What does the Torysh and Sherkala day trip cost and include?

$330 per car, for one late-model Toyota Land Cruiser and one licensed driver who speaks English, for the whole day. With four guests that is about $83 each. Included: pick-up and drop-off at your Aktau hotel (or at the airport if you land early), fuel, bottled water, a cool box for your picnic, and stops wherever you want them. Not included: lunch and any donation at Shakpak-Ata. A local guide who can explain the geology and the Sufi history joins from $100 per day.

You reserve with a 30% deposit online by Visa or Mastercard and pay the balance to your driver at the end, by card or in cash (USD or KZT). Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up; if heavy rain makes the clay tracks unsafe, we move the date at no cost.

What is the route, stop by stop?

The usual loop runs clockwise, coast first and steppe in the afternoon light:

  1. Aktau → Zhygylgan, ≈110 km, 2 h. North along the Caspian, the second half on dirt. Zhygylgan, 'the fallen land', is a slab of limestone up to 50 m thick and roughly 2 × 4 km that collapsed into a void below. Descend from the south-eastern edge to find fossil footprints of ancient animals on the blocks; trainers with grip are enough. Allow 1–1.5 h.
  2. Zhygylgan → Shakpak-Ata, ≈45 km east. A small underground mosque cut into the wall of a canyon around the 10th century, with a cross-shaped plan, carved columns and a cemetery of carved stones below. Ten minutes' climb on steps. Women cover their heads.
  3. Shakpak-Ata → Torysh, ≈50 km. Picnic lunch on the way. Torysh is the 'valley of balls': hundreds of round sandstone concretions scattered across the steppe, from the size of a football to about 4 m across, some split open like eggs.
  4. Valley of Castles (Airakty) and Sherkala. Airakty's chalk walls look carved by hand; Taras Shevchenko sketched them in 1851. Ten kilometres west, Sherkala rises 322 m out of the plain, a yurt from one side and a crouching lion from another. The ruins of Kyzylkala, a 12th-century caravan town, are about 4 km away.
  5. Sherkala → Shetpe → Aktau, ≈170 km, 2.5 h on paved road, back by about 18:30.

If the coastal track to Zhygylgan is wet, your driver reverses the loop or replaces it with Sultan-Epe; tell him at pick-up if you have a fixed dinner or flight.

Do you need a 4x4 for Torysh and Sherkala?

For this loop, yes. Sherkala itself sits about 18 km from Shetpe and can be reached in a crossover in dry weather, but the coastal track to Zhygylgan, the approach to Shakpak-Ata and the network of tracks across Torysh are unsigned dirt and takyr clay, which turns to grease after rain. A Land Cruiser keeps the day on schedule and lets the driver take the short track instead of the long way round. There is also no mobile signal for much of the afternoon, and no fuel between Aktau and Shetpe, so the driver leaves with a full tank and recovery kit.

When is the best light, and how hot does it get?

April to early June and September to October are the comfortable months: 18–28 °C, clear air, and in May a faint green on the steppe. In July and August midday reaches +40 °C with no shade at any stop; we start at 6:00, do Zhygylgan before 10:00 and keep the walks short. Photographers should be at Torysh or Sherkala in the last two hours before sunset, when the stone balls throw long shadows and Sherkala turns orange; ask your driver to reverse the loop to finish there. Winter days are short and windy, and the trip is possible only after a dry spell.

What to bring, and what about food and toilets?

Are there park fees or permits on this route?

As of October 2026 there is no ticket for Torysh, Sherkala, Airakty, Zhygylgan or Shakpak-Ata; you only pay a voluntary donation at the mosque. That is different from the south-east of the region: since 1 September 2026, Bozzhyra, Tuzbair and Kyzylkup charge per-person and per-car fees. Rules in Mangystau are changing quickly as visitor numbers grow, so check before you go; your driver will tell you if anything new appears at a site.

How does this compare with Bozzhyra or the 3-day tour?

This trip covers the north of the peninsula and is the easiest way to see Mangystau if you have only one day. Bozzhyra and Beket-Ata are in the opposite direction, about 300 km south-east on the Ustyurt plateau; the Bozzhyra day trip costs $420 per Land Cruiser and means 12–14 hours on the road. With three days, the Mangystau 3-day Land Cruiser tour combines both halves with a night in a yurt camp at Bozzhyra. Flying in on the day? Your driver can meet you at the terminal, or book a separate Aktau airport transfer. More on the region in the Aktau hub.

Questions

How much is a Torysh and Sherkala tour from Aktau?

$330 for the whole Toyota Land Cruiser for the day, up to 4 guests, so about $83–110 per person. The price includes the English-speaking driver, fuel for the roughly 400 km loop, water and hotel pick-up. Lunch and a donation at Shakpak-Ata are extra. A 30% deposit by Visa or Mastercard books the date.

How far is Sherkala from Aktau?

About 170 km by road, roughly 2.5 hours via the A-33 and Shetpe, which is 18 km from the mountain. Torysh and the Valley of Castles are close by. Adding Zhygylgan and Shakpak-Ata on the coast turns it into a loop of around 400 km and 10–11 hours.

What is the Torysh valley of balls?

A stretch of steppe near Sherkala scattered with hundreds of round sandstone concretions, from football size to about 4 m in diameter, formed underground millions of years ago and exposed by erosion. Some have split open. It is free to visit and best photographed in the two hours before sunset.

Can I see Torysh and Bozzhyra in one day?

Not sensibly. Torysh is about 170 km north-east of Aktau and Bozzhyra about 300 km south-east, in opposite directions. Doing both would mean 16+ hours of driving. Take this day trip plus the Bozzhyra trip, or the 3-day Mangystau tour that sleeps near Bozzhyra.

Is there an entry fee for Torysh or Sherkala?

No, as of October 2026 there is no ticket at Torysh, Sherkala, the Valley of Castles, Zhygylgan or Shakpak-Ata, only a customary donation at the mosque. The new fees introduced on 1 September 2026 apply to Bozzhyra, Tuzbair, Kyzylkup and Bokty. Check again before travelling, as rules change.

Is this trip suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes, with care. The walks are short: 10 minutes up to Shakpak-Ata and an optional 30–60 minute scramble at Zhygylgan, which can be skipped. The Land Cruiser is comfortable on dirt, child seats are free on request, and the driver stops whenever you ask. Avoid July and August with small children.
