Altyn-Emel by Land Cruiser: Singing Dune, Aktau and Katutau

Basshi, the gateway village of Altyn-Emel National Park, is about 250 km and 4 hours from Almaty, and a private Land Cruiser day with an English-speaking driver costs from $450 for the whole car (up to 4 guests). That covers fuel, tolls and roughly 150–200 km of gravel inside the park to the Singing Dune and the white-and-red Aktau and black Katutau mountains. Be warned: done in one day it is a 16–17 hour outing, so we usually suggest sleeping in Basshi and splitting it over two days. Park tickets are bought on the spot at the park office in Basshi.

How long is the drive from Almaty to Altyn-Emel?

From central Almaty to Basshi is about 250 km, and in normal traffic your driver needs about 4 hours. The first 70 km to Konaev (the town still signposted as Kapchagay) run on the new toll expressway, which is included in our price. After the reservoir the road heads north-east across open steppe, climbs over the low Altyn-Emel pass and drops into the Ili valley. The road to Basshi itself is good asphalt; the hard part starts at the park gate.

The real distances are inside the park. The Singing Dune and the Aktau mountains lie in opposite directions from Basshi, so you come back through the village between them:

LegSurfaceTime one way
Almaty → Basshiasphalt, toll section to Konaev≈4 h
Basshi → Singing Dunegravel, washboard≈1 h
Basshi → Katutau → Aktaugravel, rocky in places≈1.5 h
Basshi → Almatyasphalt≈4 h

Add it up and you have 9–10 hours in the car before anyone has walked a step. That is why the honest answer to “can I do Altyn-Emel in a day?” is yes, but only if you leave at 5 a.m.

What does a one-day Altyn-Emel trip look like?

If you only have one day, this is the schedule that works. Your driver adjusts it to the season and the light.

It is a long day and the light at Aktau is flat at 3 p.m. You will see everything, but you will not see it at its best. If you are on a tight schedule, you can drop Katutau and gain an hour.

Why sleep in Basshi instead?

Two days changes the trip completely. Arrive at Basshi around midday, see the Singing Dune in the late afternoon when the sand turns gold and the wind usually picks up (that is when it hums), and sleep in the village. Next morning you reach Aktau at 8–9 a.m., before the heat, when the low sun makes the striped clay glow. Then Katutau, and you are back in Almaty by early evening.

Basshi has a handful of family guesthouses: simple rooms, often with shared bathrooms, home-cooked dinner and breakfast. Travellers reported prices from about 7,000 ₸ per person in 2026, but this is not a hotel stay and nothing here is luxurious. Book ahead in May and September. Your guesthouse is not included in our price; the driver's room and meals are, and we can recommend a house we know is clean. We quote the two-day version per request, because it depends on the night and the route on day two.

If you have more time, Altyn-Emel works best as part of a longer loop. Our Almaty region in 5 days ends here after Charyn and the Kolsai lakes, so you never drive the Almaty–Basshi road twice.

What will I see: Singing Dune, Aktau, Katutau and Besshatyr?

The Singing Dune

A single dune about 150 m high and some 3 km long, standing alone between the Greater and Lesser Kalkan ridges, about 2 km from the Ili river. In dry, windy weather the moving sand makes a low hum, like an aircraft far away. Do not expect it on demand: on a still or damp day it is silent. The climb is steep, soft sand. Walk the ridge, not the face, and stay on the marked path.

Aktau, the white mountains

Not mountains so much as eroded badlands of lake clay, 25–30 million years old, in bands of white, cream, orange and brick red. Fossils of giant rhinos, crocodiles and turtles have been found here. There is no shade and no water. In July a walk at midday is genuinely dangerous.

Katutau

Black and brown volcanic hills on the way to Aktau, with twisted lava forms. The track there is the roughest in the park, which is where the Land Cruiser earns its price.

Besshatyr burial mounds

A Saka royal necropolis from the 6th–4th centuries BC near the Ili, with burial mounds up to 17 m high and a ring of standing stones. It lies in the south-west of the park, reached from the Shengeldy side rather than from Basshi. In one day you cannot fit it in with Aktau; on a two-day trip we add it on the way in or out.

On the way you will likely pass the 700-year-old willow near Basshi, a popular short stop.

Do I need a permit, and what are the park rules?

Yes. Every visitor and every car needs a ticket, bought at the national park office in Basshi (Mametova St 2) before you drive any route. Your driver handles the paperwork; you pay the fees, which are not included in our price. As of a 2024 tariff, an adult paid 1,170 ₸ and a passenger car 1,307 ₸. Since an October 2024 order, fees are set in MRP (the monthly calculation index), so expect slightly higher figures in 2026, still a few thousand tenge per person in total. The office has a lunch break and may take cash only, so bring tenge.

The rules that matter in practice:

The park sets these rules and changes them. Check the official park site or ask us the week before.

Will I see kulans and gazelles?

Probably. Altyn-Emel is one of the great success stories of Central Asian conservation. The kulan, a wild ass close to extinction in Kazakhstan in the 20th century, was reintroduced here. Recent counts put the herd at over 2,500, and in spring and autumn you often see groups grazing from the road between Basshi and Aktau. You will also see goitered gazelles (jeyran), which run in small herds, and in spring argali on the ridges. Binoculars help. The best times are early morning and late afternoon, one more reason to sleep in Basshi. Your driver will stop the car and switch off the engine; please stay inside if animals are close.

Why is this a Land Cruiser trip only?

We price Altyn-Emel only in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or 300, for up to 4 guests. Inside the park the tracks are unpaved, corrugated into washboard and rocky on the way to Katutau, and park rules restrict regrading. A sedan can technically reach the dune after the track has been graded in dry weather, but 150–200 km of washboard in one is miserable and risky. In April or late October the clay toward Aktau turns to mud after rain. The Land Cruiser's suspension, clearance and big tank also mean fuel is never a worry: the only pump in Basshi sometimes runs dry, so your driver fills up in Konaev.

For groups of 5–8, we send two Land Cruisers. For a gentler day nearer the city, the rock art at Tamgaly works in any car class.

When is the best time to go, and what should I bring?

April to early June and September to October. In spring the steppe is green, sometimes red with tulips and poppies, and kulans are active. In autumn the light is soft and the heat has gone. July and August reach the high 30s °C in the Ili valley, with no shade at Aktau; go only with a dawn start. Winter is possible on dry, clear days, but daylight is short and the one-day version barely fits.

Toilets: in Basshi and at the guesthouses; on the routes, there is basic or no infrastructure. For other ideas, see Charyn Canyon or book a car with driver by the day in Almaty.

Questions

How much is a private tour to Altyn-Emel from Almaty?

$450 for the whole Land Cruiser, for up to 4 guests, on a one-day return trip with an English-speaking driver. Fuel, tolls and the gravel driving inside the park are included. Park tickets (a few thousand tenge per person) and lunch are paid locally. A two-day version with a night in Basshi is quoted on request.

Can you do Altyn-Emel in one day from Almaty?

16–17 hours is what a one-day trip really takes: about 8 hours on asphalt to Basshi and back, plus 3–4 hours of gravel inside the park and time on foot. It is possible with a 5 a.m. start, but tiring, and Aktau is seen in the midday light. We recommend one night in Basshi.

How far is the Singing Dune from Almaty?

About 300 km: roughly 250 km of asphalt to the park office in Basshi, then about an hour on gravel to the dune. Plan on 5 hours from your hotel. The dune and Aktau lie in opposite directions from Basshi, so seeing both means driving back through the village.

Where do I buy Altyn-Emel park tickets?

At the park office in Basshi, before you enter any route. Your driver takes you there and handles the registration. The fee is per person plus a car charge. A 2024 tariff showed 1,170 ₸ per adult and 1,307 ₸ per car; 2026 rates are MRP-based and slightly higher. Bring tenge in cash.

Does the Singing Dune really sing?

Sometimes. The dune, about 150 m high, hums only when the sand is dry and the wind moves it, which is more likely in the afternoon. On still or damp days it is silent. Sliding down the slope can also start the sound, but please follow the ranger rules on where to walk.

Do I need a 4x4 for Altyn-Emel?

150–200 km of corrugated gravel inside the park is why we offer only a Land Cruiser for this trip. In dry weather a car can reach the dune, but the tracks to Katutau and Aktau are rocky, and after rain the clay turns to mud. Rental firms often forbid park roads in ordinary cars.

Where can I stay near Altyn-Emel?

Basshi, the park village, has a few family guesthouses with simple rooms, home cooking and sometimes shared bathrooms, from about 7,000 ₸ per person in 2026. There are no upscale hotels. Camping is allowed only at designated spots, not at the Singing Dune. We can recommend a guesthouse and include your driver's room in our price.
