Bishkek to Almaty by private car
Bishkek to Almaty is 240 km and usually 4–5 hours including the Ak-Zhol/Korday border, from $190 for the whole car with an English-speaking driver. You can keep the same car from your Bishkek hotel to your Almaty door, or take a border swap from $130 and change to a second car on the Korday side. Clocks go back one hour as you enter Kazakhstan, so on paper the trip takes 3–4 hours. The part that deserves planning is entering Kazakhstan, not leaving Kyrgyzstan.

One car all the way or a border swap from Bishkek?
On both options you walk through the two passport halls yourself; no passenger stays in a car at Korday. The difference is whether your car and your bags come with you.
Same car, door to door: $190 sedan, $250 minivan
Your driver picks you up at your Bishkek hotel, drops you at the Ak-Zhol pedestrian terminal, drives the car through the vehicle lane and collects you past the Kazakh post. Your luggage never leaves the trunk, and the same driver takes you to your Almaty address. Choose this with children, older travellers, skis, or anything you would rather not carry: carpets, felt, or bags of dried fruit from Osh Bazaar.
Border swap: $130 sedan, $180 minivan
A Kyrgyz driver takes you the 20 km or so from Bishkek to Ak-Zhol (about 30 minutes). You walk both posts with your bags, roughly 300 metres, and a second driver with a name sign is waiting on the Korday side for the 220 km to Almaty. Because no car has to queue to enter Kazakhstan, this is usually the faster choice on Sunday evenings and at the end of holidays. We send you the Kazakh driver's name and plate the evening before; if passport control drags on, the driver waits at no extra cost.
| Same car | Border swap | |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan / minivan | $190 / $250 | $130 / $180 |
| 4x4 / Sprinter | $280 / $380 | not offered |
| Bags at the border | stay in the car | you carry them |
| Sunday evening into Kazakhstan | car may queue 1–2 h | foot terminal, usually quicker |
What is entering Kazakhstan at Korday like?
The Kyrgyz exit at Ak-Zhol is usually quick. Kazakh entry is where the time goes: officers check your passport and how many days you may stay, and bags are sometimes put through a scanner. Have your Almaty hotel address ready in case you are asked.
- Visa-free days. Many nationalities get 30 days visa-free in Kazakhstan, Indian citizens 14. If you already spent time in Kazakhstan before Kyrgyzstan, check how your days are counted: a short trip out does not always restart the allowance.
- Kyrgyz stay limit. Since 31 December 2025, US, UK, EU, Australian, Japanese and Korean citizens may stay in Kyrgyzstan 30 days within 60. Leaving late can mean a fine at Ak-Zhol, so check your entry stamp.
- Customs. Both countries are in the Eurasian Economic Union, so there is no full customs clearance, but spot checks on the Kazakh side happen. Personal quantities of honey, cheese and sweets are fine; meat products may raise questions, and medicines should stay in original packaging.
Full queue patterns are on our Korday border guide.
When are the queues into Kazakhstan shortest?
Traffic on this border is driven by Kazakh residents, not tourists. They head to Bishkek and Lake Issyk-Kul on Friday and come back on Sunday, so the direction you are travelling peaks at exactly the opposite time from the Almaty-to-Bishkek direction.
- Quietest: Tuesday to Thursday, 6:00–11:00. Twenty to forty minutes for both posts is typical.
- Busiest: Sunday from about 14:00, the last day of long weekends (early May, Nauryz in March, mid-December) and late July to mid-August, when the Issyk-Kul season ends for families. The car lane into Kazakhstan can take 1–2 hours or more on those days.
- Night: the crossing is open 24/7 and often fast after midnight, and there is no night surcharge on this route. In winter we still prefer daylight, because the Korday pass can be icy and foggy after dark.
If your dates fall on a peak, the border swap is the practical fix.
How long does the drive from Bishkek to Almaty take?
Plan on 4–5 hours of real time: about 30 minutes from central Bishkek to Ak-Zhol, the border, then around 3 hours and 220 km on the A2 to central Almaty. Because Kazakhstan runs on UTC+5 and Kyrgyzstan on UTC+6, Almaty clocks show one hour less. Leave Bishkek at 10:00, arrive in Almaty around 13:00–13:30 local time.
The slowest stretch is the end. On 20 July 2026 work began to widen the highway from four to eight lanes between km 19 and km 27 in Karasay district, near Kaskelen, on the approach to Almaty. As of October 2026, allow 20–30 extra minutes there at peak hours, and 40–60 minutes for the last 25 km into the centre on a weekday evening. If your hotel is in the upper city near Medeu or Gorny Gigant, add another 20 minutes.
Where do we stop between the border and Almaty?
- Korday, just past the checkpoint. Exchange booths: change your leftover som here or spend it in Bishkek, because som is hard to sell in Almaty.
- Korday pass, ≈40 km into Kazakhstan. Around 1,100 m; wide views back over the Chui valley on a clear morning. Winter tyres are standard from November to March.
- Uzynagash, ≈60 km before Almaty. The best break: roadside cafes with lagman and shashlik, and clean toilets at the larger fuel stations.
- Kaskelen, ≈25 km before Almaty. Big stations, then the road works zone.
Stops on request, up to one hour in total, are included. Mobile signal is good almost everywhere; Kyrgyz SIM cards roam expensively in Kazakhstan, so a local eSIM is worth setting up before you leave Bishkek.
Where can the driver drop me in Almaty?
Anywhere in the city or suburbs: hotels on Dostyk and Abay avenues, apartments in Medeu district, Almaty-2 railway station, or straight onward. Catching a flight the same day? Book Bishkek to Almaty airport instead; we time the pickup backwards from your departure with a border buffer. Landing at Manas and going straight to Kazakhstan? See Manas airport to Almaty. For the next leg, a driver for the city and the mountains is on our Almaty page.
If you are planning the Kyrgyz part of your trip, the Kyrgyz side of this route, from pickup points in Bishkek to Issyk-Kul add-ons, is covered in depth on RideKG, the Kyrgyz service of the same team.

Questions
How much is a private transfer from Bishkek to Almaty?
$190 for a sedan for up to three people, priced per car rather than per seat. A minivan for six is $250, a Land Cruiser Prado $280 and a 16-seat Sprinter $380. With a border swap at Korday it is $130 for a sedan or $180 for a minivan. You pay the driver on arrival in Almaty, in dollars, tenge, som or by card.
How long is the drive from Bishkek to Almaty?
4–5 hours of real time including the border, but because Almaty is one hour behind Bishkek, the clock shows only 3–4 hours. Weekday mornings are quickest. Sunday afternoons and the end of holidays bring the longest queues into Kazakhstan, and road works near Kaskelen can add 20–30 minutes at rush hour.
What is the difference between one car and a border swap?
$60–70 and your luggage. With one car the same driver takes you door to door and your bags stay in the trunk while you walk passport control. With the swap your driver brings you to Ak-Zhol, you carry your bags across, and a second driver meets you on the Korday side. The swap is often faster on busy Sundays.
When is the Korday border quietest when entering Kazakhstan?
6:00–11:00 on Tuesday to Thursday, when both posts usually take 20–40 minutes. The worst times are Sunday from mid-afternoon, the last day of long weekends and late July to mid-August, when Kazakh families return from Issyk-Kul. On those days the border swap avoids the car queue.
Can I go straight from Bishkek to Almaty airport?
Yes, from $200 for a sedan on our dedicated airport route. The pickup time is planned backwards from your flight with a buffer for the border, and the driver drops you at the terminal. A $20 surcharge applies between 23:00 and 06:00 on that route. For a hotel drop in the city, this page's prices apply.
What should I do with leftover Kyrgyz som?
0 som is the ideal amount to carry into Almaty, where few places exchange it at a fair rate. Spend it in Bishkek or use the exchange booths just past the Korday checkpoint. You can also pay part of the transfer in som; tell us when booking so the driver can plan change.
