Arystan-Bab: why pilgrims go here before Yasawi

Arystan-Bab was the teacher of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, and local tradition holds that a pilgrimage to Turkestan should begin at his grave. Legend says he carried a date stone (amanat) from the Prophet Muhammad and passed it to the young Yasawi. The mausoleum stands near the village of Kogam in Otrar district, about 60–70 km south-west of Turkestan. The present building, with its twin minarets and carved wooden columns, dates mostly from 1909 and later restorations; the original 12th–14th-century structure was rebuilt several times after floods from the Syr Darya. Inside are a mosque and the tomb; there is a small fee or donation and the same modest dress applies as at Yasawi (shoulders, knees and women's hair covered). Expect 30–45 minutes, longer on Fridays when families come to pray. There is a well with water pilgrims take home, clean toilets and a cafe at the car park.

What is left of Otrar?

Otrar (Otyrar-tobe), a few kilometres from Arystan-Bab, was one of the great Silk Road cities. In 1218 its governor killed the merchants of a Mongol caravan; Genghis Khan's armies besieged and destroyed the city in 1219–1220, which opened the Mongol invasion of Central Asia. Otrar recovered, and Timur died here in 1405 while marching on China. It was also the birthplace of the philosopher al-Farabi.

Today it is a large clay mound with excavated streets, house foundations, a bathhouse, kilns and the outlines of a mosque, and pottery shards are everywhere underfoot (look, don't take). There is little shade and almost no signage in English, which is where a guide pays off. The Otrar museum-reserve's exhibition in Shauldir holds finds from the site and is worth 30–45 minutes; check opening times before you go, as its hours and tickets have changed with renovations. Allow 1–1.5 hours on the mound itself.

Is Sauran worth adding?

Yes, if you like ruins and light. Sauran, about 43 km north-west of Turkestan just off the Kyzylorda highway, is the best-preserved medieval walled city in southern Kazakhstan: a ring of mud-brick walls up to several metres high around a city that in the 10th century was described as having seven walls. Sauran supplied brick and tile for the Yasawi mausoleum in 1389, and travellers in the 1500s described its underground karez water channels. It is open land, free to walk, with no facilities beyond the car park, so bring water and a hat. Late afternoon light on the walls is excellent; plan it as the last stop and you are back in Turkestan for dinner.

Sample day: Turkestan, Arystan-Bab, Otrar and Sauran

  1. 8:00 pick-up at your Turkestan hotel or Karavan Saray. Early starts matter from May to September.
  2. 9:15 Arystan-Bab mausoleum (about 70 km, 1 h 15 min).
  3. 10:15 Otrar museum exhibition in Shauldir, then the Otyrar-tobe mound before the heat.
  4. 12:30 lunch: plov or shashlik at a roadside cafe in Shauldir; your driver knows which kitchens are clean.
  5. 14:00 drive back towards Turkestan (about 1 h 15 min); rest at the hotel through the hottest hours if it is summer.
  6. 16:30 Sauran (43 km, 40 minutes each way) for golden-hour photographs.
  7. 19:00 back in Turkestan, in time for the evening show at Karavan Saray and the floodlit Yasawi mausoleum.

Short version: skip Sauran and you are done in about 6 hours. If you have not yet seen the Yasawi mausoleum (since June 2026, 5,000 KZT for foreigners from outside the CIS), do it on the morning of another day, or ask us to fit it in before Sauran.

Do I need a 4x4, and what about the heat?

No 4x4 is needed: the whole loop is on asphalt, with short gravel stretches at the Otrar mound and Sauran car parks that any sedan handles. The 4x4 is for comfort or for families who want the higher seats. Heat is the real issue: in July and August the sites reach 40 °C with no shade, so the sample day above front-loads the outdoor parts. In spring the steppe is green and, in some years, carpeted with poppies and tulips in April. Mobile signal is good near villages and patchy on the open mounds.

Combining it with Shymkent, airports and a longer route

Most travellers arrive in Turkestan by road from Shymkent (Shymkent to Turkestan, about 2 hours) or by air (Turkestan airport transfer, with flights from Almaty, Astana and Istanbul). If you are flying into Shymkent, the Shymkent airport transfer page lists the international routes. For a slower pace with nights in both cities, see the 3-day Silk Road tour. Book on WhatsApp +996 777 889 992; we reply in about 15 minutes, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Questions

How far is Otrar from Turkestan?

About 60–70 km south-west, roughly 1 h 15 min by car on asphalt; Arystan-Bab and the Otrar mound are a few kilometres apart. Sauran is a separate 43 km in the other direction, which is why the full loop with all three sites is about 230 km.

How much is a private tour to Otrar and Arystan-Bab?

From $170 per car with RideKZ for a sedan for up to 3, $210 for a minivan for 6 and $340 for a 16-seat Sprinter, with an English-speaking driver all day. Site tickets and meals are extra; a local guide costs from $100 per day.

Why visit Arystan-Bab before the Yasawi mausoleum?

1 tradition explains it: Arystan-Bab was Yasawi's teacher, and pilgrims are expected to honour the teacher first. Legend says he passed Yasawi a date stone entrusted to him by the Prophet. Dress as for any mosque and allow 30–45 minutes.

Is Otrar worth visiting?

Yes, if you care about history: the city Genghis Khan destroyed in 1219–1220 and where Timur died in 1405 is now an open archaeological mound with excavated streets and pottery underfoot. There is little shade or English signage, so go early and consider a guide.

Can I visit Sauran on the same day?

Yes. Sauran is 43 km north-west of Turkestan, about 40 minutes each way, and fits as the last stop for late-afternoon light. Its mud-brick walls are free to walk, with no facilities, so bring water and a hat.

Can I do the Otrar day trip from Shymkent?

Yes, but it is about 390 km and 10–11 hours with visits, so most travellers sleep in Turkestan first. Message us on WhatsApp for a from-Shymkent quote, or take the 3-day Silk Road tour with nights in both cities.
