Tashkent to Shymkent by private car, across the border on foot
Tashkent to Shymkent is about 120 km and 2.5–4 hours door to door including the border, from $110 per car for a sedan, with an English-speaking driver on the Kazakh side. The car does not cross: a driver on the Uzbek side collects you in Tashkent and drops you at the pedestrian gate, you walk through both posts, and a licensed Kazakh driver is waiting at the exit with your name on a sign. One fixed price covers both cars, and you get both drivers' names and plates the evening before.

How does the Tashkent to Shymkent transfer work, step by step?
- Pick-up in Tashkent at your hotel, Tashkent Central or South station, or arrivals at Tashkent airport (TAS). Your Uzbek-side driver has a name sign and your Kazakh driver's contact.
- 20–40 minutes through the south-western suburbs to the Uzbek post.
- On foot through two posts: Uzbek exit control, a short walk, then Kazakh passport control and a luggage scanner. Have the name and address of your Shymkent hotel ready; it is the question officers most often ask.
- Kazakh driver at the pedestrian exit with a name sign. He watches the queue with you on WhatsApp, so there is no pressure to hurry.
- About 1 h 40 min north on a divided highway to your hotel, Shymkent station or Shymkent airport.
To be clear: you change cars once. Uzbek-plated cars are not cleared to carry paying passengers into Kazakhstan, and anybody promising one car door to door is either taking you through the slower vehicle lane or not telling you something. Walking is usually faster.
Which crossing will I use, and is Zhibek Zholy open?
The classic crossing is Zhibek Zholy (Kazakh side) / Gisht-Kuprik (Uzbek side), the old Chernyaevka post about 15 km from central Tashkent, and it is the one we use whenever it is open. It was closed for reconstruction on 5 February 2025; Kazakh customs first named 31 July 2026 for reopening, and as of late September 2026 Uzbek officials were talking about the fourth quarter of 2026. Until it reopens, your Uzbek driver takes you to Kaplanbek – Zangiota, a modernised post about 20 km further along the same frontier, which handles pedestrians and is reported to be open around the clock. The detour costs 10–15 minutes and the price does not change. We confirm which post you will use the evening before, and our Zhibek Zholy border guide carries the live status.
On the Uzbek side the posts are known as Gisht-Kuprik and Zangiota; Tashkent taxi drivers often call the first one Chernyaevka. If you read about the crossing in a guidebook printed before 2025, assume the details have changed.
How long is the queue into Kazakhstan?
Entering Kazakhstan is usually the slower half of the crossing. On a weekday morning, plan on 30–60 minutes for both posts. Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and the days around Nauryz (21–23 March), Kurban Ait and Uzbek public holidays can stretch it to 2–3 hours, when families and traders head north. Practical points:
- Leave Tashkent by 8:00 on a weekday and you will normally be in Shymkent before lunch.
- Flying out of Shymkent? Leave Tashkent at least 5 hours before departure. Shymkent airport (CIT) is small and quick, so the margin is all for the border.
- Heat: from June to August the outdoor sections are fierce by midday. Go early and carry water.
- Night: the post is reported to work 24 hours; a Kazakh pick-up after 23:00 is fine, the Uzbek side is confirmed case by case.
What does it cost, and how do I pay?
| Car | Guests | Price per car |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Toyota Camry or similar) | up to 3 | $110 |
| Minivan (Hyundai Staria / Toyota Alphard or similar) | up to 6 | $140 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | $220 |
One price for the whole journey: the Uzbek-side car to the border, the Kazakh car on to Shymkent, fuel, tolls, parking, free waiting during the queue, water, child seats on request and up to an hour of stops. You can pay in US dollars or tenge, cash or card; we confirm the exact payment step for the two-car format when you book, so you never need som at the frontier. Free cancellation up to 24 hours. If the border is closed on the day, we rebook or refund. Full list: RideKZ prices.
Tashkent to Shymkent: private car vs train vs taxi and walk
On a budget, people take a Yandex Go to the border, walk over and squeeze into a shared taxi to Shymkent; cheap, but it means waiting for seats and negotiating in Russian or Kazakh with your luggage on the pavement. The daily Tashkent–Almaty Talgo train stops at Shymkent and does passport checks on board, comfortable if its single departure suits you. A private transfer is the option for travellers who value a fixed plan: two named drivers, one price, no haggling, and a driver who speaks English on the longer Kazakh leg.
Arriving in Kazakhstan: visas, money and SIM cards
- Visas: most EU, UK, US, Australian, Canadian, Japanese, Korean and Singaporean passports enter Kazakhstan visa-free (typically up to 30 days) as of October 2026; India, China and some Gulf passports have their own rules. Check before you travel.
- Exit from Uzbekistan: keep your hotel registration slips; they are rarely asked for, but occasionally are.
- Money: spend your som in Tashkent; very few places in Shymkent buy it and border rates are poor. Shymkent has plenty of ATMs and exchange offices, and cards work widely.
- SIM: Kazakh operators (Beeline, Kcell, Tele2/Altel) sell SIMs with a passport at the airport and city shops; your driver can stop at one.
- Cash limit: amounts over USD 10,000 equivalent must be declared on both sides.

Questions
How much is a private transfer from Tashkent to Shymkent?
$110 for a sedan for up to 3 people, $140 for a minivan for up to 6 and $220 for a 16-seat Sprinter, per car. That includes the Uzbek-side car to the border, the Kazakh car to your address in Shymkent, fuel, tolls and free waiting while you queue at passport control.
How long does it take to get from Tashkent to Shymkent?
2.5–4 hours door to door: 20–40 minutes to the border, 30–60 minutes on foot through both posts on a weekday, and about 1 h 40 min to Shymkent. The queue into Kazakhstan is usually longer than the one out, and Friday and Sunday evenings can add 2–3 hours.
Can one car take me from Tashkent to Shymkent?
No, and we would rather say so. You walk through the border and change cars once. Your Uzbek-side driver drops you at the pedestrian gate and your Kazakh driver waits at the exit with a name sign. Vehicles queue in a separate, slower lane, so walking is normally quicker.
Which border crossing is used between Tashkent and Shymkent?
2 options: Gisht-Kuprik / Zhibek Zholy, about 15 km from Tashkent, closed for reconstruction since February 2025 with reopening expected in Q4 2026; and Zangiota / Kaplanbek, about 20 km from Tashkent, which we use meanwhile. The price is the same either way.
Do I need a visa for Kazakhstan coming from Uzbekistan?
0 visas for most EU, UK, US, Australian, Japanese, Korean and Singaporean passports, which enter visa-free, usually for up to 30 days, as of October 2026. Indian, Chinese and some Gulf nationals have different rules, so check your passport. Have your Shymkent hotel address ready for the officer.
Can you pick me up at Tashkent airport and drive me to Shymkent?
Yes, at the same price as a Tashkent hotel pick-up. Your Uzbek-side driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight and waits 90 minutes after landing. Late arrivals are fine; crossings after 23:00 are confirmed individually when you book.
