Bishkek to Almaty airport: a transfer timed to your flight
Bishkek to Almaty airport is about 260 km and 4.5–5 hours including the Ak-Zhol/Korday border, from $200 for the whole car with an English-speaking driver. Most travellers who explore Kyrgyzstan still fly home from Almaty, because that is where the long-haul flights are, so this is the last leg of a great many trips. The simple rule: for an international flight, leave Bishkek eight hours before the departure time printed on your ticket, read on a Bishkek clock. Pickups between 23:00 and 06:00 add $20.

Why fly home from Almaty instead of Bishkek?
Almaty International Airport handled more than 11 million passengers in 2024, several times Bishkek's traffic, and it is the hub of Air Astana. From ALA there are direct flights to Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, Delhi, Seoul, Bangkok and a long list of Chinese cities, plus Warsaw since May 2026 and Tokyo announced for later in the year. Bishkek's Manas airport, whose code changed from FRU to BSZ in August 2025, serves mostly Russia, Turkey, the Gulf and Central Asia, with very little non-stop service to Western Europe or East Asia. Many travellers therefore book a round trip to Almaty and spend the middle of the holiday in Kyrgyzstan. If your airline does fly from Manas, compare: no border crossing is a real advantage, and a Bishkek hotel is 30 minutes from the terminal.
When should I leave Bishkek for my flight from Almaty?
Your ticket shows Almaty time, which is one hour behind Bishkek. We work back from the departure like this: three hours at the airport for an international flight (security at the entrance of Terminal 2, check-in, passport control), five hours of road and border, and one hour of buffer. Convert to a Bishkek clock and the shortcut is flight time minus 8 hours. On Sundays, the last day of a Kazakh holiday weekend, mid-July to late August, and from December to February, use minus 9 hours.

* Pickup falls in the 23:00–06:00 night window: +$20. For a domestic flight from Almaty, two hours at the airport is enough, so use minus 7 hours. Send us your flight number and we confirm the exact time; for a flight in the late afternoon we also add 30 minutes for Almaty's evening rush.
What about very early flights from Almaty?
Many long-haul departures leave ALA between 02:00 and 08:00, and they are the trickiest to time. You have two sensible options.
Drive overnight, straight to the terminal
The border is open 24/7 and usually at its quietest after midnight, so a 22:00 pickup in Bishkek for a 06:00 flight is routine. You arrive with time to spare and nothing to rebook. The downside is a night without proper sleep before a long flight.
Cross by day, sleep near the airport
Take a daytime Bishkek to Almaty transfer, have dinner in the city, and use a short city to airport ride in the morning. Several hotels sit within 10 minutes of the terminal. This is what we recommend from December to February, when fog and ice on the Korday pass make a 3:00 border run less predictable, and for families with small children. It also removes the border from the equation if a Sunday queue builds up.
What if the border queue is long?
Traffic at Ak-Zhol/Korday is driven by Kazakh residents returning from Bishkek and Lake Issyk-Kul, so the direction towards Almaty is busiest on Sunday afternoons and evenings, on the last day of long weekends (Nauryz in March, early May, mid-December) and from late July to mid-August. On those days the car lane into Kazakhstan can take two hours or more, while foot passengers clear in 30–90 minutes.
- The evening before, your driver checks how the queue looks and may suggest an earlier pickup.
- If the car lane stalls on the day, we can switch to a border swap: you walk across with your bags (roughly 300 metres) and a second driver meets you on the Korday side, then takes you to the airport. We arrange this only when it is needed, and there is no extra charge when it is our call.
- Kazakh entry control is slower than Kyrgyz exit and bags are scanned more often. Keep your passport, ticket and hotel or flight details to hand.
Patterns and step-by-step are in our Korday border guide.
Which way does the driver go to the airport?
About 30 minutes from central Bishkek to the Ak-Zhol checkpoint, then roughly 240 km on the A2 through Korday, over the low Korday pass (around 1,100 m), past Uzynagash and Kaskelen. The highway reaches Almaty from the west and the airport is on the north-eastern edge of the city, so drivers take the northern ring roads rather than crossing the centre. Two slow points to know about:
- Kaskelen road works. Widening of the highway from four to eight lanes between km 19 and km 27 began in July 2026. Expect 20–30 extra minutes at peak hours as of October 2026.
- Almaty rush hour. Weekdays 17:00–19:30 the last 40 km can take more than an hour.
Uzynagash, about 80 km before the airport, is the best place for a meal and a clean toilet stop. Spend or change your remaining som in Bishkek or at the Korday booths; som is hard to sell in Almaty.
Passports, stamps and your Kazakh days
You will be stamped into Kazakhstan at Korday and out again at the airport a few hours later; officers are used to it. Two things are worth checking a week before you travel:
- Kazakh visa-free days. Many nationalities get 30 days per entry and Indian citizens 14. If you spent time in Kazakhstan before Kyrgyzstan, add up your days: for many passports there is also a 90-in-180 limit, and a short trip to Bishkek does not necessarily reset it.
- Kyrgyz stay limit. Since 31 December 2025 US, UK, EU, Australian, Japanese and Korean citizens may stay 30 days within any 60. An overstay means a fine at Ak-Zhol, which is the last thing you want with a flight to catch.
Keep an offline copy of your e-ticket; Kazakh officers sometimes ask about onward travel.
How much is the transfer, and what is included?
Fixed per car: sedan (Toyota Camry or similar, up to 3 guests) $200, minivan (Hyundai Staria / Toyota Alphard or similar, up to 6) $260, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 4x4 $290, Mercedes Sprinter for up to 16 $390. Pickups between 23:00 and 06:00 add $20. One driver, in a car cleared for international routes, takes you the whole way. Included: an English-speaking driver, fuel, tolls, airport parking, waiting at the border, stops up to an hour, bottled water, child seats and ski or board bags. You pay the driver at the terminal in US dollars, tenge or som, cash or card, with no deposit; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. Questions
How early should I leave Bishkek for a flight from Almaty?
8 hours before your flight's departure time, read on a Bishkek clock, for an international flight on a normal day: a 15:00 Almaty departure means a 07:00 pickup. Use 9 hours on Sundays, holiday weekends, in high summer and in winter. Almaty is one hour behind Bishkek, and your ticket shows Almaty time.
How much is a transfer from Bishkek to Almaty airport?
$200 for a sedan for up to three guests, priced per car. A minivan for six is $260, a Land Cruiser Prado $290 and a 16-seat Sprinter $390. Pickups between 23:00 and 06:00 add $20. An English-speaking driver, fuel, border waiting and airport parking are included, and you pay at the terminal.
How long does it take from Bishkek to Almaty airport?
4.5–5 hours for about 260 km on a normal day, including the Ak-Zhol/Korday border. On Sunday evenings and at the end of Kazakh holidays the queue into Kazakhstan can add two hours or more. Because Almaty clocks are an hour behind, the trip looks an hour shorter on paper.
Can I travel overnight to catch an early flight from Almaty?
Yes: 24/7 opening at Korday makes it routine, and night queues are usually short. For a 06:00 flight, leave Bishkek around 22:00 the evening before; the $20 night surcharge applies. From December to February we recommend crossing by day and sleeping near Almaty airport instead.
What happens if the border queue makes me late for my flight?
1 hour of buffer is already built into every pickup time, and the driver checks the queue the evening before. If the car lane stalls, we can switch you to a border swap: you walk across and a Kazakh car waits on the other side. On busy Sundays, choosing an earlier pickup is the best protection.
Should I fly from Manas instead of Almaty?
0 border crossings and a 30-minute drive make Manas (BSZ) the easier choice if your airline flies from there. For most long-haul trips to Europe, Korea, Japan or India, however, Almaty has the direct flights and often the better fares, and this transfer is the simplest way to reach them.
