Kazakhstan for Indian travellers: Almaty by private car
Indian passport holders can visit Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days. Delhi to Almaty is a non-stop flight of about 3.5 hours, and a five-day Almaty trip with a private car and English-speaking driver costs from $600 (≈₹57,450) for the whole car in a sedan, or $760 (≈₹72,800) in a minivan for a family of six. Those prices are per car, not per person. They cover the airport pickup and drop, Charyn Canyon, a day in the city with a guide, and transfers to Shymbulak for snow. This guide covers the details that package tours from India skip: which flights land when, how to eat vegetarian or Jain on the road, which months bring snow and which bring cool summer air, and how to pay with an Indian card. Rupee figures use 1 USD = ₹95.76, the rate on 12 October 2026. Your bank's card rate will differ a little.

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Kazakhstan in 2026?
No, not for a holiday. Indian passport holders may stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 14 days per visit, with a ceiling of 42 days in any 180-day period (as of October 2026). The visa-free stay covers tourism, visits to friends and short business meetings. It does not cover paid work or study. Immigration at Almaty airport usually asks for nothing beyond your passport, but keep your return ticket and hotel booking on your phone in case they do.
- Longer than 14 days? You need an e-visa from the official Visa and Migration Portal (vmp.gov.kz) before you fly. For a tourist e-visa you usually need an invitation number from a registered Kazakh host, so leave at least two weeks. An e-visa is valid only for entry through Almaty or Astana airports.
- Adding Bishkek or Issyk-Kul? Kyrgyzstan does require a visa for Indian citizens, normally an e-visa. Apply before you leave India and cross at the Korday post, which accepts e-visas. A short trip to Kyrgyzstan does not reset your Kazakh 14 days. See Almaty to Bishkek by private car.
- Your passport needs at least six months of validity left. Rules change, so check with the Kazakh embassy in New Delhi a week before you fly.
Which flights go direct from Delhi and Mumbai to Almaty?
Delhi: Air Astana, Kazakhstan's national carrier, flies Delhi–Almaty non-stop every day. Some weeks in autumn 2026 show two flights a day. The flight takes about 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 35 minutes. IndiGo has also run Delhi–Almaty in recent seasons, so check its current timetable.
Mumbai: Air Astana has flown Mumbai–Almaty non-stop since April 2025, about three times a week on A320/A321 aircraft. The flight takes about 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours. In October 2026 the Mumbai departure is at 05:50, which puts you in Almaty mid-morning. Goa: SCAT has flown Goa–Almaty, and FlyArystan has flown Goa–Astana. Both are mainly winter flights, and their schedules change by season.
From the rest of India, connect in Delhi, or fly via Dubai, Sharjah or Tashkent. Almaty is on UTC+5, only 30 minutes behind IST, so you lose almost no time to jet lag. All international flights use the new Terminal 2. Several flights from India and the Gulf land between midnight and dawn. A pre-booked Almaty airport transfer costs $40 (≈₹3,850) for a sedan or $60 (≈₹5,750) for a minivan, plus $10 between 23:00 and 06:00. Your driver waits with a name sign and gives you 90 minutes free after landing. The Almaty airport guide compares this with Yandex Go and the bus.
What is the weather in Almaty month by month: when is the snow?
Most Indian visitors come for one of two seasons: snow in winter or cool mountain air in summer.
| Months | Almaty city | Mountains (Medeu, Shymbulak) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Feb | about −10 to +2 °C, dry, sometimes smoggy | reliable snow, −5 to −15 °C | first snow, skiing, ice skating, snow photos |
| Mar | 0 to 12 °C, slush in town | good spring snow | skiing in softer conditions, fewer crowds |
| Apr–May | 12 to 25 °C, blossom, some rain | snow high up, green below | Charyn Canyon, city walks |
| Jun–Aug | 25 to 33 °C, dry | 15 to 20 °C, wildflowers | a summer escape, lakes, Kolsai, the Shymbulak cable car |
| Sep–Oct | 12 to 25 °C, golden trees | first snow on the peaks | photography, honeymoons, comfortable day trips |
| Nov | 0 to 8 °C, grey | resort prepares to open | the quietest month |
Shymbulak's ski season usually runs from early December to April. In 2025 it opened on 6 December. Snow in the city itself comes and goes, but at 2,260 m on the mountain it is guaranteed in January and February. In May and June, when much of North India is at 40–45 °C, Almaty's evenings are around 15 °C and the mountains above the city are green. That makes it a three-and-a-half-hour summer escape from Delhi. The figures above are typical ranges, not forecasts.
Can I find vegetarian and Jain food in Almaty?
In the city, yes. On the road, you need to plan. Kazakh food is built on meat: beshbarmak, plov, shashlik and horse-meat sausage. Vegetarians eat well in Almaty and adequately everywhere else. Here is what works:
- Indian restaurants in Almaty. Several restaurants in the centre cook North Indian food and say they can prepare Jain meals on request. Names you will hear include Eastern Gate, Magic Masala on Abay Avenue, Spice Mantra on Tole Bi Street and Tandoor. Most also serve meat, so ask about separate utensils if that matters to you. Your driver can phone ahead in Russian. Phone the day before to confirm hours and Jain options; we can do this for you.
- Ordinary cafés. Georgian, Uzbek and Korean places have salads, cheese breads (khachapuri), lentil soup and vegetable dishes. Useful Russian phrases: bez myasa (without meat), bez luka, bez chesnoka (without onion and garlic) and bez yaits (without eggs). Show them on your phone.
- Day trips. Roadside cafés on the way to Charyn and Kolsai serve bread, tomato and cucumber salads, tea and sometimes vegetable lagman. Jain travellers should carry khakhra, thepla or other dry snacks from home. The car carries bottled water, and your driver will stop wherever you want to eat a packed lunch.
- Hotels. International hotels serve vegetarian breakfasts, and most will make simple Jain meals if you ask when you book.
- Groceries. Magnum and Small supermarkets stock rice, dal-style lentils, paneer-like cheeses, fruit and yoghurt. The Green Bazaar is the best place for dried fruit and nuts.
What does a 5-day Almaty itinerary with a private car cost?
Below is the plan we suggest for a first visit from India. It has one arrival day, three full days out and an easy last day. Each part is a separate fixed-price booking, so you can drop or swap any of them. Prices are per car. Rupee figures use ₹95.76 per dollar (12 October 2026), rounded to the nearest ₹50.
| Day | What | Sedan (up to 3) | Minivan (up to 6) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport pickup with name sign | $40 ≈ ₹3,850 | $60 ≈ ₹5,750 |
| 2 | City, Kok-Tobe, Medeu with an English-speaking guide and car | $260 ≈ ₹24,900 | $300 ≈ ₹28,750 |
| 3 | Charyn Canyon day trip | $160 ≈ ₹15,300 | $200 ≈ ₹19,150 |
| 4 | Shymbulak: transfer up and back to the gondola at Medeu | $100 ≈ ₹9,600 | $140 ≈ ₹13,400 |
| 5 | Shopping or free morning, airport drop | $40 ≈ ₹3,850 | $60 ≈ ₹5,750 |
| Total per car | $600 ≈ ₹57,450 | $760 ≈ ₹72,800 |
For two people in a sedan, that comes to about ₹28,700 each for every ride and guided day, all private. Add $10 per car to an airport ride between 23:00 and 06:00. Not included: hotels, meals, park tickets at Charyn (a few hundred rupees per person) and the Shymbulak gondola and ski passes. Details are on the car with guide, Charyn Canyon and Shymbulak transfer pages.
Want to see the lakes and the desert too? The 5-day Almaty region loop keeps one car and one driver for all five days: Charyn, Kaindy, Kolsai and Altyn-Emel, with two nights in Saty. It costs $1,100 (≈₹1,05,350) in a minivan or $1,300 (≈₹1,24,500) in a Land Cruiser, and it includes the driver's own room and meals. It runs from mid-May to mid-October.
How does a private car compare with a package tour from India?
Indian travel sites sell Almaty packages from about ₹36,000 per person for 5 nights. Read the inclusions. In the typical 2026 listing, flights are excluded, the hotel is a three-star, and all tours and transfers are seat-in-coach, which means a shared bus that collects guests from several hotels on a fixed schedule. Charyn Canyon is often not included at all. That suits some travellers. A private car changes three things:
- Your timing. On the Charyn day you leave at 7:00 and reach the canyon before the heat and the coaches. On the Shymbulak day you can come down when the children are tired, not when the coach leaves.
- Your hotel. You choose any hotel, from the Ritz-Carlton on Al-Farabi Avenue to a boutique place near Panfilov Park, and the car picks you up at the door.
- Your family. Grandparents, children and luggage stay in one vehicle. Child seats are free if you ask.
Many Indian travellers combine the two: they book flights and hotels themselves, or through an agent, and book the car with us. We are happy to work alongside your travel agent.
Is Almaty good for a honeymoon or a family holiday?
Honeymoon. Almaty gives you snow-capped mountains a 40-minute drive from a café city. The flight is short, the visa is not needed and the hotels are excellent. Couples like these moments best:
- the Medeu gondola up to Shymbulak in clear winter weather, and the upper lifts toward Talgar Pass at about 3,200 m;
- Kok-Tobe at sunset, with the city lights below;
- Charyn Canyon in the soft light of October;
- a wine tasting in the Assa valley with the driver doing the driving.
If you want to see sunset and sunrise at the canyon, the two-day lake trips include a night in a glamping cabin or guesthouse. September–October and January–February are the most photogenic months.
Families. Book the minivan (Hyundai Staria or Toyota Alphard, up to 6 guests). It holds four large suitcases plus cabin bags, and child seats are free on request. For extended families or two families together, a Mercedes Sprinter takes up to 16: $120 (≈₹11,500) from the airport and $360 (≈₹34,450) for Charyn. With small children, start days later and keep the drives short. The Medeu–Shymbulak day and the city are easy. Charyn is a 10–11 hour day, so consider it only if the children are 6 or older. Our private driver in Almaty day rate ($160 sedan, $200 minivan for 8 hours) lets you set the pace with rest breaks at the hotel.
How do I pay from India, and what about money on the trip?
- Day trips and multi-day tours: you pay a 30% deposit online with a Visa or Mastercard through a secure card link, and the balance goes to the driver. Before you travel, turn on international online transactions for your card in your bank's app; Indian banks often keep them off by default.
- Airport and Shymbulak transfers: you pay nothing in advance. Pay the driver at the end, by card or in cash, in US dollars or tenge.
- Cards in Kazakhstan: Visa and Mastercard work in hotels, malls and most restaurants in Almaty. Do not count on RuPay or UPI. Bring a forex card or a credit card with low foreign-exchange fees.
- Cash: bring clean US dollar notes from India and change them in town, at a bank or exchange office. Rates there are better than at the airport. You will want tenge for park tickets, bazaars and roadside cafés.
- SIM card: buy an eSIM before you fly, or a Beeline or Kcell SIM at the airport. Download 2GIS, the map app locals use.
Book by WhatsApp at +996 777 889 992 (8:00–23:00 Almaty time, which is 8:30–23:30 IST). We reply in about 15 minutes with a fixed price. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. Every trip comes with a licensed, vetted, English-speaking driver. Planning skiing in detail? See ski resorts near Almaty.

14 days per visit, with a maximum of 42 days in any 180-day period, as of October 2026. Visa-free entry covers tourism and short visits, not work or study.
