Almaty to Tashkent by private car: the Silk Road in one long day

Almaty to Tashkent by road is about 800 km and roughly 11 hours including stops and the border, from $420 per car for a sedan with an English-speaking driver. We will be straight with you: the flight takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, so this transfer is not for people in a hurry. It is for travellers who want to see the steppe, the Kordai pass and the old Silk Road cities of Taraz and Shymkent from a comfortable car, stopping where they like, or who are carrying too much luggage or too many people to enjoy airports. The car does not cross into Uzbekistan: you walk over the border near Tashkent and a second driver takes you the last stretch, all in the same price.

Should I drive or fly from Almaty to Tashkent?

If you simply need to be in Tashkent, fly. Direct flights take about 1 h 40 min, several airlines (Air Astana, Centrum Air, Qanot Sharq among them) run several flights a day, and with airport time the whole thing is 4–5 hours door to door. The Talgo train is the romantic middle option: it runs overnight, does border checks on board and, as of the last published timetable, takes around 15 hours.

The road makes sense when the journey is part of the trip:

What is the route, and where do you stop?

The whole drive stays inside Kazakhstan until the Uzbek border, so no Kyrgyz visa or extra crossing is needed. It follows the A2, part of the Western Europe–Western China corridor, mostly a divided four-lane highway with a few two-lane and roadworks sections.

StopFrom AlmatyWhy stop
Kordai pass≈230 kmBroad views over the Shu valley and the Kyrgyz Alatau; the road climbs to a little over 1,000 m
Merke area≈380 kmRoadside cafes with laghman and shashlik, clean toilets at the bigger fuel stations
Aisha Bibi mausoleum≈480 km11th–12th century tomb in carved terracotta, 15–20 minutes from the highway near Taraz
Taraz≈500 kmLunch in town, the old Talas citadel area
Mashat canyon≈650 kmRed cliffs beside the road, a five-minute photo stop
Shymkent≈690 kmCoffee, fuel, or your overnight
Uzbek border≈780 kmWalk across, change cars

Distances are approximate and depend on your pick-up point. Up to an hour of stops is included; longer sightseeing is easiest as an overnight.

How long does the drive take, realistically?

Plan on 11 hours from an Almaty hotel to a Tashkent hotel with a sensible lunch and the usual border time: about 9 hours of driving, an hour of stops and 30–60 minutes on foot through both posts. Leaving Almaty at 6:00 puts you in Tashkent around dinner. What stretches it: winter fog and ice on the Kordai pass and in the valleys before Taraz (November to March), roadworks, a Friday or Sunday queue at the border, and police speed checks, which are frequent on the long straight sections. Drivers stick to the limits, and we would rather you arrive late than tired. Mobile signal is good along most of the route, with a few weak patches on the pass and in open steppe.

How does the border work on this route?

The car does not cross. About 100 km past Shymkent your Kazakh driver drops you at the pedestrian gate and helps with the bags; you walk through Kazakh exit and Uzbek entry control, and a second driver meets you at the exit with a name sign for the last 20–40 minutes into Tashkent. Both drivers' names and plate numbers arrive on WhatsApp the evening before, and waiting during the queue is free.

The classic crossing is Zhibek Zholy (Kazakh side) / Gisht-Kuprik (Uzbek side), the old Chernyaevka post about 15 km from central Tashkent, and it is the one we use whenever it is open. It was closed for reconstruction on 5 February 2025; Kazakh customs first named 31 July 2026 for reopening, and as of late September 2026 Uzbek officials were talking about the fourth quarter of 2026. Until it reopens, your driver takes you to Kaplanbek – Zangiota, a modernised post about 20 km further along the same frontier, which handles pedestrians and is reported to be open around the clock. The detour costs 10–15 minutes and the price does not change. We confirm which post you will use the evening before, and our Zhibek Zholy border guide carries the live status.

Arriving after dark is common on a one-day trip; the post is reported to work 24 hours, and we confirm the late Uzbek pick-up when you book.

Should I split the trip with a night in Shymkent or Turkestan?

For most travellers we suggest it. Eleven hours is a full day even in a good car, and the border is far more pleasant at 9:00 than at 19:00. Two good ways to split:

If you want it all arranged as one booking, the 3-day Silk Road by car covers Shymkent, Turkestan, Otrar and the drop in Tashkent. For a split version of this transfer, tell us your dates and we send a fixed quote within 15 minutes; your driver's lodging and meals are on us.
