy, Burana Tower → Bishkek | 300 | Bishkek |
| 6 | Ala-Archa gorge, Bishkek | 90 | Bishkek |
| 7 | Bishkek → Korday → Almaty or Almaty airport | 240–260 | — |
Kilometres are estimates from maps and will vary with side trips. If you only have two days for the Kazakh part and want to finish in Karakol, the shorter Almaty to Karakol via Charyn and Kolsai trip covers days 1–2 alone.
Is the Kegen border open for this route — and what is the winter version?
The whole summer loop depends on Kegen–Karkara, a daytime rural post. In summer 2026 the Kyrgyz side worked 08:00–21:00 Bishkek time (one hour ahead of Almaty). Historically the crossing ran from about mid-May to October and closed in winter; Kazakhstan ratified a 24-hour regime in January 2026, but no winter schedule for 2026/27 had been announced as of 13 October 2026. We check the post the day before day 2 and plan to reach it by mid-afternoon. Background and timeline: Kegen–Karkara border.
Winter variant (roughly November–April), via Korday both ways:
- Day 1: Charyn Canyon as a return day trip from Almaty (Kolsai and Kaindy are snowbound and the Kaindy track is usually impassable).
- Day 2: Almaty → Korday → Bishkek, with Burana Tower on the way east or a city afternoon.
- Day 3: Bishkek → Boom gorge → north shore → Karakol (about 400 km, a full day in winter light).
- Days 4–5: Karakol — skiing at Karakol ski base or Jeti-Oguz and the Skazka canyon on a clear day.
- Day 6: Karakol → north shore → Bishkek.
- Day 7: Bishkek → Korday → Almaty.
The price stays the same per car. Winter tyres are standard on our cars from November, and we drive the Kegen plateau and the Boom gorge in daylight only.
Which car should we choose for 7 days?
Two classes are offered on this loop, both per car for the full seven days:
- Minivan — $1,700. Hyundai Staria or Toyota Alphard class, up to six guests with luggage. The sensible choice for families and groups of four to six. It handles every paved section and the Saty road in dry weather.
- 4x4 — $1,950. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or 300, up to four guests. Worth it if you want the Kaindy track without changing into a local jeep, if rain is forecast on the gravel stretches near Saty and the Kegen post, or if you plan side trips up rough valleys around Karakol.
Sedans and Sprinters are not offered for this tour: the unpaved approach roads around Kolsai and the last stretch before the Kegen post are hard on a low car, and a 16-seat Sprinter cannot reach Kaindy at all. Larger groups can book two cars.
For a party of four in the minivan, the transport works out at $425 per person for the week; with six it is about $285.
How does one car cross two countries legally?
Our cross-border cars are cleared for international routes, so you keep one car and one driver for all seven days, and your luggage stays in the boot. At each border you walk through passport control with your hand luggage while the driver takes the car through the vehicle lane; at Kegen it rarely takes long, at Korday it can take one to three hours on Friday and Sunday evenings. The Kyrgyz part of the trip — hotels, Karakol and south-shore advice, extra days — is coordinated with our sister service RideKG, which runs transfers and tours inside Kyrgyzstan every day.
Visas: citizens of the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and many other countries enter both countries visa-free for short stays. Check that your Kazakh visa-free stay or visa allows exit and re-entry, since you return to Almaty on day 7. Reports conflict on whether a Kyrgyz e-visa is accepted at Kegen; if you depend on one, tell us and we will run the winter routing via Korday instead.
What will we see each day?
Kazakhstan: Charyn, Kaindy, Kolsai
Charyn's Valley of Castles is a 3 km walk between red walls to the river, best before 11:00 when the light is low and the trail is cool. Kaindy is the lake formed by the 1911 earthquake, with drowned spruce trunks standing in turquoise water; the last 11 km are a dirt track, done in your 4x4 or in a local park vehicle from the minivan. Kolsai Lake 1 sits at about 1,800 m, a flat lakeside walk from the car park. Nights in Saty are in family guesthouses: simple, clean, home cooking, cool even in July.
Kyrgyzstan: Karakol and the south shore
Karakol has a wooden Dungan mosque and an Orthodox cathedral built without nails, plus the Przhevalsky memorial on the lake. Jeti-Oguz, 30 km away, is a wall of red sandstone with a valley of spruce behind it. The south shore is the quiet side of Issyk-Kul: the Barskoon waterfall, the eroded red formations of Skazka ("Fairy Tale") canyon and, near Bokonbaev, eagle-hunting demonstrations and yurt camps on the water. Day 5 runs west past Balykchy to the 11th-century Burana Tower and its field of stone balbals before Bishkek. Day 6 is an easy morning in Ala-Archa National Park, 40 km south of Bishkek, then the city's Osh bazaar.
What is included, and what do we pay separately?
- Included: the car and an English-speaking driver for 7 days, fuel, tolls, parking, both border crossings, waiting at every stop, the driver's accommodation and meals, bottled water, child seats on request.
- Not included: your hotels, guesthouses and yurt camps; your meals; entry fees at Charyn, Kolsai, Ala-Archa and other parks (cash, local currency); the Kaindy park vehicle if you are in a minivan; eagle-hunting shows.
- Optional: a local guide from $100 per day for the whole trip or just for Karakol and the south shore.
Payment: a 30% deposit by card link secures the dates; the rest is paid to the driver on day 1 or at the end, by card or cash in USD or tenge. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. If Kegen is closed on your date we switch to the Korday routing at the same price, or refund the deposit in full.
Practical tips: money, signal, altitude, food
- Money. Carry tenge for Charyn, Kolsai and Saty, and Kyrgyz som for Karakol and the south shore. There is no ATM or exchange at the Kegen post; change som in Almaty. Cards work in Karakol and Bishkek hotels, rarely in guesthouses.
- Signal. Mobile data drops out on the Kegen plateau and around the post for about an hour, and is patchy on the south shore between villages.
- Altitude and weather. Saty and Kegen are at 1,800–2,000 m. Pack a fleece and rain shell even in August; Charyn the same morning can be above 30 °C.
- Food. Lunch on day 2 is in Kegen, the last proper café before Karakol. Karakol is known for ashlyan-fu, cold Dungan noodles. Vegetarian food exists but is basic outside Karakol and Bishkek; tell your driver and he will pick the cafés.
- Time. Clocks go forward one hour entering Kyrgyzstan and back on day 7.

Questions
How much does a 7-day Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan private tour cost?
$1,700 per car for a minivan carrying up to six, or $1,950 for a 4x4 carrying up to four, for all seven days. That covers the car, an English-speaking driver, fuel, tolls, both borders and the driver's lodging and meals. Your hotels, meals and park tickets are paid separately.
Can you visit Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in one week?
7 days is enough for the highlights of south-east Kazakhstan and the Issyk-Kul region if you loop rather than backtrack: out via Charyn, Kolsai and the Kegen border to Karakol, then along the south shore to Bishkek and back to Almaty via Korday. Expect three to seven hours of driving on most days.
Is the same car and driver used in both countries?
1 car and 1 driver for the whole loop. Our cross-border cars are cleared for international routes, so there is no change of vehicle at the border. You walk through passport control with hand luggage while the driver takes the car through the vehicle lane.
Can we do this trip in winter?
Yes, with a different route: from about November to April the Kegen crossing may be closed and Kolsai is snowbound, so we go via Korday both ways, see Charyn as a day trip from Almaty and spend two days in Karakol, which suits skiers. The price per car stays the same.
Do I need a visa for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan?
0 visas for most EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passports, which get short visa-free stays in both countries. Check that your Kazakh stay allows exit and re-entry, since the tour returns to Almaty. If you rely on a Kyrgyz e-visa, tell us: reports conflict on whether Kegen accepts it.
Are hotels included in the price?
No — the $1,700 or $1,950 covers transport, the driver and his own lodging. That keeps you free to pick a lakeside yurt camp or a boutique hotel in Bishkek. We suggest places at each stop and can reserve them on request; you pay them directly.
